Hindi Films- In English/Americanizing??

Recently, the movie Being Cyrus came out. It was entirely in English and the makers of the movie said that its good for Bollywood to make movies in English, because the most of the population speaks English.

MY question is- Should Hindi Movies be 'Americanized?' Meaning, should the song/dance routines be cut out, should the movies be in English, etc?

MY OPINION & THOUGHTS

I DON'T THINK SO!!! I think that loses the whole ambience and character of a Hindi movie! They are made to sell in India- they are made for Indians! Why are we giving up those things that mark a Bollywood movie and make it special? Its called a Hindi movie- why aren't we treasuring our language and culture? If I want to see something in English, I will watch a Hollywood movie!

The songs and dances of Hindi films characterize Hindi movies! They make our films special! Sure- Hollywood doesn't appreciate them, but the movies are made for Indians- Not Americans!

I think this goes into a broader topic that some people want India to become the next America- they want to look like, dress like, and speak like Americans because its 'COOL.' I don't think so- Americans are using our stuff because they find it cool too- like anklets, yoga, style of clothing, henna/mehndi, etc.

Why are some Indians so ready to give up their culture? I know not all of us are- so please nobody take offense. And I know I have strayed from the topic, but I just want everyone to keep all these things in mind while answering!

Thanks๐Ÿ˜Š

I completely agree with you! Why should we change for others. I agree India should become like AMERICA..but only in terms of cleanliness and NO POVERTY. But i dont agree we shouldnt change our traditions. Take movies for instance, there are no dance and songs in Hollywood movies because THEY CANNOT DANCE!๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜† We can dance and i think we should show our talent! Also BOLLYWOOD Is like a trademark for India.Hence i disagree with the fact of that bollywood should change into hollywood!๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

It's so great to see someone with a sense of pride of Indian culture. I am against India wanting to become the "next America." Living here in America, I don't know what Indians are going after. There is nothing wrong with gaining an independence in finacial terms, but changing you whole culture over it...is wrong.
I love Indian movies the way they are. I love art movies. Why do we need to copy? In the name of making indian cinema, they are just copying american movies. There is no pride in that. Our art movies are so great. we don't need to steal ideas or copy the other culture to become modern.

I hate it because Americans already feel like they are so higher than everybody else. If we also drop our culture, we proviong that they are right.
Making movies is an art. Copying someone else is not.....
We have such a great history and we shouldn't loose it. Learn English, but don't act like that speaking hindi will degrade you. Use English to get advance, but don't act like that's the only language you know.

sorry i didnt know- but the debating contest will be read by everyone as the members debate- its not like its by PM, so everyone will use other people's points anyway. this is just another place to put those views without losing or winning. secondly, mine is more based on bollywood- i just listed extra stuff so everyone could keep those things in mind. thanks for your comments๐Ÿ˜Š

Ya this would only be one small aspect in the Debating Championship. The championship will have a wider role of how India or the East is moving towards Westernisation.

I agree with u Aparna di.. I'm not going against this topic(wildblossom's)..(plz people don't misunderstand me) .. ... But the thing which bothers me is that in this discussion we will discuss the westernization of media.. and ultimately the media plays a pivotal role in influencing our lives... so.. im just confused... ๐Ÿ˜• ๐Ÿ˜• ๐Ÿ˜• (as people in contributing their views may lead the discussion to the "westernization of our culture" rather than just focusing on bollywood.)

and yes wildblossom i agree with u and i have a high respect for ur thoughts and ideas ๐Ÿ˜Š .. but wht im saying is that this may b focused on bollywood .. then participants may be able to take points from here (and we can't have a check on them in the championship for taking views from here and use them as their own in the contest) And there the individual opinion for winning will matter..

I repeat again.. wildblossom plz don't misunderstand me ๐Ÿ˜Š i have a high regard for ur ideas.. the coincidence is just making the things more confusing for me ๐Ÿ˜• ๐Ÿ˜• ๐Ÿ˜•

(My argument has been restricted to Movies only as I am aware of a separate topic on westernization going on.)

I have nothing against Indian movies being made in English or Hindi. Its just a language and there is nothing wrong with it.

If a novel has been written in English, translating it into another language makes it lose its original charm. This is not about culture - it is about artistic depiction.

For example: the dubbed versions of Harry Potter in Hindi are laughable.

"Being Cyrus" was quoted as an example of Westernizing Indian Culture. But, I am going to point out that the story revolves around the Parsi community, which is one of the more "westernized" communities among Indians. I can guarantee that no Parsi speaks Hindi at home the way they did in Rakesh Roshan's "Khatta Meetha". They either speak a form of Parsi-Gujarati or English.

It is not always about "aping the west" as most people say. It is also about artistic freedom of expression.

Someone said that Westerners cannot dance. I disagree. Watch any old movies like "Grease" or "Sound of Music" and you will instantly see that they were very much like present day Indian Cinema with song and dance rountines, running around trees, etc.

Its not necessary that every movie must have a Song-Dance routine and must be in Hindi or another regional language. In fact, India is a secular country. Hence, we must be open to all types of ideas and movies (within limits).

PS. If anyone wishes to use any ideas given by people in this topic in the Debating championship, my suggestion is to quote the person who gave the idea and CREDIT them.

T. ... u gave a very good suggestion ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘ (the last sentence)... Now if participants will take the idea/view/argument from here and then give credit to that person.. that's a point where im very happy !!!!!!! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
Again .. thanks T. ๐Ÿ˜ณ .. enjoy ur discussions (im not gonna give my comments here.. i might loose my weapons ๐Ÿ˜† )
