We all have to don many hats in life. We adapt our personalities to the situation. The way we interact with friends and family is different from how we interact with colleagues. An unforgiving taskmaster boss could be a very soft mother/father at home. We display completely different behaviors at a family get together than at a friends bachelor/bachelorette party. In many ways our online personas have different traits than our real life personals as well.

Everyone has multiple personalities, the trick is in understanding who we are and realizing that its not literally different people but all aspects of a core personalty. We balance our roles together.

When people are unable to balance their roles and take this to the extreme, then they suffer multiple personalities - splitting themselves into discreet, different individuals - each unaware of the other. I think the experts know more about the biological or social reasons that lead to this.

We have multiple personalities on IF as well. Same people but gazillion different IDs. But no one has been able to figure what their problem is really. Psychiatric issues? Fear of being themselves? Sociopathic tendencies?

Or maybe its why Voldemort split his soul into horcruxes. Is there a multiple soul disorder?

The society is responsible for misinterpreting the MPD. There is a fine line between bi-polar vs MPD and as in all mental illness there is stigma and ignorance regarding them. Though my understanding of this disorder begins as a self protection device for a person to be able to survive a horrific experience or experiences without going crazy. It would be a case where part of the mind goes into hiding, leaving another part of the mind to deal with the situation. The mind is seeking to escape in this process you could end up with several personalities until the mind finds the best way to cope with the situation or the situation changes. Is this a bad thing in society!

As long as the person does not harm anyone it is not bad for the society
