I might be the only one with such strong opposing views and attitude towards what is being depicted nowadays, but thought i'd bring it to attention here anyway, to get a general idea of people's viewpoints on this topic.

So the contention for this topic is related to the TV programmes and advertisements being shown on Indian television. I know that India prides itself in becoming more and more westernised with its thought and actions, however is it really necessary to degrade itself like this? The explicit content or the sexual innuendos that are shown on television, whether it's the flavoured condoms ads on Zoom, or the girls grinding up to Neil Nitin Mukesh talking about having a threesome, is downright disgusting and kinda uncomfortable.
If it was a hint of a sexual joke, then sure, it'll be fun to laugh at. But, the fact that they literally show a girl so desperate to have sex, is kinda...offensive to girls? Because the feminist side of me perceives it to be that, the guy has all the power, and the girls can't help but come to him.

A funny advertisement which obviously has a sexual joke hidden in it, but the kids won't understand? I'll give you an example.
This ad here was shown in Australia, I think, a year ago. A guy goes to the supermarket, because his girlfriend has requested him to quickly get tampons for her. Anyway, so he reaches there and there are all these different kind of sizes for the tampons presented. He looks at the 'extra small', 'small' and then the 'extra large'. Looks down at his pants, smirks and picks up the 'extra large'.
A kid probably wouldn't have understood the joke. A person who obviously gets the innuendo, would have laughed at it.
See how this ad is not in your face, shouting "take me, have sex with me?"

I am finding it more and more awkward now to watch any sort of MTV or Zoom with my parents around in case suddenly an ad for a flavoured condom pops up, or an ad with Neil Nitin Mukesh comes up. I know that it's nothing wrong to be showing these things, but really, even here in Australia, you have most "adult"/sexual innuendo ads come after 9 pm when the kids are put down to sleep, but on the Indian channels, the ads are shown at any time starting from 7 pm till late.

First it was just MTV, with its abusive language, yet alright and funny to watch. Suddenly all these other shows started coming up like splitsvilla, crunch etc etc. And then almost every other song, and movie has one odd scene in which the guy and the girl get kinda down and heavy with each other.

I miss those days in which the scenes were just hinted, where the chemistry was built, and the rest was left to imagination. I am not talking about the times when they showed kisses through flowers, but I am talking about the innocence that used to be there.

Anyway, this strong reaction to the media was brought out of me when i saw the latest ad on MTV, for their new show, 'Grind'. I don't know about you guys, but looking at all those girls, wearing mini skirts, bikini-like tops, grinding to music ad passing seductive glances at the screen, brought just one word to my mind. Disgusting.

Granted that the majority of the audience watching the show is going to be males, highly enjoying the girls grinding to the music, which once again completely baffles me, how the girls on that show are willing to let random strangers get turned on by watching such stuff?

I don't know about you guys, but seductive dancing, and throwing yourself has a very thin line, and this show, for me, has crossed that line.

Anyway, that's the end of that rant. Looking forward to a nice debate about this coming forth. And a good debate means no personal attacks or abuses :)

I don't watch MTV or Zoom. Infact I don't watch TV all that much, so I may not be very knowledgeable about all that is being shown on Indian television. However, there are a few ads, especially some deodorant ads which seems to me like they are trying to sell through titillation. Whether it's right or wrong, I'm not sure. But yes, if the ads are shown during prime time then it can be awkward for those parents who are watching TV along with their kids.

Some out of context question to the topic maker since you reside in Australia. Is it common in Australia to show R rated movies in airports? A few days ago (this May) when I was there, in Uluru airport an R rated movie (Japanese Story) was being shown. And our flight was at around 2 pm, so it was not as if it was late at night or something.

No, it's not common at all. In fact that's very strange :S Ulluru, that's in the Northern Territory, yeah? Unfortunately, I have never been there so I wouldn't know. It's mainly the Queensland, NSW and Victoria regions that are more metropolitan, and that I've visited, and have never come across this.

In case it was the SBS channel, which is mostly there fore foreign films, documentaries, and aims towards a more adult audience in general, then it would make more sense. it would make even more sense if it was a TV which you could change the channel of manually.
However if it wasn't the SBS or a TV you could change the channels of, then I would be disgusted as well, because kids can be exposed to all sorts of scenes.

Well, in all I visited 4 places over there, Melbourne, Sydney, Uluru and Cairns. Came across such an incident only in Uluru. Though in other cities, I didn't pay much attention to what they are showing on the airport television.
I don't know in this particular case, whether the channels of that TV could've been set manually or not. The TV was hanging from the ceiling as far as I remember. Can't remember the channel on which the movie was on. But it was a strange situation for me. My mom, sis and BIL were seated opposite to me. Thankfully they were facing away from the TV, else it would've been really awkward.

Normally, in the airports, i haven't come across such a situation ever. However, having said that there are certain radio channels here in Melbourne that broadcast "Enlargement" of a certain male something at the oddest of times. Sometimes in the afternoons as well, and that leads to some awkward car rides.

But that's the only case of awkward advertising at prime time that I can remember. However looking at some tv shows and ads in India, I am shocked and disgusted

Most Aussie jokes are quite weird 😆
But yes those with sex content and foul language should not be shown. Some of these ads are really too much.

Hahaha I agree. Took me years till I started getting the hang of most of them, but every now and then my aussie friends drop a joke or a slang here and there, and i find myself lost all over again :p

Yeah, the ads are starting to get a bit too much.

I'm not too bothered by it. There is no harm in innuendo or mature content in programming aimed for youth and older people. Channels like MTV were created for more risque programming, there is always alternate programming. Although, I'd give Indians the right to lament as their choice in television is often limited with not much diverse programming.

But yes I will agree that prime time universal program should minimize the level of titillation. Condom ads, or mature ads should be limited to late night or on mature channels - not prime time.

Culture matters too. I'm not aware of Australian culture. However, a lot of European advertisements would make even us Americans squirm at their bold content. The critically acclaimed German film Goodbye Lenin has full frontal male nudity, something that even US censors would not pass for an R film. I used to the Hebrew culture was conservative at a point of time, but have found that Israeli films are also quite graphic in terms of sex and nudity.
