Other than worrying about Naitik's whereabouts during his trip out of town, I had to tackle Dadaji's health and even think of a way to help Nandini didi. But as they say all's well that ends well- so in the end, everything turned out fine, and I couldn't be more relieved or happier.
To begin with, Naitik had gone out of town but none of us could get in touch with him and this made me very anxious. After a night of turmoil, Naitik turned up claiming his phone wasn't charged. How irresponsible of him. I forgave him when he did accept he was in the wrong. He should have at least made some attempt to contact me and let me know he was fine. He really had me worried.
Soon after, Mohit's mother came to express her displeasure at the way Mohit and Nandini didi were handling their relationship. After she left, Naitik and I tried to re-unite Mohit and Nandini didi but they accomplished the task all by themselves. Mohit met Nandini and gave her a heartfelt letter after which Nandini didi decided to return to her sasuraal. Everyone was overjoyed.
I was surprised to see Dadaji come home early. He received a phone call from office that relayed some bad news and he got quite stressed. His condition began worsening within seconds. I was alone at home, so I had to think on my feet. I decided to drive Daddaji to hospital immediately, in spite of his protests. He was insistent on calling Naitik's father, but I decided to take action in this emergency. Thankfully, my driving skills came in handy at this hour of need. The doctors told us that he had a mild heart attack and it was good call to bring him straight to the hospital. Waiting for doctors to give him a clean bill of health was difficult. He was kept under observation for two days which was nerve-racking for everyone - especially bhabhi maa. I took care of bhabhi maa, Gayatri maa in this hour of need as I was worried that they would fall ill worrying about Dadaji. By God's grace, everything was fine and the doctors said that Dadaji was recovering well.
My quick action in the emergency was the right decision as one shouldn't panic when faced with a dire situation. While it is tough, the sensible and practical thing to do, is focus on the problem and find a solution, instead of getting over emotional, worrying and not doing anything about the situation.
This episode made Dadaji realise that Natik and I were still part of the family, their loving kids and responsible too, as we proved in this case. He got very emotional after his return from the hospital and welcomed us back into the family fold. I couldn't believe when Dadaji called me his daughter-in-law and asked me light the diya near the tulsi. Naitik, me and everyone had tears in our eyes when Dadaji became poignant and said he felt sorry for the partition.
Elders are the pillars of any family and being children, it's our duty to take care of them. My advice to all young people is -cherish and respect your elders. Don't disobey or ill treat them. Not only are they experienced than us but also help, guide and love us. Every family member should strive to keep their family together, bonded with love and respect. At some point in your life, you may have to take care of your parents who spent their entire lives, time, love and money on you. Those who are taking care of their aging parents have to make decisions that can greatly affect both their lives and their parents' too. Here are some pointers as to why it's important to care of your elders.
Establish a bond with the elderly person in your care. Bonds are important because a relationship based on trust and warmth is likely to be a successful union.
Routines are a powerful tool to use when you are trying to establish a bond with an elderly. Routines can help foster bonds because they make the elderly feel secure and comfortable. They will also make life a lot easier for both you and them.
Get to know the person in your care. Before you can establish a routine, you need to find out as much as you can about the person. You may be acquainted with them, especially if he or she is an elderly relative. However, if you have not lived with that person, there may be many personal habits that you should know about. Familiarise yourself with their daily habits.
Keep important numbers of doctors, hospitals etc handy. Make a list of their medicines, doctors with timings, closest chemists, preferable one that is open 24 hours, to use in time of need.
It's important to remember that it is not good practice to impose your routines on the person in your care. They are individuals with likes and dislikes, so a good and effective routine is always based on mutual interests. You will need to be prepared to compromise too. Trust and mutual respect is a must when taking care of an elderly person.
