When people follow culture and tradition blindly, they tend to get retarded and become a cause of pain and frustration to people around them. This is the sad story of a woman called Minoo Tai and her moron son, Abhi.
The family of the Patwardans, is going through a traumatic phase, on the arrival of the elder sister of Vibha. Hints have been given, and an explanation for her behavior have been offered, by the well meaning relatives of the lady, that because she had to bring a son from the age of 3, without her husband around, she has turned into a rigid specimen of an antiquated society, while her sister has bloomed with a kind husband and loving children. Minoo Tai has brought up a son, with a double face, one trying to hoodwink a doting mother, and the other smiling face, to those from whom he has to gain something. In all this mess, lands a girl like Naina, whose past has molded her present, and being rudderless, she is drifting with the current. On one side, her innate instinct makes her express her love and appreciation, on the other, now she is obliged to limit it, to the restrictions imposed by the pseudo society values.
The opening scene is at the dining table, as Naina is serving the family, and Vibha praising her and telling her sister, that eventually, she will learn everything from her. Daksh adds his approval of Naina, but what his aunt may be thinking is anyone's guess, after what she saw of him and Naina. Daksh wants to know from her mother, where her daughter, Akruti is. She tells him, that she is not feeling well, and Minoo gives her advise to feed her well. Naina asks Abhi what she could serve him, and he holds her hand which she tries to get rid of. Actually he hurts her burnt hand. He is unaware of her pain, but Daksh watches him, with disgust, and the mother with caution.
At the dining table, Naina is in a role of a forced servant, a practice run, of an indigenous "bhahu", serves meals to the residents, and has to hear the taunts of her sister in law Rohini. Adding to the insult, is the mother, of Abhi, finding fault with the curds. When her son praises her cooking, she admonishes him, that in spite of being a chef, he does not know the difference, and that he should not give her false hopes, and should correct her. Rohini has a smile on her face, as Minoo Tai finds fault with Naina. What more can we expect from her? Already, Naina if she has any sense, should know what her life is to be under the roof of Minoo Tai. If she gave up her own home in Sikkim, to find a better future in search of love, is she going to jump from this frying pan into fire?
Rohini is a snake in the grass. She tries to extract a car from the in laws, when she finds out that her husband had to walk home from the station. When she suggests to him to buy a car, he tells her that he can take a loan only for a motor bike. She tells him, to leave the negotiation to her. She has been waiting for her tea, and rings the bell, and Sanket does not like her to trouble his mother, and then she tells him, that Minoo Tai has changed the rules, and now on, Naina will be serving her. In the meantime, Naina comes with a tray of tea, and tells Sanket she saw him, and prepared tea for him too. Naina lost one trump card. .
Akruti is also a victim, of her upbringing, with an insensitive father.She. in search of love, has landed into trouble, and is unwilling to confide in anyone. She is burning up within herself, not knowing what her future is going to be. Daksh on hearing that she is not feeling well goes to her room to see her and tries to help, but she distances herself from help.
As Daksh comes out of Akruti's room, he dashes Naina who is drawn to him who is very considerate to her, so much so, that he can see the smallest of sufferings of his best friend Naina, and is anxious to know how she is feeling with the burnt hand, while she wants to hide her feelings from him. Daksh has been observing the behavior of his aunt, and asks her how she takes it. She says that it is o.k. When he asks if she does not feel bad, she tells him about her search for love, from childhood. She tells Daksh that all her life she has been in search of some one who could love her, and now that she has found Abhi, she has to adjust to his needs, even though it is alien to her character. As he is leaving, she holds his hand and tells him not to worry, and the aunt sees them and warns her to respect her brother in law. The relationship has changed now, from friendship to a more serious relationship which needs respect and distance. Every time, she walks around Minoo sees insecurity, as Naina can not give up her friendship with her nephew Daksh. Naina tries to explain to the mother, that Daksh was her best friend before she met Abhi. Even though Naina knows that she does not love Abhi, she feels that it is a way to get on with life. Her suspicious mother in law, implants her cultural bias, and tells her that a woman should care for her brother in law, and not vice-versa. She finds it strange logic. But she is a "yes maushi" girl. Even though she finds this oppressing environment difficult in which to survive, she still wants to succeed. She is not a quitter by nature.but the senior woman, does not see it this way.
