26. The Encounter
Thoughts of Geet filled his mind as he was back in his cabin after the meeting with Mr. Om. Geet was on compulsory leave, sanctioned by Daadi and would be for the whole week. It was amazing how Daadi changed her colors. Wasn't she the one who insisted that he should make Geet his secretary? Now, the same Daadi refused to send Geet to the office, something that could become a permanent arrangement if she has her way. He wondered how would he manage when having Geet around, had become a habit for him. He missed her coffee too. He looked at the untouched cup on his table. He had kept the blinds down so that he would not be distracted on missing her expressive face, whenever he looked towards her cabin. No, he would give in to Daadi's demand just for this week, that too because Geet needed some time to regain herself. When she came back it would be as Mrs. Geet Maan Khurana, he smiled in satisfaction. The announcement of their marriage would be made on the party on Saturday. There was a few things he had to settle before that, but first...he picked up the phone.
"Hello..." the voice at the other end ws hesitant. The urge to listen to her voice had made him make the impulsive call, but now he didn't have a valid reason to give. But of course...
"Have you taken your medicine?"
"Yes Maan."
"How was your yoga class?"
"Nothing much today, just some breathing and flexibility exercises. She wants me to take it slow for a few days."
"So, what are you doing now?"
"Reading a novel." Geet looked at the time and asked, "Is the meeting with Mr. Om over?"
"Yes, he is happy with the latest plan." There was a pause and he wondered if she would believe him when he told her he missed her in the office. So he asked...
"What is my Sona doing?"
"Shonu is keeping quiet because his papa calls him by girl's name!" came the rejoinder.
"Ha! I'm sure my poor darling is upset because her mother keeps addressing her as a boy!"
"I'm the mother, na? So I should know."
"The same argument!" he teased.
This was an argument that they were having since he came back. It had begun as an attempt to distract Geet and it always revived her.
"Maan..." there was that hesitation in her voice again. "It is a bit boring with nothing to do. If there is anything that needs to be done without urgency at the office can you send it?"
" And let Daadi get have her go at me! No way. But are you missing work so much?"
" Haan..."
"More than me?"
"No, but..."
"Good! I miss you too..." Maan said with a chuckle. "And I can just imagine you blushing."
Geet was perplexed by this new playful and teasing Maan. She didn't know how to respond. Maan took pity on her and said, "I thought about you and it was interrupting my work." Then continued in a stern voice, "Now don't call me. I've got work to do. Bye Geet."
"Bye." Geet whispered to the now silent phone and wondered who had called whom.
Maan was still grinning, imagining Geet's confusion as he put down the phone to open his laptop. A knock on the door turned the grin to smile and he found it was Mrs. A.
"There is a man who is very insistent that he must meet you MK. One Mr. Brij Handa but he doesn't hae an appointment."
"Brij, here?" Maan wondered. He was planning to seek the help of investigators to find Brij and tackle him. Now Geet's babaji saved him the effort, Maan thought with anticipation.
"Send him in. Let the security check him thoroughly first but let him in even if he is carrying a weapon. I just need to know."
Maan then called someone and after the pleasantries said, "Arjun can you be here in say 20 minutes. When you reach the office give me a missed call, I need your help for something. I'll let you in on the rest once you reach."
Maan kept his eyes on the laptop, refusing the person who entered his cabin the common courtesy of acknowledgement. 2 minutes was enough to rankle him and Maan could feel the impatience and anger radiating from him. he looked up then and asked,
"Yes?" his face reflecting that he was too busy to talk.
"Ji, Mr. Khurana, I'm Brij Handa, Geet's uncle." He extended his hand.
Maan ignored it as he studied Brij and felt the temper escalating another notch. The hand that was withdrawn formed a fist. Good! Maan thought he is so easy to rile. Maan nodded towards the visitor's chair and asked, " What can I do for you?"
"It's not what you can do for me, but what I'm willing to give you that I have come to discuss." Brij said with great flourish.
"Really? Why are you under the assumption that you can give me anything? What is it that you are offering that I don't already have?" the tone and the mocking glance send the message loud and clear... 'You are so below me! I'm doing you a big favour by just letting you in my presence'
Maan watched Brij, amused by the way he fought to keep his temper under control.
"So Mr. Handa, let's hear it then. What are you offering, no willing to give?"
"The Khurana heir!" the confidence and flourish with which it was said was meant to impress.
Maan burst out laughing. "Sorry!" he said yet his demeanor shouted that he was not. "Tell me how is my heir something you can give me?" Maan gave Brij a once over as he continued, "I prefer my normal urges."
Brij's face literally turned red and Maan could hear his teeth gnashing. He stood up threateningly, "You!"
"Calm down Mr. Handa. No one raises his voice in my cabin but me. So if you have to discuss something remember that or be ready to be thrown out of this office by the security. Here have a glass of water." Maan pushed the glass forward. "But I'm sorry I still don't understand you." Maan looked at Brij calmly, expectantly.
Perplexed by Maan's sudden change of attitude after the insult, Brij sat back.
"May be I didn't convey it properly. See Mr.Khurana, I know Geet is carrying your brother's child. You can't imagine the shame it will have on my family name. Brij Handa's niece, an unmarried mother!" he shook his head in shame, slowly warming up to the act of a concerned, desperate uncle. "The whole village will laugh in my face. But she is still my niece, my flesh and blood, how can I abandon her?" he looked at Maan for understanding who just signaled with his head to continue.
"Moreover I had already arranged a perfect match for her. A very affluent man I know. Now I can't take Geet to him with this baby and I will have to make some excuse to the groom. But you see I had borrowed some money in anticipation of marriage and now I will have to repay that." He expected Maan to offer his aid but when he didn't, continued with his monologue. "I am willing to leave my niece with you until the baby is born but you will have to compensate me for my loss. You have to understand I am to suffer because this baby."
" Mr. Handa, I can understand your situation." Brij smiled content and mentally calculated the amount he will have to ask. He will add a few Lakhs more for the insult he had to suffer after reaching the office. "But tell me why should I pay you for my wife being pregnant?"
"Your wife!" after the initial shock he adjusted his features to show his confidence at catching Maan's lie. "Come on Mr. Khurana I am an intelligent man, I can understand desperation when I see it. I thought I will deal the matter with the man of the family. Do you think I believed the story your old woman cooked up about Geet being your wife?"
Maan's eyes blazed, but his voiced remained level with a touch of menace in it, "You will speak of my grandmother with respect. And Geet is my wife. I shudn't matter to me what you believe but I hate it that you should in the misconception that you have even the remotest claim on my Geet now."
Maan opened his table's drawer and pulled out a file. He pushed it across the table towards Brij. "You will find all the documents are valid."
Perplexed Brij took the file in his hands and browsed thru it. His face reflecting first the disbelief and then anger at being thwarted. The file contained a copy of the marriage certificate of Mr. Maan singh Khurana and Miss. Geet Handa, dated a few week back.
