Chapter Nineteen
The Cold Deck
Baji had finally managed to buy the beers, and make his way back to the boxing club as fast as he could, he still hadn't explained to Bhau why he blew up the safe house, he couldn't believe they had a traitor amongst them, and it was important for the information to be passed onto Anna that Roopa and her daughter had been killed in the blast, which he knew had been passed onto Anna by now, and now it was Shinde...one of the bodyguards turn to take his trip up to heaven, or more like hell thought Baji, who was still waiting for confirmation for his car crash.
Your totally wrong Saab, yes it's true that when sombody loves someone, they give them their everything, but when someone new comes into your life, you don't even realise when they begin to have effect on you, and before you know it, you have gained everything from the person that begins to love you...she explained to Dutta, still determined to make him believe that true love will reside in him again.
What do you think Naku, I too wanted everything in my life, when I had loved Seema, I didn't want anything else, I thought her love was enough, but I guess I was wrong, he said feeling gutted that he had once loved such a woman, and 'till this day he still could never be sure if a part of him still loved her or not.
Tere sapno ki tarah, mera bhi yehi sapna tha...he said looking at her in a strange kind of remorse, while he played with his fingers, but when he saw Naku's confused face with her crease in her forehead, he let out a chuckle and nodded his head in humoured way......no Naku I don't mean that my dream was to have a groom like Salman Khan... he said quickly reading her thoughts, and when Naku had looked down in embarassment, he knew that he had guessed right, I may be hurt Naku, but I haven't become that desperate yet he thought, thinking how naive this girl was, as he carried on...
...well, main yeh tho nahin chahata tha ke Salman gori pe sawaar hoke aaye, lekin main itna zaroor chahta tha ke meri pasand ki dulhan ko main poore reeti ravajo ke saath apnao, main sirf itna hi chahta tha ke Ayi Sahib uske ghar pe jaake mere liye uska haath maange, aur meri baraat meri dulhan ke aangan par jaake rukhe...jahan hum dono apni poori zindagi ek dusre ke naam kar sake...jab hum agni ke saath phere lagai to hum har ek vaada poore dil se nibhaye....lekin aisa kuch hua nahin, Seema ne mere sapno kho thukra diya....he sighed a tired sigh, and said you know Naku all I wanted to do was court my lady in the most perfect and orderly fashion, my thinking is very old fashioned, but I like things done the proper way, but I can no longer give the respect I had back than, but I know Aye Sahib has longed for that day to come in my life...so that's why I've taken this decision to marry Supriya.
Baji had finally come, and explained to Dutta what had took him so long, but Dutta already told him that Roops had filled them in on the information. They began drinking their chilled beers, and Baji had considerately remembered Naku's presence and bought her a few cans of Coke, and popped it open for her without asking.
Dutta had decided not to waste any time, and asked Baji why the safe house was blown up, and Baji had immediately filled Dutta on all the information he needed, and told him that both the girls were fine and safe, they were shifted farther in the area, and Shinde.....as Baji took this name Baji nodded his head in a sense to indicate that he was the snake in their pit without telling it was him..., Dutta understood that he was the traitor and listened to what Baji was about to say regarding him... well he unfortunately had a car crash Bhau...er, as he threw a glance at Naku who was sipping her coke through a straw and didn't seem like she understood much, he carried on ....his brakes failed Bhau...causing the car to crash with force into a tree, and word has it that he couldn't get out of the car because of the car door hinges which had been damaged badly during the impact of the hit and couldn't escape, and no one had come forward to help him as the engine had started to explode so fast that the people had feared their own lives... finished Baji, who looked at Naku's face which looked worried for the man in question. Dutta had understood that Baji had taken care of the whole situation neatly and no one would suspect his sudden death, this is what Dutta loved about Baji, he dealt with such big problems with such ease that no one even had a clue when such big dangers were lurking over their heads, just like he had taken care of Govind's murder, and had made it look like a tragic fire.
Baji kal uske parivaar walo ko paise bhej dena, aur dhyan rahe ke uske bacho ki padhai par koi nuksaan nahin aana chahiye theek hai, unke poore parivaar ka karcha hum uthaynge, uski biwi ko yeh baat samjha dena...theek hai Baji, ho Bhau...main sab sambhaal lega..
