Starting with the dance-I love how he made her laugh, just like that. He's always been able to do that-no matter what the situation is, he takes her for a little time-out, and the rest of the world fades away for just a little bit. She was ADORABLE as she tumbled so breathlessly into his arms, and told him exactly what she was feeling-"I'm freaking out". And he made her laugh, just by being himself- "Do you remember the last decade dance ? The vampires were all AAAARRGHHHHHHHHH, and you were all AAAAAAAAA !!" And then she smiled so gently and said,"And then we won." And he cupped her hands so gently and said, "Yes we did." You could see in that moment what they're capable of together, how they give each other strength and hold each other up in times of need. How she believed in that moment that yes, they could win. It was Damon and Elena the way they always are with each other, whenever one of them is devoid of hope, the other one is always there to show the way.
And then she slaps him-with all the pain and hurt in the world written on her face. That's the kind of emotional impact they have on each other. I love how real and raw they are with each other-they always show each other exactly what they're feeling. And if they don't, the other one understands anyway, because they have something, an understanding, a friendship, because "a friend usually knows when a friend is hurting". And I LOVE their "something", their friendship, because if they ever got together and fell apart, no one can take away this connection, this friendship from them. I totally love Jaan for saying what she did, that they're slowburn and that's the way it should be. No matter what happens in the future, this bond, this connection between them would be solid and real and binding, even if their love fell apart, they would have this something to fall back on, because they're more than just love, they're friendship and understanding.
Later, she walked into his room, and told him that no matter what, she couldn't let Bonnie die, there has to be another way. And he told her while he certainly hopes that there's another way, if push comes to shove, he will always choose her. Its not that he's going on a killing rampage randomly-he wants there to be another way, but if there isn't he would always choose her, without qualms, without any hesitation. And I LOVE Elena's reaction to his words-she looks at him a little in shock, but she accepts it. She accepts it without argument. Because that's the way they are with each other-real, raw and with no pretenses. She may not agree with him, but she understands and accepts where he's coming from, and what his choice is going to be. And while she'd make a different choice, she understands him, coz that's the way they always are. They may make completely different choices, but they always, always understand where the other is coming from. She understands and accepts, and makes a choice of her own. When she's walking out of that room, she looks back at him twice (Jaan, I <3 you, lol). It was almost like she was looking for a reason to stay. There was so much she wanted to say, and could have said, but she didn't. Because that's how they are, they don't need words. They don't need words to communicate and understand each other, they've never needed them. Because they always just know. They've had this something since the very beginning, when they weren't even friends. How she just knew that he was hurting over Katherine, "I'm sorry, you lost her too." And how he was the only one who knew that she wasn't happy cheerleading again after her parents death.
And that's why I'll ship them forever and ever-they don't need to be "together" and say "I love you" to prove what they mean to each other. They are just who they are. She's his light, his life, he's her friend, her laughter. They can make each other angrier than anyone else can, and in the throes of that fury, they can make each other laugh. They hurt each other, fight with each other, but most importantly, they fight for each other. He'd do anything to protect her, and she knows that. She found in him something worth saving when nobody else did, when he himself didn't. She's the only one who can hurt him in the ways she does, but she's the only one standing in between him and his pain and darkness when it really counts. Because even when she says "You have lost me forever" and tries her very best to shut him out of her life-she can't. Because their something is real, and as Elena says, when its real you can't walk away. She hits him, even when she can't cause him any physical pain-because she's Elena and he's Damon and it hurts him in other ways. She hurts him because she sees what he's capable of being-who he was before Katherine, before all the pain. Because she knows the real Damon, because in front of her he can't pretend that he doesn't care.
Because he'll always choose her, and she knows that. He chooses her over even himself-because he loves her enough to walk away from her, because he doesn't "deserve" her, because her happiness lies with someone else. Not everyone has the strength to do that-not everyone has the capacity to walk away from the one they love knowing that it would be good for them. He may have stopped fighting for her, because her happiness lies with Stefan, but he'll never stop fighting for her life, even when she's told him that "its always gonna be Stefan". He accepts that, and he'd still rip his heart out for her in an instant, he'd choose her over everybody, over himself in an instant, even when he knows that she'll never love him back. And that's why his love for her is selfless and beautiful.
It would be so much easier for everybody concerned if they just walked away from each other, but they don't. What they have is messy and complicated, but its real and worth fighting for. Which is why she fights the world for him, and fights away his own fears when nobody sees in him anything worth saving. Which he's why he'll do anything to save her, even though she may hate him for it. Nothing matters more than her, and he'll even stand her hatred-no matter how much it hurts him, because he'll always choose her over himself.
What they have together may not be epic, but its real and beautiful and genuine. And it can only strengthen over time-till they time they won't be able to deny it anymore. Which is why they're meant to be together. But even if they never get together, its alright. What they share without being together is more than enough. That's their beauty, their understanding, their "something"-their unspoken connection that doesn't need words or a definition or togetherness.
