Part 145: Dev, Ruhi, and his Radhika
Radhika ran near to the car side as she saw its coming in passing the gate. She went and stood near, and waited for him to come out. Dev noticed the smiley face of Radhika and her whole happiness was drawn clearly in her eyes and her face.
Dev just wrapped his one arm around her shoulder: where is everybody?
Radhika papa in office, Mom went to clinic, Lechu in college and RUhi sleeping
Suddenly Dev: all by herself!!
Radhika: um, it may take another one hour for her to wake up now. She had a nice bath and had eaten well, so.
Dev tightening his forehead: but she should know that I am coming
Radhika with a teasing smile: that is between you two, I told her as I was giving her bath that you are coming. Still she preferred that sleep.
Dev: I know it, you did it intentionally, right?
As they were walking into the house
Radhika: why should I do that?
Dev: so that you get all my attention, simple
Radhika's smile disappeared: hum, i never thought of that... but then she saw his teasy smile...?
Dev trying to give a teasy smile: ha, it is clearly written on your face that how much you missed me
Radhika with a serious tone , looking into his eyes, and eagerly: didn't you miss me
Dev holding her shoulder: Ha Radhika, I missed you so much, so only I flew to here as quick as I can
Radhika: but I am not seeing that much happiness in your eyes
Dev tried to hide his face
Radhika: you are ok, right?
Dev brought back a forceful smile and said: why you are asking that way, you know how much I missed you, then
Radhika just walked in silence
Dev: Radhika, I need to take a quick shower, and then need a hot tea.
Radhika: ha, come, I will get you everything and make the tea
Dev: no, I will be fine, you go ahead and put the tea, by then I will be right down with you
Radhika: ji she tried to walk away but then pausing she turned and looked at Dev, who was trying to climb on that steps and she asked: are you really ok?'
Dev paused and then bringing a smile he said: I have a small headache, it will go away after a shower and tea
Radhika: ok, then one minute
Dev watched as she disappeared into the dining room.
He slowly climbed those stairs and then entered into his room. He saw the little one sleeping comfortably inside the bassinet, he just touched that soft sole of hers once and then went and picked a towel.
When Radhika came up to check he was still under the shower, she heard the phone bell ringing and went to answer it.
As she kept the receiver down, she noticed Dev already sipping onto the tea
"it was Buva, asking whether you reached or not?"
Dev sipping onto tea: um
Radhika went near and sat near him: why youa re looking so quiet
Dev: told you Radhika, I have a small headache
Radhika: then you take rest, and may take a nap, that will help
Dev: no I am fine
Radhika didn't say much , but just watched his movements silently.
Dev: maybe you are right, a nap will help. He went upstairs
Radhika just watched him as she picked that empty cup from the table.
Later she went and checked and found him laying with his closed eyes. She checked on Ruhi who was slowly waking up from her sleep. Time passd quick, Lechu came back from college and so does Suchi.
Dev opened his eyes to the loud cry of Ruhi, and he sat suddenly. He rubbed over his eyeslids and looked as if in disbelief.
"Sorry, I tried not to disturb you, but she is very demanding, see she can't stay wet for few minutes!'
Radhika said that as she was changing Ruhi
Dev: what time is it?
Rahdika : 6
Dev: I slept that long!
Radhika didn't say anything
Dev got up and went and freshen up and came near and looked at Ruhi and she gave him a smile; all his mood changed seeing it and he gave an ear to ear smile: hai my princess, did you miss me,... hu..., come to papa
Ruhi shaking her legs up high in the air, smiled showing her pink gums and raised her hands up with folding her fingers together.
Dev forgot the world around him: oh how sweet to see my little one, come my little princess.
Within fraction of second, she got into his arms and he held her in his arms cradle
Dev lifted her up and placed a kiss over her forehead, and then looking into her eyes said: Oh dear, you grown so big, look at you
All this time Radhika stood silently watching the expression change in Dev, all of a sudden he became old person.
"Is your headache gone?'
Dev looked at Radhika's face, as she asked
Dev suddenly pausing and then recollecting it back: ha Radhika, I am feeling better
Radhika: I can see that
Dev tried to give a smile as he looked back at ruhi's face
Radhika with a roothi sound: I know now your head ache is gone, and that's not because of my tea
Dev still looking at Ruhi's face: then?