They reached the home after much talks of business, which didn't really interest Naku much, apart from the fact that a man had lost his life in the most horrible way, but than Saab had taken care of everything for his family that was left behind, how can such a beautiful minded man give himself such little respect, she found it hard to believe.
Dutta had asked Naku to serve his food to him in his room, while Baji chose to hang around Naku in the Kitchen while he randomly picked through some snacks with his fingers as though he were some kind of food critic.
As Naku started to heat the food up she couldn't help asking Baji what the scenario with this girl and her daughter was, she'd told a shocked looking Baji that Dutta had told her little bits of the story already so there was no need to look so shocked she explained, so Baji being Baji never felt the need to hide anything from Naku anyway, and began telling her that this girl was apparently this gangster's prized possession which he loved showing off, but the truth was that his wife couldn't bear his children, so therfore he made this girls forcefully pregnant and forced her to bear his child for nine months, but than this girl had the sypathy of the gangster's wife Shubulaxmi, who told her husband that she will take care of the mother and child like her own, and had tricked her husband into sending them away for the nine months as she wanted the mother and child to be safe and so did Anna, for that matter and therefore they had all come to an agreement to be sent away during the later stages of her pregnancy, but when this girl had gone through labour, Anna was unable to reach the birth place on time, and it was announced that she had given birth to a stillborn....how Anna's wife had did it I don't know, Baji sighed in amazement, ...but I can tell you that she is a brave lady for going against her husband for that girl, she is the only one that knows her step daughter is alive, and also that the two girls are under Dutta's protection today, and she is the one who informed Dutta that Anna has news of his daughter being alive, and has been mad looking for them since than, but he still is unaware of the fact that Shubu is the one who hid the child, while the mother still remained with Anna but only kept contact with her child through Shubu's help, but when she made the mistake of sleepin with Bhau, that was the first time Anna had got suspicous of the child because we had a traitor amongst our men planted by Anna himself, he finished disgusted by the last fact.
Wow said Naku, I wish I could be that strong she send in mesmerization, this girl had fought against her fate and made sure her daughter had led a life away from all the khoon kharaba but she still let herself be abused by some disgusting man, and said, ...mujhe laga ke sirf meri zindagi mein hi Bappa ne dukh diye hai, lekhin muje lagta hai ke mere se zyaada uss ladki ko Bappa ki zaroorat hai, maine dekha hai Saab ki ankhoon mein ke unhe bohut dukh laga uss choti si bachi keliye, main kal Bappa se zaroor uss maa aur beti keliye paraatna karegi ...ke Bappa unki mushkil jald hi har le, she said as she began serving the food up, and flinched in pain as she tried to hold the tray of food.
When Baji had opted to take the food from her and give it to Dutta, as she had refused to answer what the reason for her injured wrists were, and told her to go sit outside in the back garden on the swing and he'll join her there soon with his food.
The moonlight was bright just like Baji had said, she thought as she sat on the swing chair with her feet up, and sat beside the covered food trays.
Dutta had told Baji of Naku's pathetic boxing skills, and his own pathetic manhandling skills, making Baji tut in shame towards Dutta, and began telling Dutta how eager and happy Naku had been to buy those chudiyaan and decided to taunt Dutta on the fact that he had to break the bangles that he'd gifted her, when Dutta had told him getting rather agitated by Baji's contstant concern for Naku that he will replace the bangles and there was no need to worry okay, he said putting a large morsel of food in his mouth and asked where's your food anyway, when unknowingly he'd agitated Dutta even more when he told him that Naku was waiting for him in the back garden so they could eat togther he said brightly.
Well you better hurry, said Dutta, ...you know the girl won't eat without you than he answered cooly not letting himself be bothered by this action, as he watched Baji leave.
