Soul Connections

The reason it hurts so much to separate is because our souls are connected
-Nicholas Sparks(The Notebook)

___________________________________________________________________

"Soulmates...does anything like this really exist?" the question once again etched gunjan's mind as she brushed her fingers through the same book in her bookshelf. "Only Love Is Real-A story of soulmates reunited", one by one as Gunjan focussed on each of the letters that constituted the book's title, a wave of current passed down her spine. Her heart thumped at the thought. Despite practicing psychiatry since three years now, understanding the complexities of the human brain still seemed a daunting task to gunjan.Even the weighty books on "Psychiatric Expertise" that occupied the book shelf in her office offered no help. Rather they would just push her into a whirlpool of confusions that would further deracinate her heart and nail her emotions. But this time she couldn't stop herself, it was not possible! She pulled the book out of the shelf and sat down to read it. And within no time she was totally gripped by its emotional ingenuity.

"If meeting with a soulmate is really a source of such profound bliss and happiness, then why I felt such an ecstasy with a person who was never meant for me? What can be more blissful than what I felt for him? Nothing had ever been that perfect for me! Can that connection ever be replaced? Being with him I felt complete. My heart fulfilled and soul at peace. If I was the music, he was my melody...If I was the resonance, he was my emotional string...If was the mood, he my temperament...If I was the parched earth, he was my monsoon and If I was the crevasse, he was my depth! Just his presence in my life sucked out every ounce of ennui from my soul and filled my system with a serenity that was ethereal in every sense. His companionship and warmth filled all voids of my life...Yet we were never destined to be together!...He was never meant for me...then does this mean that someone else has been made for me..? And If yes, then will I be able to feel the same affinity and intimacy with that person which I felt with Samrat..." the questions had no end, and no answers as well. They would just leave her in a state of sheer blankness and numb all her senses.

After completing her MBBS gunjan had no reason to prolong her stay in Mumbai. Her entire family was settled in Canada and Gunjan had no one in Mumbai. Samrat too had become busy with Sheena. Though he often called to check upon gunjan, his childhood friend, but the conversations mostly ended on a bitter and a painful note for her. Samrat had so many things to tell gunjan, about his dates with Sheena...the gifts he gave her...their conversations and almost anything and everything they shared. Gunjan's heart sobbed in tears of loneliness. The pain seemed unbearable. Every time Samrat spoke something of Sheena and the bond they shared, it broke Gunjan all the more. Her world was falling apart and her heart broken into innumerable pieces. But Samrat, who was totally unaware of this damage he was causing to his best friend, continued with this habit. Apparently he was not the one to be blamed as well. Since childhood he had been confiding in gunjan...his chashmish. She was his friend, his mate, his guardian angel and his support system. Without her he could not imagine even a single day of his life. Though most of their childhood passed amidst the warmth and tenderness of each other's company, but college life was a bit different. It all started when Gunjan's family shifted base to Canada. Their parents had been family friends since their childhood days but business avenues and financial baits lured Gunjan's dad to establish his own chain of Hospitals and Health Care Centres in Canada. Both Samrat and Gunjan were 14 at that time. Teenage love had already begun to blossom between the two when the sudden news of the shift came up. Samrat was left broken. A life without his chashmish...impossible it seemed!! He resolved, either he won't let Gunjan go away or he will also accompany her. But his resolve led to nothing. The families were of course being practical. Finally the day arrived and Gunjan left for Canada as per the plans. She didn't cry even a single tear in front of him. She knew if she would break then Samrat would become even weaker. Rather she constantly affirmed him that they will always remain in touch through phone and emails. And at last they parted...she cried...he cried as well...she didn't eat and sleep well and he too fell sick...and slowly and gradually they learnt to live without each other. As such they never forgot each other but time evolved them into two different individuals. After completion of his school Samrat joined Excel College and within no time he became a heartthrob among all the girls. He made several friends over there and one such friend was Sheena. Only a few days had passed in his new college, when the news of Gunjan's return reached Samrat. She was coming back to India for further studies. She had secured herself a seat in the Bombay Medical College for the MBBS course. Becoming a doctor had been a childhood dream for Gunjan. Samrat was more than happy hearing the news of her comeback. Gunjan too hadn't been on ground since she got selected. Her elation had no boundaries...not only because she was returning to India to do something she really wished to do over here...but also because she would be seeing her long lost friend...her Samrat after a long wait of nearly 4 years. Gunjan was super excited. Finally the day came. Gunjan returned back to India and met Samrat. Once again she felt complete...she had never felt something of this sort in her whole life. Everything seemed blissfully beautiful and lively. Being with Samrat was a natural source of happiness to her. She didn't need any reason, just his mere presence was enough to make her feel happy and blessed. And Samrat, he too didn't change much...his naughtiness...his jokes...his pranks...all were just the same, BUT slowly gunjan realized that though not everything but something about him had surely changed. Though he was still her best friend, but no longer that teenage lover. It seemed to gunjan as if she continued to be in her teens only, still anticipating her teenage dreams to come true in real life, while he moved on with age. He moved on from being HER Samrat to just Samrat! But she still hoped that one day Samrat would be awakened to the fact that within the depths of their beautiful friendship, blossomed a feeling of love that had existed almost since ever. But that day never came! Everyday Samrat broke her hopes all the more with his indifference. And one day he shattered them completely. The day was when Samrat committed himself to Sheena!

