My friend was asking me:

Why so many Bollywood filmi songs are direct copies of English songs?

At first I thought:

There might not be many examples, but then she listed so many!

I was quite surprised:

Some of the most famous Hindi songs are copies! Examples: Bombay Meri Jaan, Zara Zara Touch Me, Gila Gila...

Do you think we Indians are copying too much?

Some of the biggest copiers are also our most esteemed and famous music directors! What does this mean? Is this even legal?

No harm copying so long as one's own culture is also preserved.
Music is generally has universal appeal.
I do love music of all types, Asian, Latin and Western.

Seriously, though, copying without permission or consent is called plagiarism and is a serious offence. On the other hand, it is sometimes difficult to to distinguish between deliberate work of plagiarism and "works inspired by other sources" or simply accidental similarities that occur.
