Fame-hungry children driving India's reality TV boom

MUMBAI - IT IS 5 pm and Rima Chakravorty has not eaten her lunch. Dressed in a shiny pink and green dress with gauze and sequins, her face heavy with make-up, the 14 year-old sidles up to her father and complains that she is hungry and feeling feverish.

Rima has just finished a gruelling shoot for an Indian song-based reality TV show, and will soon change her outfit to sing again in front of a panel of judges and a studio audience during filming that will last for five to six hours.

Urged on by her father, Rima is one of the many child stars fuelling India's reality TV boom, from singing shows to dancing competitions and even comedy shows for kids, all aired on prime-time TV to eager audiences that are lapping it up.

'Kids reality shows are one of our most successful formats,' says Ashish Golwalkar of Zee TV, one of India's top channels.

'In middle-class India, kids are the ones driving most family decisions, and they are the ones ensuring that the whole family comes together and watches these shows.'

Riding a Western-led shift towards reality TV and reflecting social changes in India's booming economy, the popular format provides a break from the regular diet of family melodrama and scheming in-laws that is the staple of Indian daily television. -- REUTERS

I dun think it is good either, Sir.

Reality shows dun seem to fit their formats, in the first place. The whole fundamental of TRP is running half the economy, after of course marriages. And TRP institution develops the whole reality in these shows, nauseating.

There is indeed a hell lot of talent out there, but these shows subject a great deal of burden on the younger brigade. Parents are forceful too, their endeavor of 'baby, show Uncle your painting and then dance' never seems to even adjourn, sometimes. Academically or otherwise.

As for kids being fame hungry, it is circumstantial and depends on how they are raised, mainly.

I agree and there should be some laws to protect them. Imagine 8 year olds being placed in pressure cooker becoz of greed. Some parents are too much, they are terrorists.

I was going to open a similar topic on kids in entertainment industry and the roles they are playing .
I so agree with your point as well, some kids are getting really thristy for fame which is not good for their own development. even if not for fame, working so much when so young will surely drive them to resentment and exhaustion in life sooner.
I also wanted to point out that kids who are playing roles in tv shows are being given dialouges that are way above their age and innocense. what will the kids working in balika vadhu think about life and marriage , a little kid as young as 6 yrs is made to give love advise, a 2nd or 3rd grade kid in criminal minds was asked to hold a gun and shot at the cop and was made to act in a scene surrounded by cops criminal and a woman tied up, what effect will that picture has on the little kid's mind. that is just one scene, there are whole episodes and shows with kids doing and saying things that are not appropriate.
I worry how they turn out to be, will all this showbiz not have effect on there growing minds, be it reality show or a fiction they are subjected to exploitation. they should regulate these things, and parents they are also to be blamed big time.

I don't think its the "Kids" who are fame hungry. A 5 yr old who might not even know how to spell "famous" and "reality" is nowadays subjected to be a part of shows which are ironically called "reality" shows. It used to be the innocent "show and tell" in school, where kids were "encouraged" to showcase their skills in areas other than academics. Nowadays, this little act of innocence has been converted to a money making trade where grown-ups cash on the little minds. A 14 yr old Rima should be hanging out with her gang of girls in the cafe beside her school, not shooting hungry in the studio till 5 pm. The blame goes totally to the parents. They are the ones who subject their children to this mental torture. Everybody wants 15 minutes to fame, but nobody thinks what the child has to deal with to fetch it for them. They are the ones who teach the child the meaning of "being famous" but they do not care that the meaning of "childhood" is lost in this game of money.

Ah yes there are and they do a pretty good job surprisingly. Since kids are getting smarter early these days I wonder if the education period will be shortened in future. Or perhaps more time dedicated to getting practical experience.

Cookery shows for children!
Even baby-recite-a-poem-to-uncle kind of parents wouldn't want to send their kids for cooking up their fingers and hair on TV.

How is this doing well?
Besides, this type of reality has no possible and comprehensive 'message' the makers guarantee!

There are certain programmes I do not watch like models, cooking, fashion, weight loss etc
Since cooking is always so common I guess it must be popular.
But not my cup if tea.

Yes very good point that character is molded by the role we play. Kids are very impressionable and accept things at face value.
Kids should also not be watching crime, horror n violence on TV.