Radhika sitting with a heavy face: that's after holding your angel in your arms
Dev: ha, of course Radhika, look at her, her lovely smile... she grown this big
RAdhika again in that heavy tone: ha within a week, she grown sooo BIG
Dev : I can see it Radhika , so only
Radhika: ok then, you take care of her, let me help mom in kitchen
Dev: Is Mom here?
RAdhika: ha, all are here except papa
Suddenly the smile disappeared from his face, but then Suchi walked in: what happened Dev, you ok?
Dev: ha mom, it was a small headache.
The talk went on inside, and Dev held Ruhi in his arms, and didn't even listen to Suchi's words to put her down to play around.
Suchi: Keep her down Dev, then only you can see how well she can turn over now on her tummy.
Dev: its all fine mom, let her stay with me some more time.
Lechu: let me see, it is time for dad to be here at any moment, you don't believe he just play with her for the rest of the evening, talking to her, and making all of us fools in their talk.
Dev didn't give his ears much, and was just studying his little ones eyes, and shaking her hands and rubbing on her legs.
The bell rang at the front door,
"I think it is dad, let me check" saying that Lechu went to front room
Dev stayed back in kitchen with Ruhi
Time ticked by, and soon Surender appeared after fresh up and changing to his home dress.
"where is my jaan"
He just came nad took Ruhi from Dev's arms and started talking to Ruhi :" oh, so why today my little one is so serious, oh , um, your papa is here, ok that is a good news, and did you tell him all the good news happening here, ha, did you tell him?'
Dev just passively listen to his dad's talk and slowly walked out from the kitchen
"so, Dev, Is everything settled back in chandenpur?'
Dev just paused for a second and then said: ha, all is well.
Surender smiling at Ruhi: see, I know , when my son is there, he will take care of everything. And now your papa has to take care of the responsibility of this business too, then we two will sit and play we can go to park and play, we can go for shopping , for so many toys, and then we can go for fun rides, heina beta, ha"
Listening to his talk: ha, poor Ruhi , with all these she may have to listen to your business too
Surender: better than your clinic talk
Suchi: ha for everything you are better than anyone else, right?
"that's what we all think, mom"
Suchi looked at Dev! who was keeping that cold water bottle back in fridge after taking a small gulp.
Suchi: what?
Dev: nothing and walking towards his dad, he extended hia arm out, : Can I hold her
Surender moved away his arm: nope, this is our time
Suchi: aha, now the fight begins
Surender: fight with me, no one will win
Dev: I know dad, but sometimes you need to give up too
Surender: give up what? Looking into Ruhi's hand: I won't let her go out from my shoulder. Dev, they say it is the right of the grandkids to be spoiled by their grandparents.
Dev: Then why did you denied our right , dad?
He asked that softly but sternly looking into his dad's face
Surender paused for a second, but then looked at the serious face of Dev, he stood in doubt
Dev tried to force a smile: Don't hold onto old saying dad, then the parents won't be happy
Suchi: why?
Dev: they also need time to play with kids , right
Surender: Oh like that? No need to, this is the time for you to start working, if you wrok hard now, then when your grandkid come, then you can sit and play with them.
Dev: what about those who worked hard to bring that smile on their kids face and the kid just leaving them behind one day and not turning back once to brign that smile back.
Surender stood in confusion, but then Radhika came up: Papa, babuji is on phone, asking something about the marriage.
Surender looked at Radhika's face
Radhika looked back in doubt.
Surender just looked at Dev once and then walked slowly and gave Ruhi in Radhika's arms and walked away
Suchi coming near Dev: what did you say?
Dev bringing an innocent smile, lifted his arm up, and pinching on her both cheeks , said in a teasy tone: what Suchi, after how many days, I am getting a chance to play with Ruhi, and see how dad is , so selfish, keeping her in his hand only. Then
Suchi: Deeev, that hurts, leave my cheeks
Dev: you look really beautiful Suchi, especially when you get angry
Suchi: Deeev
Dev with a smile, leaving his mom's cheek, wrapped his arms around his mom and said: love you mom, I missed you a lot
Suchi stood in confusion, and looked at his face as he loosened his grip
Suchi: what is this Dev?
Dev: I don't know mom, I don't know, but something is there, don't know how to say it out.
