Chapter 32: Making Ends Meet
~Present~
The clock chimed twelve at midnight when the phone rang loudly in the hall, echoing in the empty Khurana mansion. Daadima groped for the phone in the dark while switching on the bedside lamp. She looked at the caller ID and a smile crept on her lips. She switched on the phone to be greeted by a familiar voice.
"Hello Daadima," the voice on the phone said.
"Haan bete, boliye," Daadima said holding the receiver.
"How are you Daadi?" he asked.
"Hum bilkul teekh hai, aur aap?" she asked smiling.
"You know me Daadi, always super!" he said haughtily.
"Haan, haan, kyun nahi, magar something tells me you are more than super. Kya hua bete?" she said knowing him too well.
"Daadi, you are too good!" he said surprised at her correct guess.
"Hmm so toh hoon," she said with a smile.
"Aakhir Daadi kiski," he said arrogantly.
"Bete," Daadi said feigning anger.
"Daadi," he said equally serious before both of them were bursting out laughing.
"I miss you Daadi," he said with a tinge of sadness.
"Me too."
He paused a few seconds before continuing, "Anyways Daadi, the reason I called was to tell you I got your message. Aap fikar mat keejiye, I have emailed you with the detailed plan and I am positive we can make the ends meet. I wont be able to tell you in detail now, because I gotta run, teekhai Daadi?"
"No problem bete, I'll see what else I can do. You carry on," she said calmly.
"Alright Daadi, take care, love you!"
"Bye bete, love you too!" she said, her mind relieved of all worries.

"Muruga unakku thunayum ullatho! (Muruga do you have company?)" Geet sighed loudly, looking at the paper strewn all over her desk. "Hmm unakku enna kanna kundarathile kumaranukku kondatam aana inge irupavarugalukellam thindatam! (Hmm! You are relaxed on the mountains but here we are all in trouble!)."
It had been more than five months since Geet got back on her schedule in Khurana Constructions. The routine was hectic and she had a lot of pending work to catch up on. Although Maan had relieved her of the secretary post, she still wanted to do it for him, adding to the additional list of to do things as a junior architect. Projects, blue prints, submissions had exponentially increased making her work unusual hours, yet she had enjoyed every bit of working with Maan. He had guided her and supported her well through her time in Khurana Constructions. Of course, they did have their daily dose of fighting and disagreeing but it ended by the end of the day. Their bond of friendship had steadily grown strong. There was not a day without him visiting her after work and spent some time with Anu, who had willingly stayed back a few months along with Arvind in Delhi.
Maan was all fun outside office but once he entered his cabin he was the usual angry young man again and nobody was an exception to his anger. Work was important for him and none could be excused from doing it. So Geet was stuck today, over time, trying to finish the blue prints for the presentation that was due tomorrow. The clock on the wall read 8:35PM and she still had a long way to go before she could pack up. She stretched her neck to see what he was doing and saw through the blinds he was busy studying a file. She blew a puff of hair away from her face and looked back at her work, "Hmm! Lucky fellow, once he drowns himself in work, khaane peene ki yaad hi nahi rehta hai. Magar mera peth aisa nahi hai," she said sadly and as if on cue her stomach grumbled, "haan baba main kya karoon yeh kaam puri nahi karti toh jellyfish chillayega," she said patting her stomach. She sighed reluctantly and got back to her work cursing the work at hand.
Geet was engrossed in her work when she heard a knock. She looked up to see a tall, well-built, handsome man stand by the doorway. He had a certain boyish charm on his face while his deep chocolate brown eyes resembled a very familiar pair. "May I come in?" he asked cheerfully. He wore a dazzling smile on his face that could have easily blown over women of any age. She wondered who could visit her at this time of the day and hesitantly asked him to enter. "Aap mujhe pehechanenge nahi magar main aapko zaroor jaanta hoon Ms Geet," he said flashing his perfect set of teeth. Geet still stood numb at the fact that an unknown stranger to her knew her name. He strode towards her, "Oh! My apologies I haven't introduced myself," he said apologetically, "hello, I am Vikrant Singh Khurana, Maan's chote bhai," he said extending his hands.
