Chapter 63
May 29, 2011 11:20 am
Naintara stood outside of the door of the room where her mother was sitting, a prisoner due to her unfathomable actions. Just thinking about the facts she had been informed of by the police only minutes ago, made her shudder. She couldn't believe that her mother was capable of doing these things. Now that she was there, she wasn't even sure she had the courage to speak with her mother. But she had to, otherwise the questions in her mind would haunt her the rest of her life.
Maan and Geet stood with the police outside of the room. They watched the entire exchange between mother and daughter through a two-way mirror. Geet and Maan ended up translating for the others as the two women spoke Hindi to each other.
"Mother, I've come to talk to you."
"Naintara, my baby? You are here?"
"Yes, mother."
"How are my sweet little pota and poti doing?"
"Mother, stop your fake show of caring! I'm in no mood for your drama. I want you to clearly tell me why you tried to murder my nephew and best friend."
Armita Rathore looked around suspisciously, as if she expected someone else to be in the room, trying to listen to their conversation.
"Naintara, I don't know whay these people told you, but it's all lies. Don't believe any of it. They're just trying to turn you against us. You know, I always have done everything that I can to see you happy."
"See me happy? You expect me to be happy when I see those photos you had taken of JD like some kind of stalker? You expect me to be happy to see that you stole Geet's bracelet and kept it displayed like some sort of trophy? You expect me to be happy that you lied to me about visiting the family in Bihar, and used a fake passport to travel to Chicago? YOU EXPECT ME TO BE HAPPY THAT YOU CONFESSED TO HAVING VICKY AND MEERA KILLED?"
"Now, sweetheart, that is no way to talk to your mother! Just calm down and let me explain to you. When you hear my explanation, you won't be mad at us any more, you will understand that we did it for you."
"Mother, what are you talking about? What us?"
"Your father and I, of course."
"Mom, Daddy has been dead for four years, and I don't appreciate you trying to bring him into all of this."
"Naintara, don't joke about such a thing. Your father is right here, supporting me."
"Mother, I saw Dev and Arjun light his funeral pyre. You were there yourself, so just stop all this nonsense about Daddy."
"Naintara, never say such a horrible thing about your father!"
"Armita, calm down."
"Calm down! Nayan, I won't calm down. How dare your own daughter speak about your death. Don't I do all the poojas for your long life?"
"She's just in a little shock, but if you stay calm, you can make her understand what we were trying to do."
"You're right, Nayan."
"Of course I'm right, my life, I always am."
"Oh Nayan, stop. You always try to make me blush in front of our daughter."
Naintara looked at her mother like she was possessed, and maybe she was. Right before her eyes, her mother had a conversation with herself, half of it sounded just the way her father would speak. Her father that was dead!
"You're crazy!"
"Now, Naintara, that's not a nice thing to say. Doing things for you and your children, so you can have everything you deserve, is not crazy."
"Everything I deserve?"
"You want to know why I kept the bracelet? Because the money that he spent on that wh**e is rightfully yours. You are the Khurana daughter-in-law, not her, not that other one. Only you!"
"I'm not going to listen to any more of this," said Naintara in English. "I want to leave, right now!"
"Naintara, we did it for you, for your rights!" Naintara wouldn't look at her mother, instead, standing at the door, waiting for them to unlock it and let her out.
As she exited the room, her mother tried to rush after her, but was restrained by the officers. "Naintara, your father promised me that you would have the Khurana wealth! HE PROMISED!"
Naintara didn't look back as she rushed away, tears streaming down her face.
June 25, 2003 10:50 am
"Hello, Nakul, I'm here to see my daughter."
"Yes, Mr. Rathore, she's waiting for you in the drawing room."
Nayan Rathore followed the Khurana's long time servant through the hallway and to the room where his daughter was waiting. The expression of worry on her face made her look a lot older than her eighteen years. The small mark of red at the middle of her hairline also added to the affect. He couldn't believe that his little Tara was now suddenly so grown up, even with the evidence right before his eyes.
"Tara," he called out softly. As soon as she saw him, he held out his arms to her.
Naintara rushed over to her father and hugged him with all her might. Tears started spilling out of her eyes. She tried to speak, but found the words wouldn't come out so easily.
Finally she asked, "Daddy, are you mad at me?"
"No, Tara. Disappointed, but not mad."
"I'm sorry, Daddy, but Dev and I love each other. We don't want to be apart, and if I went back to India with you, we wouldn't be able to marry for at least three years. Dev was even afraid that my marriage might get fixed with someone else."