Radhika was looking at the scene with doubt as she did not get what they all were saying
Dev looking at RAdhika's conused face: Radhika, give her to me
Radhika: no this is her dinner time, if she gets really tired, then she won't eat anything, so let me feed her something solid
Dev: what? She doesn't look hungry
Radhika: not for you, but let me feed her and then you play with her for how much ever you want , ok
Radhika went in getting things for Ruhi, while Dev and Suchi were talking about Lechu's marriage. Soon the time changed and Ruhi was getting ready to bed. Dev came in to his room
Dev: Radhika , I can rock her, you go finish your things
Radhika: but
Dev: she will be fine with me, please
Radhika left the room , turning once to see how Dev was rocking Ruhi in his arms.
When she came back, she saw them sleeping in bed already, Dev wrapping his arms around his little one, turning to her side.
Radhika went to freshen up , she turned the lights off, and went to bed. She was totally into confusion seeing Dev's behavior, why he is acting so different? when mom asked to call him for a family talk, he already slept with Ruhi, but didn't he take that nap earlier?, that also he woke up very late, and now, there is something going on?
" Radhika"
His sound made her to jerk slightly in that darkness.
Dev: why you turned all lights off?
Radhika then only remembered that she didn't turn the night shade on
She was about to get up
Dev: its ok Radhika, will Ruhi be fine in darkness
Radhika: No I don't know
Dev: she will be fine, she is in my arms , right
Radhika moved her throat in doubt: um, were you not sleeping?
Dev: will she needs to be fed?
Radhika: she wakes up towards morning only now a days, sleeps more thru the night
Dev: good, then don't disturb her , let her sleep
Radhika: ji
Dev adjusted himself and lay on his back, and held Ruhi more comfortably in his arms. And tried to touch Radhika with his other arm saying: why you are laying so distantly: come closer to me
Radhika tried to look thru the darkness to see his face, she slowly moved in and then lifted her face up to see his eyes clearly
Dev: what ?
Radhika: are you ok?
Dev: ha Radhika
Radhika: but
Dev: I am feeling really tired, can we talk tomorrow
Radhika tried to move away
But Dev held her within his left arm: I said, we can talk tomorrow, doesn't tell you to move away
Radhika without understanding, slowly rested her face over his chest. She felt his arms wrapping it around to make her comfortable in his hold.
Radhika's eyes were open and she tried to see the difference in that darkness.
Time ticked by, Radhika's eyes were still open and she was listening to his uneven chest movement which was trying hard to breath in, his irregular heartbeat, she slowly wrapped her arms around his chest level, and then moved more closer to him, she felt his arms tightening around her more, as if he is struggling to get something out from his chest.
" Ha Radhika, I am feeling so suffocated inside, don't know how to tell you, but I need to come out from this, and I need your support, will you be with me?'
Radhika surprised to hear his sound
She tried to lift her head up to look at him
But Dev held her back closer
Dev: please
Radhika: why you are saying like this, I am not understanding anything.
Dev: me too Radhika, I don't know what is happening with me, but I know I am not that old Dev
Radhika didn't say anything, she tightened her grip again and made him to feel that she is listening
Dev: Ha Radhika, I don't know anything, I just wish to run away to some place, I am afraid to close my eyes, its all scary things that is coming in front of my eyes., .
Radhika: I wish I understand what you are saying?
Dev: me too RAdhika, wish , you understand it too. But in which ever angle I look, I feel something went wrong, I am seeing things around me, I can see a racing horse when I close my eyes, I can hear the heavily flowing river when I close my eyes, I can see the eyes that are asking me where am i? I am afraid to close my eyes Radhika
Radhika: I want to see your face now
Dev: No Radhika, I am afraid, don't leave me, just hold me tight, I feel better when you hold me in your arms
Radhika: Dev, please
Dev: Ha Radhika, I feel safe, when you hold me tight.
Radhika: you had a bad dream...!
Dev: why you asked?
Radhika: when you came you said, you are not feeling well, and then took that nap, and now maybe you are really sick, maybe a fever or something, you want me to check with mom
Dev: Radhika, I don't know when I closed my eyes , maybe I couldn't close my eyes the night before, and I was driving crazily to get here, to see you, but then I don't know, I think being near you itself gave me that comfort that I slept off, but now
Radhika: I need to turn that light on
Dev: Radhika please
Radhika: no, I want to see your eyes.
