Chapter 25 - To Your Rescue

Maan took a deep breath & knocked on the door once.

The Handas were in the sitting area, perplexed with the situation they found themselves in.

Rajji held her head in her hands. She glanced up, looking around to see who would answer the door. When it appeared no one would, she got up & went towards the door. Pulling it open, her eyes widened in shock as she saw the person before her.

He was battered & bruised, his shirt torn, blood stains all over it.

Maan was relieved that Rajji had opened the door; had it been anyone else, the door probably would have been slammed on his face by now.

"What happened to you?!" Rajji whispered, looking horrified at Maan's state of appearance.

"I need to-"

"Rajji, who is it?" called Darjee.

"You'd better come in," Rajji said, & she stepped aside.

Maan stepped inside the house, to be met with 3 shocked faces looking at him.

Brij looked satisifed with the outcome of his beatings.

"What are you doing here?" Darjee demanded.

"And what on earth happened to you?" Tayyi-ji asked.

Maan looked at Brij with nothing but anger. "Ask your beloved son."

"Brij?"

"I beat him up," Brij replied coolly, shrugging his shoulders. "He was with Geet, I taught him a lesson. But it seems like he still hasn't learnt."

"A few punches won't keep me away from her. The only thing that ever could is death."

"Shall I help you with that?" Brij snarled.

"Ok, ok, that's enough," Darjee said, slamming his stick down on the floor. He turned to Maan. "You should leave."

"I want to see Geet."

"She's not available," Tayyi-ji replied.

Rajji looked at her father. They were both desperate to intervene, but it seemed like the rest of the family were keen to cover up Geet's illness.

"Not available?"

"She's getting married tomorrow," Darjee stated.

Maan clenched his fists together, his jaw tightening. "Over my dead body."

He bolted for the stairs. Brij rushed after him, grabbing his collar.

"Oi! Where do you think you're going?"

"I told you. To see Geet."

"She's about to become a married woman tomorrow. Don't you have any shame?"

Geet willed herself to stay still, so she could hear properly.

She was sure she could hear Maan's voice. She would recognise that voice anywhere.

But how did he get here?

She wondered if it was just a figment of her imagination.

Geet wished she could get up & see for herself, but her fever was so high even moving her arm up & down was painful.

"Babaji, please help me," she whispered, praying for a miracle.

Rajji couldn't keep the silence anymore. She had had enough of standing back and watching her family torture Geet.

"Geet's really ill," she blurted out.

Maan turned to look at her, his collar still gripped by Brij who gave Rajji a deathly glare.

"What?!" Maan asked, becoming worried.

"Don't you dare speak," Brij warned.

Rajji ignored her brother & continued. "She-she has a really high fever, she's bedridden. She needs you."

"Rajji!" Darjee bellowed. "Enough is enough. Don't say another word. Brij, kick him out."

"My pleasure," he replied, turning back to look at Maan before dragging him by his collar.

But Maan's reflexes were quick, and he kicked Brij just behind his leg, causing him to stumble back slightly. He delivered a sharp punch to his jaw, & Brij let go of his grip on Maan. Taking the opportunity, he bolted up the stairs, only to be faced with a corridor full of rooms.

"GEET!" he called.

Geet gasped. Maan was here.

She winced & groaned as she forced herself to sit up.

Maan could hear the many footsteps approaching the stairs. He had to find Geet's room, & fast.

He opened all the doors frantically, his heart hammering in his chest. He came to a stop when he saw a room at the far end of the corridor, the door firmly shut.

Geet had to be in there.

He ran to the door, stopping just outside of it.

"Don't even think about it."

Maan turned to see Darjee & Uncle stood at the end of the corridor. Uncle-ji, who was stood behind him was gesturing for him to go inside.

"Try & stop me," he replied, and shoved the door open.

He glanced around, then his eyes stopped at Geet.

She looked like she hadn't eaten in months. She was extremely pale, she looked weak & fragile.

He was horrified at how ill she had suddenly become, tears forming in his eyes.

Geet's heart swelled. He was finally here, & he was in one piece.

Maan rushed over to Geet's bedside, stopping at her right side.

She forced herself to give him a small smile. But then the tears spilled over, & she began crying.

He fell to his knees, taking her hand in his.

"Please, don't cry Geet," he said. He couldn't bear to see her tears.

"GEET!"

Geet looked up to see a furious Darjee stood in the doorway, glaring at her. Terrified at what he would do next, Geet flung herself into Maan, resting her head against his chest as she clutched his shirt tightly, her eyes squeezed shut in fear.

Maan was surprised with Geet's sudden movement, but he folded his arms around her, protecting her in his embrace. He looked at Darjee slowly, feeling disgusted at the man who was responsible for Geet's pain.

"If anything happens to her, no one will be to blame but yourselves," he threatened through gritted teeth.

Precap: None! Before you all get mad at me for another short update, the next chapter is the last one & it will be fairly long.

So I had to make this a short one for it to lead up to the climax.

Fozia 🤗...thank u for the update and PM...so glad Maaneet are together again...sad this story is ending...but happy Geet's pain will end too...that is what i am thinking from your title...hope i am right...after all they have been thru plz give Maaneet a new and happy life together...plz continue...TC 😊
