The Gift of the Magi: It is a short story written by O. Henry about a young married couple and how they deal with the challenge of buying secret Christmas gifts for each other with very little money.
Young married couple Della and Jim are very much in love with each other but can barely afford their one-room apartment due to their very bad economic situation. For Christmas, Della decides to buy Jim a chain for his prized pocket watch given to him by his father's father. To raise the funds, she has her long, beautiful hair cut off and sold to make a wig. Meanwhile, Jim decides to sell his watch to buy Della a beautiful set of combs made out of tortoiseshell and jewels for her lovely, knee-length brown hair. Although each is disappointed to find the gift they chose rendered useless, each is pleased with the gift that they received, because it represents their love for one another.
Relation to CB: Radhika and Dev are young, naive innocent couple, so much in love with each other. Each go to great extent to take care of other's comfort and well-being. Radhika tries to feed Dev food by telling him that she has already eaten. While Dev easily understands her predicament and explains her gently that every happiness and every hardship of their life, they will face together and feeds her food. Next day, he realizes that he has run out of money, without which they will again have no food. More than self, he is worried for his Radhika. He even goes to extent of risking his wound (blood mark is still clearly visible on his shoulder when he is cutting the wood). While Dev is away, Radhika is waiting anxiously for his return. She is totally lost in her thoughts, of how much hard work he must be doing and how hungry he would be on his return. The wife in her has become so restless and anxious that he would be tired and hence she has gone out that late in order to get food for him. Each is thinking about the other, each is worried about the other.
Radhika will do some hard work, may be some house hold chore in order to get food for Dev. Upon his return, Dev does not find Radhika and is restless but Radhika will return back after working to get food for her Dev.
Their extent of love and selflessness reminded me of this story of Gift of Magi, hence thought of sharing with you all.
