The Most Unromantic Romance: A FF (Continued)
Part 3:
Khushi was entering her house on a tip-toe because she knew Mother India, Krithika would be in a catty mood. She had asked her to clean up her room as Payal was coming to stay with them. Payal was her father's business associate's daughter. She would be doing a course in fashion designing at her university.
Mother India had given the ultimatum that she would be sharing her room with Payal. Khushi did not understand the need for this at all because they had a guest room where they could comfortably accommodate her. She thought must be one of mom's favorite schemes at her reformation into the 'Bharatiya nari'.
Her mom never tired praising this Payal for all her sankari qualities. "Payal this----Payal that------Payal has long and beautiful hair--------------Payal is an excellent cook----------Payal is very modest and soft-spoken----------Payal is learning Bharatanatyam --------- Payal sings bhajan beautifully". It had come to the extent that Khushi thought her mother would praise this Payal for even taking breath by saying, "How beautifully Payal takes breath!"
When would Indian parents learn it would do nobody good to compare one's child with their neighbor's or friend's? She too had done her bit in being a dutiful daughter in her own way. Even now, she had secured the first rank in the entrance test of Excellence Professional University for her course in MBA. Khushi sighed. At least she was happy that her father, Rohit was not like that. As far as her mother was concerned, cotton plugs hai na.
She knew that her mother belonged to an older generation and had pretty old-fashioned views. But again why was she being so paranoid in her case. She too had had her bit of fun in her younger days and even managed to run away with her father against the wishes of her parents who were getting her married to someone else. Khushi knew she would never even dream of doing such a thing against her parents's wishes.
That morning her father was trying to convince her mother saying, "You know Khushi hates sharing her room with anybody. Why are you forcing her? Payal will also have greater privacy in the guest room." Her mom argued, "Ji, you're not understanding my problem. There is a very big scheme behind it." Rohit muttering under his breath, "Why wouldn't I? After all I ran away with you. I can read you like an open book. You're trying to reform Khushi to the old-fashioned Indian mould by this crazy scheme of yours. But if my fears come true, I'll get to see a transformation of Payal into Khushi and not Khushi into Payal."
After the above said argument at house, Khushi had scooted off in a huff. It was only when she had butterflies in her stomach sharp at twelve in the afternoon that her thoughts turned towards home, sweet home. If she managed to get to her room safely without Mother India seeing her, she could perhaps ask her dad's help in getting her lunch to her room. She did not want another confrontation with her mother because she knew she had another lecture awaiting her if she encountered her mom.
"Hawa-hawai kahan jaa rahi ho. Main ne kaha tah apna room saaf karo kyunki Payal arahi hai. Aur tum subah seh gayab. Jab patha hai ki tum nahin sudhrogi aur woh kam bhi mujhe hi karna padega, toh tumhari room gayi thi. Par mujhe tumhare room nahin garbage dump dikhi!" Krithika venting her frustration on the disorganized state of her daughter's room.
"Mother India toda consider karlo Mother Kali roop lene seh pehle. Room itna saaf hai toh room nahin, hotel ka karma lagega!" Khushi quipped.
"Aur kya kya lagega tujhe tumhare kaan keechne seh pehle!" Mother India catching hold of her ears when the Khushi nautanki started.
"Bhagwan main aisa kyon hoon. Meri Mother India mujhse Khush nahin toh mera nam khushi rakkhar kya faida? Aaj seh, matlab, abhi seh mera nam DUKHI DUKHI DUKHI!"
"Chal dramebaaz kahin ki! Fresh hokar aajao! Lunch lagadungi" Mother India to some extent pacified. Payal reached Bajaj House late in the evening. The silence between Khushi and Payal was strained. Their conversation did not proceed beyond the dry and formal "Hi" "Hi". To make matters worse, Payal had brought her poodle, Lakshmi along with her. Mother India was effusively remarking "How lovely!" when Khushi was complaining in her heart, "How disgusting!" Even the next day, Payal, well-informed about Khushi's driving had refused to go to the University in her bike. She said, "Mujhe bikes seh dar lagtha hai, Aunty. Main taxi ya auto seh chali jaaoungi."
It was her first day at the University. She parked her bike and started walking towards the gate. Khushi had so many dreams about it. She was a little flustered though she always made a show of bravery outside. Suddenly someone tapped on her shoulder. She turned back and saw the accident-wala guy standing in front of her.
Arnav held a rose in front of her and said, "I LOVE YOU. I have felt that ever since I met you the first time. It was the most memorable day of my life. I cannot live without you. If you don't accept my love I will jump from the fifth floor of that building" and started walking towards the said structure. Khushi's jaws dropped and she was in a state of perfect shock before she muttered, "What the-----"