Naina leaves Minoo Tai, and walks engrossed in deep thought, and Daksh knowing her difficult situation goes to meet her, but then comes the flamboyant Abhi, not aware of any hurt or pain in Naina, but all anxious to make her fit into his plan, to please his mother whom he needs more than he needs Naina, and get her to do what his mother wants,thinking that it is an expression of Naina's love for him, but he does not know that it is all out of a sense of fulfilling her part of the promise, made without loving him. He thinks that he can have a comfortable life under the mother's roof, with a wife whom he can play with, in his spare time. The rest of her life, he will not mind, his mother using her to fit into her pattern, to do her bidding in the twilight of her life. Naina spots Daksh and smiles at him, and wants to go to him, but remembers the order of her 'mother in law' that now he is no more friend, but a respected brother in law ! So, she figures out her own way of showing this respect, and says to him, "Good Morning" very formally. It looks so comical. Daksh comes close and asks her about her hand, and then Abhi too asks,"What happened to her hand ?". The silly guy plans to kiss her hand, but she withdraws it from him, before he makes any advance.
The family is in the hall, and Rohini is with a bowl of fruit salad, finding fault with it, and asking Naina, how she forgot to put black salt. Naina tells that it was for her health, she put less, and
now Rohini demands more, so she brings and puts it for her. Rohini goes round and round leading her inlaws on to the subject of buying a new car for Sanket, but he had said he can not take a loan. She says that she told him, that when he has his parents, why should he take a loan. The father point blank tells her that he has no money, and then she starts pointing out that they spend money on unnecessary parties for Gudi Padwa and other festivals, and the recent anniversary party and the argument heats up, when she finds that her in-laws are not prepared to spend the money. She raises her voice and shouts at them, and the docile in-laws, swallow her insults without a word. Then it is Naina who comes to their defense, but to her surprise, the ogre woman, with her retarded sense of right and wrong, enters, and shouts at Naina on the top of her voice, a far cry from the gentle ways of her younger sister, Vibha, for speaking in front of the elders, without regard to norms of culture and tradition.
Family Meeting
She having already taken for granted that Naina is her daughter in law (even though she has no idea of her antecedents, and her parents) tries to impose her standards on her, and tells the "yes maushi" girl, that it is not her job to correct Rohini, who is her "Jetani", and to this nonsense, the parents of Daksh and Sanket have no answer even as they are the silent spectators of Minoo;s antics. Daksh wants to retaliate, but Abhi holds his hand back. Minoo asks Naina to apologize to Rohini, and orders her to do it now. All are stunned at the order. Rohini pretends to drop a tear, and wipes it, and commiserates that she has to bear this always from Naina, to the astonishment of her parents. Naina tries to tell Minoo, that it is not true. But Minoo, is a super woman, with superior intelligence, and with so much experience she has gained in bringing up her indolent son, amid so many obstacles, she has the right to dictate, to this family where she is just a visitor. That itself is in poor taste and her lack of manners and respect to her old brother in law, Vidhyadar. All are waiting to see if Naina will apologize. Naina looks at her future mother in law in the face, unimpressed, and says nothing...she keeps her mother in law waiting.
Perhaps, she is turning the pros and cons in her mind, and the usefulness of living with a woman like this, who is worse that her step mother Anjali. She left her house of comfort and luxury, for an ideal, and left it in search of better pastures. First to Darjeeling, and from there to Mumbai. Is this really what she wants?
As the episode ends, Abhi is with Daksh, and the former is in high spirits, that his mother has tamed Naina, and how much Naina has changed. He hopes that Naina will keep his mother happy for her whole life ! He is happy, that she adapts to his mother, so that he can have a good life with her. A typical selfish guy, whom the superwoman brought up, with so much pain and suffering. Mad world.
Daksh is annoyed at his cousin, and he asks, if he is not learning anything. Does he have any regard for Naina's feelings. Abhi wonders, what more she could expect. Limited world view of a selfish man. She has him, the best guy in the world! Daksh asks him, "Have you seen her face?" - How can any egoistic person see other people's pain?