"I understand all that, and I forgive you. Your mother, on the other hand..."
Naintara made a face, before asking, "Is she very angry?"
"Very. She wanted me to have the marriage anulled."
"No, Daddy, you can't. I love Dev. I'll never leave him!"
"Don't worry, Tara, I finally convinced her to give her blessing."
Naintara, knowing her mother well, found that shocking. "How did you do that? I thought it would take years!"
"I reminded her that Dev was a Khurana, and even if he didn't have much of his own right now, he was an heir to one of the fastest expanding import businesses in Chicago. Realizing that he would someday own a part of a multi-million dollar business seemed to smooth her ruffled feathers quite a lot."
"Daddy," replied Naintara with a cute little pout, "you know I didn't marry Dev for money. I don't like it that you used his family wealth to convince Maa. I hate how elitist she is."
"Tara, I know your mother's preocupation with money bothers you, but there's something that you don't know about her. When she was a child in Bihar, her family lost almost everything they had. They went through one very difficult year of poverty and near starvation. You and I both know that money isn't the most important thing in the world, but then we've never had to be without it. For someone in your mother's position, whose had to do without it at such a young age, it is difficult to every really feel finacially secure again."
"But Daddy, I don't want her to approve of Dev because of money. I want her to accept him for who he is."
"Don't worry, this is only temporary so that she will calm down. We'll both keep working on her until she can fully accept Dev as her son-in-law for the right reasons. Now, I'd like to have a little chat with said son-in-law. It's not going to be so easy for him to take my little girl away from me."
"Daddy!"

Chapter 64
May 29, 2011 12:10 pm
"I can't get my head around it. Did Maa actually say that she did all this because of the family money? We already received three million dollars as our share of Dadaji's company. That's hardly nothing, and they way she kept talking was crazy. She is crazy, isn't she?"
That last question was directed at the police officer sitting in front of her. "Ma'am, that's a determination for a court pyschologist to make. We're just trying to piece together all the facts. Now, we've been able to trace her movements the last few months fairly easily, now that we know what to look for. Her involvement in the deaths of your brother and sister in law are another matter. We're trying to coordinate with the police in Texas, but it would be very helpful if you could answer some questions for us."
"What kind of questions?"
"We need to know about her life leading up the time of the accident. We want to know as much as possible about her movements and state of mind at that time."
"I'll do my best."
May 29, 2011 9:20 pm
"Oh, Geet, if only Daddy were still alive. It makes me sick that she's using him as an excuse for everything she's done. He was such a lovely man, he was actually so understanding about our elopement. I never dreamed that Maa would take such a crazy idea into her head, just because Daddy pointed out that Dev was a part of a wealthy family. I mean, I knew she was upset that we put the money from our share of the business into accounts for the children, instead of spending it, but to actually resort to murdering my family for money? That's something I'll never be able to forgive." Naintara spoke all of this as she absently nursed the cup of tea she was holding.
Geet came and sat on the couch beside her and put a hand comfortingly on her shoulder. "Di, she clearly has some sort of mental condition that's behind this behavior."
"I don't care. If she really cared about me, then she would know that no amount of money would ever be able to compensate for the deaths, no murders, of my devar and devrani, let alone you and JD."
"Di, I realize how upset this has made you, but she is still your mother and she needs your help." Naintara looked Geet like she was crazy, but Geet persevered. "Since tomorrow is Memorial Day, her arraignment will be held on Tuesday and she hasn't requested a lawyer. Now, the court can appoint one, but it will be much better for her if you get her a lawyer."
"Geet, what are you saying?"
"Di, you know how the legal system works here. Everyone is entitled to a fair trial, even your mother. She doesn't seem to have the ability to look out for her interests, so you have to."
"Geet, I can't do that. I can't even stand the thought of seeing her again, and you want me to get her a lawyer? There is just no way."
"That is why I think you should contact Arjun and ask him to come here to help."
"Arjun? No, I can't do that. Annie's expecting. I can't ask him to leave her now. Anyway, Maa won't want anything to do with him."
"It doesn't matter what she wants, it's what she needs that is important. Your mother needs someone related who can look out for her interests. Maan and I, Dadi, even you and Dev, are too involved in the situation to do that. But Arjun doesn't know anything about it. He's never even met me or JD, so he won't have any personal biases."
Naintara tried to shake her head, but Geet was insistant. "It's too late to call now with the time difference between here and London, but first thing in the morning I want you to phone him. Even if he tells you he can't come, at least you'll still have his support. Now, I don't want to hear any more arguments. You've had a very long and trying few days. You should get some rest."
