Rekha reprises Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar
Her role in Yatra has her singing the old 1954 hit from the film Aar Paar
Subhash K Jha
Rekha, dressed as Miss Lisa, will be dancing to the old O.P Nayyar number 'Kabhi aar kabhi paar laga teer-e-nazar', originally picturised on Shyama in Guru Dutt's 1954 film Aar Paar.
"In her transformation from a tawaif to a modern dancer in Yatra, we've used the remix number," the director Gautam Ghose says, This will be Rekha's second cabaret number after Vinod Chopra's Parineeta.
"The remix number occurs when Nana Patekar revisits Rekha in Hyderabad's Mehndi Gali. She shocks him, as I'm sure she'll shock the audience, when she launches into 'Kabhi aar kabhi paar'", says Ghose. "Rekha had a ball shooting it. But in the evening her character goes back to singing traditional music."
The film moves on two levels. "On one level it undertakes a physical trip, and on the other, there's a fictional journey," says Ghose. "Nana Patekar is a novelist and Rekha is the protagonist in his fiction. The real and fictional characters somehow mingle. Nakul Vaid plays a filmmaker who visualises a film based on Nana's novel."
According to the director Rekha was a bit selfconscious, for the first few days, about the ambience which was different from the big commercial films. "Then she got completely involved. Rekha loves playing mysterious characters. That's why I chose her. Rekha wants me to make Rabindranath Tagore's Binodini with her in the lead. In Yatra she plays her own age," he says.
