Part 144: the dream and the past

Sudev came to Haweli in the morning itself as planned earlier. Dev got ready to go along with him.

Yeshpal: Dev, I am coming too

Dev : dadaji

But Yeshpal blocked his further talk by raising his hand up to stop him.

Dev respected that overruling request of dadaji and brought the jeep near to the porch. Sushma reminded them about the follow up time as they drove away.

Dev watched dadaji as he was dreamingly looking at the plowing land . He walked near its edges and then walked thru the shaken mud. Dev saw an unimaginable smile appearing on his dadaji's lips and his eyes widening with happiness, seeing the land getting ready...

Dev: dadaji, I haven't seen you this happy any time before! what are you thinking?

Dev: our dream!

Yeshpal in trance, looking at the land: ha, mine and your dadi's. More than me, it was her dream to have this grape field. When we struggled in this land to begin our journey , we put each step together, sometimes it was our sweat that wet the land for us, the land is so beautiful here and our dreams also linked to these greenery only. I was able to fulfill all her wish ,except this. When Dr. prakash said that I don't have much hope, I told her, "I wish to see this also completed before I come to you". Maybe looking at my helpless daughter and the villagers struggle to fulfill my wish , God was greatful to me granted me to stay some more time. Don't know for how long, but what ever He allowed for me now, I want to dream, so that when I go up to be near her, I can tell her how beautiful her dream was.

Dev: dadaji, they know you are not well.

Dadaji: who said I am not well. I am all well , and I get that energy to move on when I am with them. You know.

Dev: I agree with you, but for now, I can be here for some more time, and want you to go and take rest. Today this much is enough, ok.

Dev called out for Sudev: Sudev, take Dadaji back to haweli and bring the jeep back, just tell Buva that I will be there on time.

Dadaji: Dev, I can stay back

Dev: I know, so only I said, I can stay here and you are going to take rest now. We need to go to hospital too later, so I don't want you take more physical strains. This time , you need to listen to me ok.

Dadaji tried to give that tucked smile, seeing his granson's overruling , and then silently walked towards the jeep.

Sudev while going: Dev babu , I asked my mom to bring some cold drink for you, have it, she will be happy.

Dev just smiled

Dev was walking around, he looked back at the land on the other side which was ending at the river bank, and thought about dadaji's words. You have dreams too, then why you didn't tell that to dad. He can make it possible for you within matter of time, but'

Time ticked by, he saw a lean old lady coming with a small jug in her hand, keeping a big smile on her face

Dev greeted her with the same smiel and said: namasthe maaji, you are Sudev's mom, right?

She smiled again for recognizing her and said: ha, but one correction I am not his mom, his dadi. looking at his suprised face the old lady said: don't be surprised, this is the magic of chandenpur, even the wind gives you energy to look young. She said she can bring it to you, but I wanted to see you closer, so I made her to get back to work. What I will do getting back into the field, it is her age to work hard, now. Right?

Dev smiled: so you are Sudev's dadi

The village lady continued with a smile: ha, Dev babu, I wished to see you for long, and now lucky to meet you so close. One time I was sick, and then one or the other reason I couldn't get near you. Let me see you close . the innocent lady kept the jug nearby and held his face in her arms and said: you look like your dad only. Very handsome. Then giving a loud laugh she continued: you maybe thinking why I said that , right. Telling you the truth, he was very adorable, and always seen with Mohan saab, we never thought he will leave Yeshpal ji like that especially in that situation.

She looked into Dev's blank eyes and said: we all thought he may come back soon, but he didn't. Nobody had the guts to ask Yeshpal ji about Surender babu, thinking that may hurt him more. We listened to your granny's stories and many of the time her stories reflected his come back. Sushma only told us about you guys, that also very rarely. Tell you dev babu, we all wished and prayed everyday for your dad to come back and come back with his family. your sushma buva was so proud to tell that you are very charming, and we used to tease RAdhika when she sued to act as princess. Radhika betiya used to feel shy when we ask her about you. And he did and came with his lovely family, his handsome prince. Who now just remind me off his dad's younger time.

But then her eyes caught the site of the jug: Oh devbabu, with my happiness of meeting you, I forgot to serve you this. One minute. And while pouring the cold drink into a glass she mentioned: you don't know how happy I am feeling now. All those days are coming back to me so clearly.

She extended the filled glass to Dev and he took it from her blindly, giving his full ears to her.

