The urban film aimed at multiplexes in metros and mini metros has found the going tough over the last few years to put up big numbers at the box office but Delhi Belly managed it after a long time. Before that it was Love Aaj Kal so now the success of Delhi belly offers some hope to Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara as it is aiming for the same audience and similar business if not more.

The problem with this type of film aimed at the urban youth is that it has not shown any growth at the box office since 2007 while the business of mass films has grown by leaps and bounds which means it will be tough for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara to get to 60 crore nett while 70 crore nett has never been touched by a film aimed at urban audience in metros and mini metros.

In 2007 an urban film like Chak De India grossed 87.50 crore and even today thats about as high as an urban film can go while the mass film in 2007 like Om Shanti Om did 110.50 crore and a similar success today like Ready hits 160 crore.

This is because that the multiplex growth over last few years has come outside urban centres while single screens exhibitors have revamped and refurbished their theatres to compete with the multiplexes. So basically the growth in business in last 4-5 years has come where there is little demand for movies with urban sensibilities.

Below is a look at the big grossing urban films and mass films over last five years. Gross figures (not Nett) are taken here for comparison as some films were entertainment tax free.

Urban

Chak De India (2007) - 87.50 crore

Taare Zameen Par (2007)- 75.50 crore

Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na (2008) - 77.50 crore

Love Aaj Kal (2009) - 89 crore

I Hate Luv Storys (2010) - 58.75 crore

Anjaana Anjaani (2010) - 53.50 crore

Delhi Belly (2011) - 82 crore (Expected)

Mass

Om Shanti Om (2007)- 110.50 crore

Welcome (2007)- 98 crore

Ghajini (2008)- 155 crore

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008)- 117 crore

Three Idiots (2009) - 269.50 crore

Dabangg (2010) - 187.50 crore

Golmaal 3 (2010) - 144 crore

Ready (2011) - 160 crore (Expected)

It can be seen that business of the successful urban films in 2011 is roughly where it was in 2007 while business of mass films has jumped around 50% at least and can go on to do much bigger numbers today as compared to 2007.
