I, despite being a Bengali and having an inclination towards Bannerjee, find it completely absurd to change a State's name just to fit ethnicity and linguistic pride. It will create more problems for non-Bengalis to pronounce the name properly just as in the case with Kolkata. While I admire Mamata's enthusiasm and deep rooted patriotism, I think she needs to behave more maturely and a bit less emotionally. Immediately after coming into power she drew herself into another such useless controversy by renaming a University as Madrasa as a part of a pre-election promise to certain Islamic group.
Regarding why not just Bengal, I guess Bangladeshis would not take that kindly. This West Bengal - East Bengal etymologies bear their origin in the short-lived 1905 Bengal Partition. Even till date most older Bengalis refer Bangladesh as Purba Banga or East Bengal.
Speaking of National Language, India has NO national language in the first place. This term itself is extra-constitutional. India has a list of "Official Languages" recognized at both State and Union. For the Union the official languages are Hindi and English. And there are 24 other Scheduled languages under the 8th Schedule.
Anyway, more than changing names of the State, I just hope that she re-introduces English as a primary medium in Government Schools - a system that was abolished by the previous Government 30 years back in the name of (fake) regional pride.