He slowly gulped it down feeling a lump in his throat.

His cell rang at that very moment that he gave the empty glass in Sudev's dadi's hand

She with a smile walked away.

Dev took the cell in his hand, but kept his eyes on that disappearing figure, he didn't even realize that he forgot to thank her, but that old lady walked away with the same smile , not disturbing his flow.

Dev looked back at the cell as it went in silent mode. He kept that it in his hand and kept his eyes on that old lady.

Time ticked by, after absorbing everything in, he came back to reality. He checked back at the cell which started ringing again

Dev suddenly: Hello

Radhika: what happened? Are you ok?

Dev with that shaky voice: ha, ha Radhika, I am fine, why?

Radhika in her doubtful voice: nothing, you didn't pick it earlier and now it soud so heavy, is everything ok there?

Dev tried to force a smile: ha, everything is fine her, in fact dadaji came to the field today with me,

Their talk went on

Radhika as if remembering: Oh I forgot to tell you, actually I called to give a happy news

Dev: what?

Radhika: guess

Dev in that blank moment was unable to think anything; Radhika, just tell me

Radhika: you guess

Dev: please Radhika

Radhika: ok then, papa is going to fix Sammy lechu marriage date

Dev: who!, when,! what happened?, I thought dad said after her studies

Radhika:: I know, but dad said today that he already talked to Sammy's dad and they agreed with it too

Dev: why the sudden change

Radhika: I don't know anything about it, Suchi mom asked, but dad just said: he think that will be ok, when we fixed everything then why to wait.

Dev: oh Good, and what lechu is saying

Radhika: as usual, she is fine with it. You call Sammy later and ask him ok.

Dev: um

Radhika: ok then

Dev: ha

Radhika: ye, not that fast, why no words for Ruhi?

Dev: I know that, so only thought not to disturb her, give a sweet kiss to her, tell her I am coming soon to take her in my arms

RAdhika with a smile: ummm, take care

Dev: um, you too

Dev kept the phone down and walked over that shaken mud pieces and tried to go back into those times , trying to visualize his dad's bowed head and his sudden escape form the situation. Dad, why did you do that?. You always tells me to face any difficulties and when it came to you, you ran way from it, leaving your babuji and sister behind. How can you dad? All this time , I thought you are a fighter. Mom always told me that you struggled so much , sacrificed so much to get into where you are now. She always teased you about it, but I know in your absence mom made me to realize how much you are missing us, how much you want to get everything possible for us to make us comfortable ...but then why your chandenpur never called you back, why you never thought of them, when you got into that level where everything was possible for you, why you needed buva's letter to remind you of their existences. Why dad?.

Time passed quick and Dev was happy to hear that his dadaji is getting better. He took the advice from the doctor , and they reached little late that evening .

He called home and told that he will be returning next day morning after settling few more things back in chandenpur. Dev made sure enough help to assist dadaji and sushma for few days back there, and also they discussed about Lechu's marriage. Time just flew from there and soon the dark shade gave way to day light.

Dev took that morning walk around, saw the kids running with their ususal request, and he walked up near the river bank, he sat there for sometime and then looked back at the grassy land, he thought of Dadi's dream, the old picture came in his mind and he imagined his grandparents seeing the dream together.

Then it was all went in a faster pace, he got everything ready in quick and giving hugs to his loved ones there, with his expectation of them to be back in Delhi house soon for the marriage, he drove the car , passing the gate. The dried four eyes kept their gaze still on that empty path, unable to believe that he is gone from their sight already.

Thank you for your response and few of you waited for me to update. that is a good feeling for me that you still be able to tolerate me. Yes, so now everything is in front of him, including his dadaji's dream and his dad's past.. and at this moment , he ran back to his family... so the twist and turns and the debate will happen as it goes with this happy moments of sammy lechu marriage... let see how far you can hold on with me.. and of course, next part will be Dev and Ruhi .. and radhika too.. or maybe suchi.. may eb sammy too... no clue how everyhting will come ou, but it will be coming

Thank you for updating this FF--was missing Ruhi--and now she was sleeping too...

Dev is very disturbed----that he even forgot to ask about Ruhi; his dad's past is catching up with him, along with dadaji's dream...the burden he is going to carry with him to Delhi---will that play a part in what the future brings?...

There are certain modes in life---which changes the direction; this seems to be one of them for Dev-----he has come a long way from a student wanting to go to US for his studies to now...trying to fulfill someone else's dream...
