There are so many flyovers now: Nandish

Nikhila Pant, TNN | May 7, 2011, 12.00am IST

This is what TV actor Nandish Sandhu noticed as he, along with his wife Rashmi, travelled across Rajasthan and his hometown Dholpur...

This is what shows the extent of commercialisation that has set in," says Nandish. The " Uttaran" actor had gone to Rajasthan after two years and what surprised him the most was the development in almost all the sectors, all thanks to the attention that the state has been getting from television, Bollywood and Hollywood. "Since the state is always under the scanner, it is growing at a fast pace.

It's a stark contrast from the laidback and relaxed life that the people there used to lead. Earlier they were content with what they had, but now they have to match their pace with that of the world since all eyes are on them. What is commendable is that while everything is taking on a global face, the culture, ethnicity and heritage of the place is still intact. And they'll have to keep this alive to make sure the place doesn't lose it's charm." Did his wife Rashmi Desai, who is from Mumbai, like the place? "Yes, she loved it. Earlier she had gone to Rajasthan as a tourist and hadn't seen the real Rajasthan. This time I took her to see my schools, which are run out of old palaces. It's a mesmerising sight."

And this trip was different as he had gone there after two long years. "My career is in Mumbai, but in my heart is Rajasthan. My parents used to come and visit me in Mumbai but this time I decided that enough is enough and that I had to come to the place where I belong. Now, I've decided I'll come here once in every six months."

Nandish was the showstopper for a show at the fashion week in Jaipur last year. The Dholpur lad says that it is because of his roots that he is where he is today. He says, "As a kid I wanted to become a fighter pilot for the love of adventure, but that didn't happen because of some medical reason. I then took up hotel management thinking that after understanding the trade, I would start my own business.

I even took up a job but that also got monotonous after a while. I want to do things my way and can't take orders. And this was when I started doing modelling and did some print ads. Soon, I was spotted by a casting agency and stepped into the TV industry. For long my parents would call me and ask, "Acting toh theek hai, par career ke baare main kya socha hai?" It took me time to explain to them that acting is what I have taken up as my full-time career. I'm happy that I'm not doing a regular 9-5 job and since there is no pension that I'll get at the end of my career, I'm bound to be on my toes all the time and keep looking for something new that I can do."
