The Curry-ous Readers 🍛 Book Talk Reading Challenge September 2025
One of India's finest talents, Pankaj Kapoor makes his long-awaited debut as a director with Mausam. Positioned as an epic love story, the film features his son Shahid opposite the stunning Sonam Kapoor. The promos have been successful in generating a buzz and the fact that Shahid hasn't had a release in a long time makes the wait even more exciting. Music director Pritam, responsible for giving the actor some of his biggest songs (Kismet Konnection, Jab We Met), composes this time around too. The album, comprising six original songs, interestingly doesn't feature any prominent female voice.
There is no denying that Rabba main toh mar gaya oye sticks in your head and is destined to be popular. It's a lovely Punjabi melody soulfully sung by both Shahid Mallya and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in their respective versions. But there are parts of this song that sound similar to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's Tere bin nahi lagda.
Sajh dhaj ke is about the protagonist teasing a foreign-returned lad. Singer Mika, who has made a living out of belting boisterous Punjabi bhangra dance tracks, impresses yet again. But he seriously needs to attempt a new genre now. Ustad Rashid Khan is marvelous in his rendition of Poore se zara sa kam hain but this pathos-heavy, classical number can get you a tad weary.
At nearly seven minutes, Ik tu hi tu hi is the longest and most haunting track in this album. Ustad Sultan Khan opens the number with his alaap before Hans Raj Hans takes over. Pritam skillfully blends Kamil's evocative lyrics, Hans's brilliant vocals and a striking male chorus with a poignant melody to create a beautiful song of despair and pain. The other two versions of this number by the Wadali brothers and Shahid Mallya are equally moving.
Aag lage uss aag ko (Karsan Sargathia), based on the classical Gujarati folk song, is energetic and loud. Mallo malli (Tochi Raina) stands out in the otherwise melody-laced album. This techno, club dance number seems to have been force-fitted into the film to showcase the hero's dancing skills. And even though the signature hook is strikingly similar to Kyun paisa paisa karti hain (De Dhana Dhan), Mallo malli is undeniably catchy!
Though Pritam plays it safe by sticking to his comfort zone, he does not disappoint with his music for Mausam.
Verdict: Pleasant stuff.
Mausam may be Pritam's best work this year. The album offers you one finely crafted track after another and makes you yearn for more. I have a grouse with the composer. Rabaa main to mar gaya oye sung by Shahid Mallya features in the film. This is great disservice to Rahat Fateh Ali Khan whose version is infinitely better. Not that Shahid has done a bad job. In fact he is superb. But the difference between the two versions is that while Shahid's version pleases the ears, Rahat's touches the soul. Pritam has kept orchestration to the minimum and has let his singers take centre stage. The result is a haunting melody that makes you hit the repeat button again and again.
The same can be said of the Sufiesque Ik tu hi tu hi. Hans Raj Hans has done a commendable job but the Wadali brothers take it to another lever altogether. Shahid Mallya's reprise too sounds good. It's great to hear different versions of this melodious song but it's unfair to the Wadali brothers that their version won't feature in the film. The Sufi touch continues with Poore se zara sa kam hain. This pathos filled song is sung with just the right touch by Rashid Khan. It sounds more like an unplugged version than a recorded piece and makes you recall you own heartbreaks.
Mausam is a Shahid Kapoor film after all so how can dance numbers be far behind? The first one is Sajh dhaj ke, a full-blown bhangra track sung by Mika Singh and Pankaj Kapur. It has two remix versions as well and I for one couldn't make out any difference from the original. Then, there is Aag lage us aag ko sung and composed by Karsan Das Sagathia. This fast paced garba number reminds you of Dholi taro dhol baaje but is entertaining nevertheless. Next is Mallo malli, a true dance floor number sung by Tochi Raina. Pritam uses Western instruments for the first time and listening to it you can imagine Shahid grooving to the tunes. It has a remix version sung by Lehmber Hussainpuri and Hard Kaur which surprisingly is better than the original.
All-in-all, Mausam is another power-packed OST from Pritam. He has shown that he can produce great melody using folk and classical orchestration and more power to him for that. Hats off to lyricist Irshad Kamil too for his meaningful word musings. The album has whetted my appetite for the film, am waiting eagerly for its release.
