Chapter 29:

"Someone hit me," Emily said groaning loudly when she walked into the archive room along with Maan with Satya. She groaned louder when both the men smacked her.

"Why did I volunteer for this?" She whined.

"Because this job has to be done by someone I trust the most," Maan said smiling charmingly at her. She rolled her eyes.

"You know Maan, you should get that smile of yours patented. It's quite effective," she said shrugging off her blazer. Maan chuckled.

"You need anything else Emily?" Satya asked.

"Can I get your clone? So that he and I can actually get the balance sheets of last six years checked in record time?" Emily asked faking eagerness. Satya swallowed his laughter while Maan didn't bother.

"I will check if the cloning machine is free," Satya replied and waved his hands.

"With Emily looking at balance sheets, we are little shorthanded," Satya said closing Emily's cabin door behind him.

"What happened to our friends who helped us back then?" Maan asked about the mercenaries who had helped Maan to bring down Khurana Capital shares. It was ironic how the people who exposed the company's vulnerabilities were now trying their hardest to fix it.

"They are still underground." Satya answered. "What are you thinking?" He asked looking at Maan's thoughtful expression.

"I was wondering if we can render their services again. What do you think?"

"Vikram's dog isn't sniffing anymore and Vikram will steer out of your way for a while. They can come out now," Satya said.

"Hire them as consultants Satya," Maan said. Satya looked at him in surprise. "They are smart people and quite loyal to you. Fix them up with some consultancy or ask them to create one for themselves, I don't care. But they have to be here in two days," Maan said.

The thinly veiled order wasn't missed by Satya. He only smiled at his boss's order.

"They will be sir," he replied.

"Deshmukh is here," Satya came in to Maan's cabin, his eyes betraying the surprise.

"What does he want?" Maan asked.

"I have no idea. He wants to talk to you for thirty minutes," replied Satya.

"Where is he right now?"

"In conference room. I don't think it's wise for him to come to your cabin here," Satya said.

"You are right. Let's see what he wants." Maan said grabbing his jacket. "I wonder why he was very specific about thirty minutes thought," Maan said falling in step with Satya as they walked towards conference room.

"He knows what he wants. And I guess he also knows what we want. He might have a proposition for us," Satya speculated.

"Quite possibly. But I am surprised that he came all the way till here. I made a number of trips to his office for a semi-decent contract and he simply walks in here after knowing that we are his vendors?" Maan asked.

"Sir, whatever the case might be, stay alert. That man is here with a bigger agenda, by the looks of it. Should I be present in the meeting?" Satya asked.

"No. I am going to ask him for a one on one meeting; no scribes or MOM for this one. Let's keep it under the hood for the time being." Maan said urgently.

"You think he is sniffing on this company?" Satya asked looking at Maan surprised.

"It's not something that's impossible now, is it? Khurana Capital is practically dirt cheap asset. Anyone with decent pocket money can buy it," Maan said dully. They were standing in front of the conference room.

"What do you want me to do?" Satya asked.

"Stay here. When I need you I will call you," Maan said and walked into the conference room.

"It's been a while," Dileep Khurana said quietly.

"What the f**k are you doing Dileep," Maya whispered harshly. "You sacrificed Pratap and now you are sacrificing Maan too?"

"Maya…" Dileep looked shocked at her accusation. "Maan is the only person who is capable of pulling it off," Dileep replied.

"Khurana Capital is beyond repair now Dileep. All of us know that."

"We have to do everything in our power to fix it before filing for bankruptcy Maya, you know that."

"Why not pull in company's cash reserve?" Maya fired back. Dileep didn't respond.

"There is a problem with that," Dileep answered swallowing hard. He knew how ruthless Maya could get. She stared at him. "Vikram has pulled in that money last time losses cover-up was done," Dileep added.

"But I never received any notice stating that." Maya asked, confused. Geet was one of the largest shareholders and Maya was a non-voting member of the Khurana Capital. She was just a dummy and she knew it and she wouldn't have it any other way – she wasn't responsible for any decision making process yet she knew everything that went on in the company.

"Board wasn't consulted on this matter," Dileep replied. Dileep realized that it was better if he told the truth instead of giving some hogwash of an answer. Because if she came to know truth from Maan and realized that she was lied to, she would ensure that every television news channel, business houses would come to know about Vikram's idiocy in a matter of minutes. If he told her everything now, he could buy sometime to fix the mess.

"Vikram embezzled from Khurana Capital and he is still out in open?" Maya flared. "He should be arrested for this fraud."

"Maya…"

"Did you at least investigate what happened to the big chunk at least?"

"Most of it was back in the company on the balance sheets and the rest is unaccounted for," Dileep replied.

"I am not surprised that you are hiding the fact because you are slimy like that. I am however unable to understand why Maan isn't doing anything about it," Maya said.

"If Vikram is reported at this moment, there will be freeze on many of the assets that have been compromised. And also those assets would be frozen which the investigation team would believe to be involved in the scam. Maan would have to also deal with this investigation along with cleaning Khurana Capital and finding enough investments on time," Dileep replied.

Maya nodded and didn't speak for a long time. She understood Maan's position and knew that the decision was well made.

"History is repeating itself in a way you know. Pratap opened dozens of paper companies channeling your slush fund and illegal assets into legal workflow so that Dileep Khurana could be saved from filing for bankruptcy. Vikram and Maan are standing on the threshold of that same story," Maya said sighing deeply.

"I have a strong feeling that Maan is going to somehow make it," Dileep said.

"I don't think so. He isn't as seasoned as Vikram or Mitalee Dileep. He will try to fix the root of the problem itself which is the ideal case and never works in reality," Maya said, a hint of pride for her Godson.

"That's why I chose him." Dileep knew that if he asked Mitalee to take care of Khurana Capital, she would somehow manage to get investment in time and make it work. But she would never care to first figure out the reason why there was a problem in the first place.

Vikram wasn't the only problem here. The way they operated was the biggest problem. Dileep knew that if Maan was brought on boat then the first thing he would do is bring in his own team and take up all the decision making responsibility on his own. And that's what he wanted in the first place – housekeeping.

"I knew you were a lousy husband but I hadn't pegged you for a bas***d of a father," she didn't hold back on venom factor.

"That's not fair Maya," Dileep said, his voice low.

"Pratap was too weak to handle the scandal that was coming his way; the scandal and an inquiry that you threatened him with," Maya yelled the last part. Dileep shrunk in his seat.

"What scandal are you talking about?" A voice came from the doorway.

Maan stood there looking dangerously angry.
