Aamir Khan stands his ground on his support for the Narmada Bachao Andolan

The normally media-shy and reclusive Aamir Khan was in the mood to clear the air. He called for a press conference to speak about the ongoing controversies surrounding the release of his latest film Fanaa. The actor appeared to be in a relaxed mood and answered all the queries with ease.
The release of Fanaa has been opposed in Gujarat becasue of the actor's support of the Narmada Bachao Andolan. "I don't understand this controversy, but I've always got support from my audience," said Aamir. "Everywhere I go, people approach me and tell me that they support me. As far as audiences in Gujarat are concerned, they will definitely find a way to watch Fanaa."
At the same time, Aamir clearly denied these controversies to be mere publicity stunts. "This is not a publicity stunt. Why would we do something which would disturb us? Fanaa is not a controversial film – it's an entertaining movie, a love story. I never speak to the media and whatever publicity is being done is courtesy Yash Raj Films."
Although, the box-office collections in Gujarat are bound to suffer, Aamir says, "The losses of the film are very less compared to the losses those poor people are facing. So many poor farmers have lost their land, and this is a democratic country. What kind of democracy is this? What kind of politics are these?"
Aamir doesn't believe that the industry has not supported him. "Why don't you go and ask them? I'm sure they all will speak. I know that every producer, every actor and every cameraman connected with the film industry are there to support me. I don't think I'm alone here. I am speaking to you alone today as I haven't called any one else. I'm sure if you call anyone, they will support me."
Again, Aamir refuses to apologise. "I have done nothing wrong. I will not apologise," he says. "I have left everything to the audience. They are the best judge to decide what's right and what's wrong?" Aamir emphatically said this controversy would not hold him back from participating in other issues. "This will not make me stop myself from raising other issues. I know that a celebrity definitely helps in creating awareness and in future too I will do whatever I can in my capability."
Regarding the Yashraj demand of an extra per cent from the multiplex owners, Aamir said, "I personally believe that the multiplexes definitely charge higher rates. Whatever be the issue between exhibitors and distributors, a certain system should be worked out which can satisfy everyone in the trade. There is definitely no arm twisting from Yash-Raj films and its business. However, as an actor, I wouldn't like to see the ticket rates hiked and the audience suffer."
