Chapter 7:
Geet trailed behind the three of them, watching silently as her two kids followed him into the living room. Placing their backpacks on the side, she paused, trying to reorient herself in this situation, try to figure out what she would say.
Because she knew for sure.
She knew that Maan would tell Diya and Dhruv about him being their father. He wouldn't want to wait even one more second, and honestly, who could blame him? She certainly couldn't.
Hearing him calling out her name drew her out of her thoughts, and she slowly made her way into the living room, the tension mounting with each passing step as series of questions flooded her mind all at once. How would Diya and Dhruv react? Would they hate her? Maan already hated her, but would he take them away? Away from their mother?
"Geet. Finally. Don't just stand there. Come on over and sit down, or are you scared of me?" Maan asked, patting the empty place next to him on the sofa. The kids laughed, but Geet saw the cold, hard look in his eyes, the ones that seemed to point out her guilt so clearly, throwing her looks that simply made her squirm.
"So Maan Uncle, Mom, what's the surprise? Are we going to get a pony?" Diya jumped into her questioning as soon as she saw Geet sit down.
"Diyaaa, ew. A pony? Who wants one of those? Can we get that new car Mom, the one that Roshun and I played in when we went to Toys 'R' Us?" Dhruv piped in, always ready with his own two cents.
Maan smiled at his two kids, "Sorry to disappoint you guys, but no. There's no presents, well not now anyway-"
"Then what's the surprise?" Diya and Dhruv were sincerely puzzled. In their little minds, a surprise meant a gift, a present, a box of chocolates, a toy, and so on.
"Well..." Maan suddenly turned over to look at Geet, "Do you want to explain this to them or should I?"
Her eyes widened, "Go ahead...I mean, I mean NO! I'll...I'll do the talking...or well, I'll try to anyways" she mumbled under her breath, her confidence sunk.
Taking a deep breath, she looked up to see the eager faces of both of her children and she began. "So guys, remember when you both asked about your daddy?"
"And you told us he went to heaven, right Mom?"
Geet groaned, she could always trust Dhruv to remember every little thing she had so perfectly. At times it was a blessing, and times like this...
She shook her head slowly, "That's what I thought Dhruv, but you see I found out a little while ago that your daddy isn't in heaven. I was wrong. You see, Mommy made a mistake"
The kids stared at her, clearly not comprehending the situation at hand. "If he's not in heaven, then where is he mommy?" Diya questioned innocently.
Geet sighed. Sending a quick prayer, she attempted this again, in a way that she thought would be much more clear to her six year old children.
"You see Diya, Dhruv. Your daddy's still alive, you guys will be able to see him-"
"You mean we have a daddy like everyone else in school Mom?!" Dhruv's eyes lit up like two lightbulbs.
And Geet nodded and heaved a sigh of relief. Phew. She got the basic message across.
"Mom! When can we see him? I want to play with my daddy and show him my new tea set, and ask him for a pony" Diya smiled, the excitement in her becoming more and more obvious as she literally jumped up and down on the sofas.
"So you guys sure you want to meet him?" she asked carefully, sparing a glance at Maan for the first time in the entirety of this conversation. Needless to say, she was a little surprised to see him sitting there calmly, a small smile on his face as he watched his kids.
And of course, they nodded vigorously.
And this time, Maan stepped in. Getting off the sofa, he went and kneeled in front of the two six year olds, and calmly told them that he was their daddy.
Geet held her breath, tension seeping through her bones.
But the kids couldn't have taken it better, as they jumped onto Maan, nearly tackling him onto the ground as they hugged him tightly.
"We have a daddy Maan uncle! And it's you!" Diya exclaimed happily.
Geet smiled, Phew. That went well! And she interjected, "Diya, it's not Maan uncle anymore. You get to call him dad now!"
"Oh right, I promise I'll remember from now on. You too Dhruv, ok?" Diya ordered her brother sternly.
"Dad, can you and me go to play outside in the snowman? And then have a snowball fight? Please please pleeeaseee?" Dhruv looked at his father with puppy dog eyes, and threw in that pouted look that he knew his mom could never refuse.
And of course, Maan was bowled over.
He looked at his two kids, tears glistening in his eyes. Hearing them say Dad, Oh he wanted to just hug them to himself and never let go! He missed out on six years of their lives, six whole years, and he would definitely not be missing anymore.
And that's when he finally turned back to look at Geet.
Throwing her a hostile glare.
A look she knew meant that whatever was going to happen, she wouldn't be happy with it.
Oh boy.
Precap:
"So daddy, are you going to live here with us now too? My friend Michelle's mommy and daddy live with her. You will too right?" Diya paused in the middle of her mac and cheese to throw a worried glance at her father. "You won't leave so soon, right?"
Geet looked at Maan anxiously, waiting for his response, hoping he would say that they would all just live there.
"No Diya, Daddy can't live here. You see, I have a business, a company to take care of back in India. So all of you will be coming back there with me."
He smiled, and quickly changed the subject, drawing Diya's and Dhruv's attention to a story about being on an airplane.
Of course, he had done that on purpose.
Geet knew.
He was warning her. The kids would be going back to India.
But what about her?
Thanks for the update, loved it! I cant handle Maan being so cold towards Geet- but then she did make the most stupid mistake lol!
Maan shuld forget all thngs n get happy happy yaar