Dev: please
Radhika got up from his force and turned the night stand on, and looked at his face
He suddenly closed his eyes, and tried to avoid looking into her eyes
Radhika moving near his face: touched his forehead and then his neck, and there was no sign of any fever.
Radhika: Tell me what happened?
Dev lay there silently
Radhika: dev
She saw his eyeballs moving side to side, his tensed face. Unable to hold back, she placed comforting kiss over his forehead, his eyes, and then his cheeks. : I don't know what is happening with you, we talked almost everyday very frequently, and you sounded all good till yesterday. But then you tried to find excuse when I called you from yesterday and before even telling me, you started from there, and it is buva who told that you are coming, but then when you came you were asking for Ruhi, and now you are saying something so strange that I am not understanding, please open your eyes and look at me. I am with you, I am near you, please open your eyes and tell me what is going on
Dev with little hesitation opened his eyes and met her eyes that were pleading him to look at her.
Radhika moving more closer: now you tell me, what it is all about? What is bothering you?
Dev gulped and then said: I don't know Radhika, I am feeling strange, I don't know what to say. I feel like everything is coming back to me. I am seeing chandenpur, where everybody is getting ready for marriage, and all are happy, but something bad is going to happen
Suddenly Radhika gave a relief sigh:: oh so this is it, Oh My God, you really scared me Dev. You should have told me this earlier.
Dev looked at her in doubt
Radhika: marriage is not happening in chandenpur, it is going to be here, and ha, everyone is going to come here, and as a brother you will be very busy, and nothing bad, its all good that is going to happen. So actually now you don't want to send your sister away.
Bringing a smile she said: see if you say that, Sammy will kill you, poor him, he used to come every evening, with an excuse to meet Ruhi with one or the other toy, actually you know he is coming to meet Lechu only, ha he plays with Ruhi. I think, so only Dad decided to conduct the marriage now itself, instead of waiting for the college completion. What you think everyone is like you?. Remember, even after fixing our marriage, you behaved as if I am from a different planet or something. Always asked me to keep quiet, and then going for camping and all with your friends.
Radhika's mood totally changed, she continued: and you know, you didn't even care to leave me alone here and flew away for years.
Dev: why did you let me go then? You should have told me to stay back.
Radhika: but you were always talking about your dream of holding that degree in your hand , na. then how can I hold you back
Dev: but you are the one who had that attitude? You only put forth all that demands
RAdhika: aha, how easy to blame on me, I thought if I say like that, then you will come back quick, but
Dev: didn't I come and flew away with you, taking you under my wings
Radhika trying to hide her defeat: ha, but
Dev: what but, there is no but, see I took your hand in mine after I got that assurance that I can take care of you
Radhika: really!!!, then why you are telling all this strange thing now, I am not getting anything. I know it is Lechu's marriage, and we all know Sammy now very well, then
Dev : um Sammy, I know how playful he is
Radhika: no he is not like that, he is a serious person
Dev: who , Sammy/?
Radhika: why? Don't you think so. He is so lovely and happy, and always come with that smile
Dev: ha, he comes with that smile and the minute he see dad's face, it just disappear unknowingly
Radhika: don't say like that, you were also like that, you used to feel the same way when you met babuji , right?
Dev: who me, I had no issue with babuji
He saw Radhika's face, and her questioning eyes, Dev as if admitting it: ok baba, I had some uneasiness feelings, but now it all resolved na, now we are the best buddies.
Radhika: then I am sure Sammy and papa will be best buddies soon too
Dev: let see
Radhika: bet
Dev: radhika
Radhika: what?
Dev: I am feeling sleepy
Radhika: didn't you just said something that you are not feeling sleepy
Dev: ha but, Ruhi is in my arms, and you moved away from me, I told you to hold me tight...
Radhika with a smile: umhum
Dev: what?
Radhika felt shy suddenly, she just nodded her head
Dev: now what happened? Ye, that's not fair
Radhika: you scared me earlier, now this is your punishment, goodnight, I am feeling sleepy
Dev: Radhika, please
Radhika yarned hard in front of him and said: see
Dev: ok baba, I agree that you are tired
Radhika with a smile rested her head back near his chest, he wrapped his arms around her shoulder, held her tight. Radhika with a shy smile, just placed a kiss over his neck.
Dev: not enough , more
Radhika smiled again and tightened her arms around him.
Dev felt some relief, and he looked up at the ceiling as time ticked away.
