Yet another state of India the state of West Bengal has changed its named to "Paschim banga" by the Mamta Bannerjee govt in the state. Are such name changes really required? What about all the expenses that will be incurred now to alter all govt letterheads, hoardings, university names etc? If at all they had to change the name why not just Bengal?

I don't know about the administrative costs and what they'll amount to, so I won't go into that.
However, I do know that Bengalis call the state as Paschim Banga anyways, just as they used to say Kolkata even when it was officially Calcutta.

Having said that, the State Government is ought to incur expenses for all formalities and not you and me. A reason behind the change of name could be the elimination of the English word WEST and replacing it with an ethnic word.
There is a very interesting anecdote for why MADRAS became Chennai, MADRAS apparently being a telugu word, MUD - hair and RAAS - write. It is said that when the British were surveying the land of Madras, desperately wanting to give it a name which was when a Telugu man was confronted and asked for it. The impatient man was believed to have uttered MADRAS, meaning "write it as my pubic hair" and the exhausted British having approved it.

I'll call it by its Latin name Bengala Occidental

I personally find name changes absurd because locals call it a place by the local name and then there is the English formal name.

It is not as if I'm forced to say Budesrepublik Deutschland or I insist that the deutsch leute say Germany for me. Ich bin schiesse!! Dahnke shoen! Can't we all be happy and comfortable with the languages we speak. Khuiy Moskva.

They changed state's name to get higher up in the alphabetical listing by just translating West into Paschim in Bengal😳

However, there is no essence behind the change😕

^ It is PASHCHIM BANGA. It calls for complete ethnicity now. Why should Indian states have english names when English is not the National Language of India ?

Neither would I be happy to live in a state whose etymology seems ambiguous nor feel absurdity in having it changed to something more ethnic or aesthetic.

I, despite being a Bengali and having an inclination towards Bannerjee, find it completely absurd to change a State's name just to fit ethnicity and linguistic pride. It will create more problems for non-Bengalis to pronounce the name properly just as in the case with Kolkata. While I admire Mamata's enthusiasm and deep rooted patriotism, I think she needs to behave more maturely and a bit less emotionally. Immediately after coming into power she drew herself into another such useless controversy by renaming a University as Madrasa as a part of a pre-election promise to certain Islamic group.

Regarding why not just Bengal, I guess Bangladeshis would not take that kindly. This West Bengal - East Bengal etymologies bear their origin in the short-lived 1905 Bengal Partition. Even till date most older Bengalis refer Bangladesh as Purba Banga or East Bengal.

Speaking of National Language, India has NO national language in the first place. This term itself is extra-constitutional. India has a list of "Official Languages" recognized at both State and Union. For the Union the official languages are Hindi and English. And there are 24 other Scheduled languages under the 8th Schedule.

Anyway, more than changing names of the State, I just hope that she re-introduces English as a primary medium in Government Schools - a system that was abolished by the previous Government 30 years back in the name of (fake) regional pride.

How about changing Mamata Bannerjee's name to ...MOMTA BONNERJEE😛😉
When East Bengal became Bangladesh...I think Mamata Banerjee should rethink this and better named the province as only BENGAL , I feel it Simple, memorable and already well known. These Ministers have nothing useful to do other than getting into unnecessary things to waste public money. Can anyone ask them to make thing easier and not to complicate? !!😕
