Chapter 74

"Dadi, Dadi," called Naintara, as she rushed into Dadi's room, "Maan veerji and Geet just pulled into the driveway."
"So the two escaped love birds finally decided to come home, did they?" A very calculating smile began to form on Dadi's face as she thought about the coming confrontation. "I'm so glad you overheard Dev talking to Maan on the phone this morning. Knowing the truth will make it that much more fun, of course, we can't let them know we found out what they were up to. If either you or I give anything away, Maan is sure to catch on, which won't bode well for our fun."
"Dadi, don't you think that we've teased Veerji and Geet enough?"
"Of course not. What is a wedding without fun? Anyway, you and Dev deprived me by eloping, so now I have to make up for it with Maan and Geet. Besides, it's not all about teasing. If Maan had his way, he and Geet would spend all their time with each other. How will the wedding arrangements get finished, if I can never get Geet's imput?"
"I guess you're right, Dadi."
"Of course I'm right. Well, Naintara, let's go and meet them."
"Yes, Dadi," said Naintara, a smile forming on her own face as she thought about how Maan and Geet will try to save themselves now.

"GT, GT! You're home!" JD came running down the stairs, flinging himself into Geet's arms as soon as he got near enough.
"GT, I wanted to tell you about my Eco Explorers, but you weren't here when I got home. GT, why weren't you here?" Geet looked at Maan, confused about how to answer the little boy.
"I'd like to know the answer to that question too," said Dadi, walking slowly down the stairs and giving both Maan and Geet very stern looks.
"Well?" she questioned after a few moments of silence, where Geet and Maan silently communicated, each hoping the other would be able to come up with some explanation to calm Dadi down.
When no response was forthcoming, Dadi crossed her arms, saying, "JD, I want to speak with GT and Uncle. Why don't you go find Harsh and Stella and play in the backyard for awhile. You can tell GT all about the zoo later."
"Okay, Dadi. Harsh! Harsh! Stella!" JD ran off in search of his two playmates, leaving his GT to her fate.

"I can't even begin to explain how disappointed I am in you two. No, don't interrupt me. I don't want to listen to any excuses. In case you have forgotten, I promised that I would send Geet out of the mansion if you didn't follow my orders."
"Dadi, no..."
"Now, Dadi, I won't have you..."
"Quiet!" Maan and Geet were shocked into silence by Dadi's angry response. She looked at both the young people, as if she couldn't decide who to be more upset with.
"You don't want Geet to leave, do you?" The question was directed at Maan, but both Maan and Geet answered in the negative. "Well, it's clear that I can't trust you two together. So, my condition for her staying here, is that until the wedding, you two are not allowed to be alone any more. If you both don't agree, then I will take Geet to a hotel, and you two won't even see each other until the sangeet. I'm very serious about this. I have no qualms in carrying out my threat. So, do you both agree, or not?"
Geet could see that Maan was ready to explode, so she thought it best to agree to Dadi's demand before things got out of hand. Though Maan continued to give a convincing imitation of a wounded bear, Dadi paid him no heed. Instead, she took Geet by the hand, and marched her right out of the drawing room, and away to get back to wedding preparations. Maan was left to glare angrily at the only other person there.
"Don't look at me like that, Veerji. I did my best to get some time alone with Geet, but you went and ruined it. If you wanted to take Geet out for a date, why didn't you ask Dadi. Instead you went who knows where, doing who knows what, and all it got you was a Hitler Dadi. Now you have to live with the consequences."
Naintara left, conscious that Maan had trained his angry glare on her retreating back. She quickly walked down the hall, trying to put as much distance between her and her irate brother-in-law. As soon as she thought it was safe, she let her laughter go. Oh, it had been so funny to see Dadi dress down Maan like he was a naughty school boy. Now they will see how Maan Singh Khurana tries to romance his future wife, with Dadi always by her side.

"Geet, why did you agree to Dadi's stupid demand?" If Maan's tone wasn't enough to let Geet know how upset he was, the angry glare he was giving her through Facetime was enough to confirm.
"Maan, what was I supposed to do? Dadi was going to make me stay in a hotel!"
"Well, now what are we going to do? Dadi doesn't intend to live you alone. How will we spend any time together. I mean, look at tonight. She didn't even let you go until a few minutes ago."
"Maan, I don't know what to tell you. I think we're just going to have to do what Dadi says. It's just for two weeks."
"Geet, I can hardly go two hours without seeing you. How do you expect me to last two weeks without being alone with you? It's impossible."

As Geet entered the kitchen she couldn't help but yawn. It didn't escape her tired mind that when she used to live in Austin, she was up this early every morning except Sunday. Upon moving into the mansion, no longer needed to make the commute to work each day had allowed her to sleep in, yet once again she was back to the early wake up time.
The reason for her schedule change walked in a minute later, coming up behind and giving her a big hug. "I've missed having you in my arms," said Maan lazily, nuzzling her hair, before turning her around for a kiss.
Geet kissed him back, but then turned serious. "Don't get out of control, Mr. Khurana. You know we have a specific agenda. If you waste too much time, we might end up getting caught, and then who knows what will happen."
"Geet, just let me have a few minutes with my Mishti, please. We have time."
"Don't be clever. I remember what happened the last time you said that. We ended up in the spot we're in know because of you and your 'time'. Now, we have to make sure we aren't see leaving together. You go on, and I'll go get Stella. We'll meet you at the corner of Essex and Melrose."
"Geet, just give me one more kiss, please."
Geet couldn't resist Maan's pleading, but at the same time, she did not want to get distracted. She gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and then pushed him away. She reminded Maan that the longer he delayed, the less time they would have together, and the greater chance that Dadi would catch them. Maan finally left, not wanting to jeopardize their time together, and Geet left to get Stella. The dog was already awake and waiting, when Geet came to attach her leash.
"Alright, girl, are you ready? We're going to go for a walk with Maan. Won't that be fun?"

Her plan to take an early morning dog walk with Maan having worked, Geet was humming softly to herself as she made her way down the hall. Though the early morning weather had been lovely and cool, she had still managed to break a sweat, as she and Maan had run occasionally with Stella. Before making breakfast, Geet wanted to take a quick shower, so she made her way to the main staircase.
Just as she put her foot on the first step, a voice caught her attention. The voice was coming from the drawing room, and sounded quite agitated. Geet couldn't help but make her way to the door to find out what was going on.
"Annie, there's no point in you calling me. I know what you want, but I can't do it. I've said no to Arjun, and I'm saying no to you. I'm too busy with the wedding. If he keeps pressing the issue, then I'm not going to see her at all. Ever! Please tell him to drop it." When Naintara ended the call with her sister-in-law, she turned around to see her soon to be sister-in-law looking at her with concern.
"Di, is everything alright?" asked Geet, the worry evident in her tone of voice.
"Of course. Everything is fine." Not wanting to answer Geet's questions, Naintara asked one of her own. "What have you been doing, Geet?"
"I just took Stella for a walk. Di..."
"I need to check and see if the baby is awake. I'll see you at breakfast."

Geet punched in the phone number she had gotten from Dev the day before and waited for the call to be picked up. As she waited, she hoped she was doing the right thing. She didn't know what would happen, she just knew that Di needed her help, and this was probably the only way to do so.
"Hello?"
"Is this Mrs. Annie Rathore?"
"Yes, who it this?"
"I'm Geet Handa. Naintara Khurana's friend."
"Oh, yes, I know who you are. Why are you calling me? What do you want?"