"No wonder he has the same set of deep brown eyes and the similar mannerisms," she wondered before extending her hands. Vikrant shook her hands warmly while she greeted him, "Hello Mr. Vikrant. By the way, I am curious to know how you know me," she said perplexed at his statement.
"Arre you don't have to be so formal, naam toh hai bada magar main hoon toh bahut chota so please call me'"
"Vicky?" Geet finished for him, smiling warmly at him.
"Wow you are one of a kind," he said surprised at the way she caught on.
"Why thank you," she said bowing down slightly. "But you still haven't answered my question."
"Haan, I am getting there. Well to tell you the truth our first meet, I wouldn't call it good for it wasn't under pleasant circumstances. You were injured and unconscious. Veerji was rushing you to the hospital while I drove the vehicle. I must say he was pretty shaken up to see you like that," he said somberly.
"I'm afraid I didn't know about you driving, else I would had come to personally thank you. Thank you so much," she said gratefully. "It was a sudden attack and I didn't have any clue after I fell unconscious. But if not for Maan and you I think I wouldn't have seen the next daylight."
"It's alright Geet, saving a damsel in distress mera farz banta hai," he said winking at her.
"Says the knight in shining armor," she said winking back.
"I must say I'm impressed with your choice of diction. I think I have met my match," he said genuinely impressed with her responses.
"I'm glad to have been of some help. By the way, what brings you here?"
"Jhoot bolun ya sach?" he asked.
"Jhoot hi bolo," she said playing along.
"I came to attend my computer class and on the way I thought I would visit veerji," he said grimly.
"Nice one, ab sach please!"
"My girlfriend was bugging me to see the latest new club, two blocks down the road," he said grinning cheekily.
"And?" she probed further.
"Let's say it just got too boring that I sneaked out leaving her," he said guiltily.
"What?" she asked shocked at his revelation.
"Hey don't judge me there!"
"I think there is nothing left to judge," she said looking at him accusingly.
"Bas, hota hai hota hai," he said carelessly.
"And what brings you here?" shaking her head at his nonchalant reply.
"I wanted to say hello to my Maan veerji, it's been long since I saw him. Seems he is busy all the time. I guess new friends make him forget his old family," he said sadly.
"I'm sorry Vicky for taking away your time from your brother," she said with concern.
"Arre, don't worry, main bas mazak kar raha tha. Its actually really nice that he is spending time in something other than his robotic work."
Geet noticed Maan walk into her cabin just as Vicky was talking to her. "Lo! Talk of the devil, the devil appears," she whispered causing Vicky to chuckle.
"Yeh kya ho raha hai?" Maan asked cocking his eyebrows while Vicky turned around to face him. "Arre Vicky tu?" he asked with surprise.
"Haan veerji," Vicky said walking up to Maan and giving him a quick hug. "Aap toh bahut busy ho, aur abhi naya dost vost mil gaya toh hum hi aapko milna chahiye varna aap hume bhool jayenge," he said winking at Geet.
"Aise koi baat nahi Vicky," Maan said seriously.
"Main toh sirf mazak kar raha tha veerji," Vicky said smiling.
"Aao, main officially mere khaas dost se milvata hoon," Maan said walking towards Geet.
"Khaas dost ka yaad jab aata hai tab aapko saare kaam se fursat milta hai," Geet said rolling her eyes. "Vicky tumhe pata hai main poore din office mein hi hoti hoon, magar janaab subah se chillate rehte hain," she said narrowing her eyes. "Geet! Yeh doh, voh doh, aise karo vaise karo," she said imitating Maan causing Vicky to burst out laughing.
"Geet!" Maan shouted.
"Exactly, aise hi," Geet said gleefully while Maan slapped his forehead in frustration.