A sudden beep broke gunjan out of her thoughts. It was a text on her phone. As she checked the phone to see the message, a sense of amazement beckoned her. Two hours had passed since she came here, to her office and became completely lost in the book. So much lost that she had no track of time and space. She had come to the office, she had been temporarily provided with, in the Canadian Psychiatric Research Centre, just to collect some important books, she thought she might be needing for the next one week with her new patient back at her dad's hospital and ended up spending almost two odd hours over here! The book surely had some hypnotizing effect over her. Every time she read it overwhelmed her senses with its exceptional nuance. Gunjan looked down at her watch. She was surely running out of time. It was already turning dark and she needed to start as soon as possible as it would take her a drive of another two hours to reach her place. Moreover she also needed some quality time to study the case well, as her dad had fixed an appointment with that new patient the next morning only. Gunjan bookmarked the page she was reading at and packed the book along with all other books she was taking with her. Bidding her pleasantries to all the friends and acquaintances she made during the training sessions and seminars held at the research centre, Gunjan left the place in her car.

Gunjan's dad ran a chain of Hospitals and Health care centres across America and one such centre was situated on the outskirts of the Canadian countryside where gunjan's family lived as well. Two months had passed since Gunjan had been home. The exhausting schedules of seminars and research programmes at various hospitals and Psychiatry Centres across Canada, kept her way too busy to be home.

"Regression therapy-the art of reviving a patient's memory, of both the present life and past lives, through hypnosis", had become Gunjan's new area of expertise. It was due to the same reason that her dad had called her last week to come back home as a special case had arrived in which her assistance was needed. Gunjan was confused about all this. There were a hell lot of experienced and well trained psychiatrists in her dad's hospital then why was he so keen on her attending to this patient? What was so special about him? Strange it was! But gunjan had never been the kind of child to unnecessarily question her parents, specially her dad. She knew if her dad was so desperate, then the situation must have been grave. Moreover, now she too missed her family. Returning home felt emotionally fulfilling.

It took Gunjan around 2 hrs 15 minutes to reach her place, almost as she had thought. Finally she was home...back to her original nest. Meeting all the family members all over again, her mom, dad, grandma, Chachu and her two cousins, Uday and Diya, felt so amazing to gunjan. Being with them felt calm and safe. They were the only people because of whom Gunjan could gather enough strength to come back to life after her heartbreak. It was their love which gave gunjan a reason to start living once again despite of the devastation she had been through.

"How immensely serene it feels over here" Gunjan thought as she relaxed herself on her comfortable couch enjoying the mesmerizing view of the scenic Canadian countryside from the window of her well-lit neatly kept room, relishing a mug of hot espresso coffee. There was no similar comfort in any corner of the world. Gunjan closed her eyes and tried to relax. But her mind was fully awake. Almost a dozen questions passed her mind as she desperately tried to take a nap...

"Where is my life leading me? Am I doomed to live like this forever?, alone...all by myself for the whole life? And even If there is someone made for me...am I really ready to take up the journey on my own part? Is my heart ready to love and feel again?...is it ready to make a completely fresh start after the last destruction it suffered!" the questions were intriguing as well as gruelling!

The next morning wasn't that bright. Though the sun came out and glimmered at its peaceful best but its scope remained limited to the outside world only. Inside, myriad embers of doubt each with its own smoke of query perplexed Gunjan's mind. The last night had not been easy. Sitting on her chair in the clinic, Gunjan switched the table lamp on and off as all the scenes from the last night flickered on her mind.

Her dad had entered her room with an unusual stress on his face. Without talking much, he just handed over the new patient's file to Gunjan. Slightly taken aback by her dad's strange behaviour as Gunjan opened the file, a wave of cold shiver gripped her heart. Her forehead began to sweat and all her emotional defences knelt down. The contents of the file zoomed in and out in front of Gunjan's eyes as her vision got blurred.

"Samrat Shergill" read the name of the patient!

...