Dutta couldn't understand why he was feeling so bothered by everything that had concerned Nakun these days, it was as if he had to try to make himself think of other things rather than her, and than Baji was always constantly going on about her in some sense or another. When Baji told him that they were both going to have dinner together in the garden, for some strange unknown reason Dutta had felt his stomach churn, he felt left out, why couldn't they eat with him, or they could've invited him outside too, he thought as he almost finished up, losing his apetite.
Naku smiled at the moon which was shinging it's light far and bright, thinking that maybe Gaurav and Roopa Tai would be staring at the moonlight too, when Baji saw her smiling at it and without thinking asked ...kaun hai, matlab...asked Naku abit startled at his arrival, ...jisse tum yaad kar rahi thi, he said while digging into his food in a hurry.
Naku chuckled at Baji, he was really beginning to understand her quickly she thought and answered, it's nothing like what you're thinking Baji, I was just remembering my Tai and thought that maybe she would probably be smiling at the moonlight tonight too, she said, ...and so I thought that maybe the moon can tell her that I'm smiling at her too, she replied.
Baji didn't really understand much of what she meant, but instead asked of her Tai, while stuffing his gob with big bites of food that were clearly too big for his mouth to handle.
When Naku hesitatingly answered that her Tai had recently moved to Mumbai after marriage some years back, and had eventually lost touch with them, and because of sudden change in circumstances we had to move in a hurry and if Tai had ever gone back to our old place than she would not find any trace of us, and in hope of searching for her we moved here recently but still haven't had any luck, pata nahin kaha hai meri Tai... she said hoping Baji won't suspect her strange story, while a confused Baji thought how that could be possible, but than these basti wale people were a bit weird in that sense, he thought to himself they even lost their children at the local mele, than who knows under what circumstances they had lost touch, and he decided to ask her the name of her Tai instead, and said he'll ask Dutta to look into it and maybe he could track her location down. Naku had immediately been up for this idea, anything to find Roopa Tai she thought, and than Saab was well established, he could have more a chance at finding a needle in hay stack than she ever would in a million years.
As she was about to mention her Tai's name, she heard a mouth organ being played in perfect tune, a music that was soulful to the ears...
(The same harmonica in the previous chapter)
She looked at Baji wondering why he wasn't shocked at the sound of it, in fact it seemed like he couldn't even hear it, or maybe he was too engrossed in his food, she thought and decided to ask him instead, Baji....Baji...yeh sur...yeh awaaz kaha se aarahi hai, she asked repeatedly as she got up to take a random look around her.
When Baji had told her to sit down and don't act so shocked he said not once glancing away from his food, lekin...was all Naku could fit in, ...yeh baja Bhau baja rela hai Naku, he said making Naku automatically turn and look in the direction of Dutta's room, she could feel her hairs standing on end hearing his music like it was vibrating through her body, she was loving the feeling she got by it, she felt happy and suddenly she felt herself fall in love within the space of two minutes all over again, and this time she didn't want to deny this feeling she felt content by accepting her love for Dutta, her Saab.
I didn't know Saab could play... she began, making Baji finish off the rest of her sentence and said, ..well not many people do..er...actually I don't think anyone does...except for me of course, he fitted in proudly, it's not something he likes people to know... went on Baji, but he does often play it when he either feels something sad or than something good, he explained.
....since when does he play asked Naku, wanting to know every detail, she couldn't believe the man she loved also shared a passion for music, one of the few things that could be reason for her to live, she couldn't explain the happiness she felt.
...well started Baji, the man really plays well but you know it's not the kind of story that your expecting warned Baji, causing Naku to frown in question.
Your choice said Baji, as he told Naku how Dutta came accross this passion, he told her that Aye Sahib and her husband Sriram Patil were not his biological parents, and he was in actual fact Sriram Patil's younger brother Damodar Patil's son. He was a complete drunkard and a useless gambler, he often placed bets with items stolen from his family, he would always taunt Dutta by the fact that he didn't do too well in school and was a good for nothing, he used to play cards with the other local drunkards in the area and sometimes a few people that were richer than the locals would also join them from time to time. Damodar would often put small objects up for gambling in exchange for a bottle of alcohol.
When one such day Damodar didn't have anything to gamble off he decided to put Dutta up at stake when he was only 9, and in return he would get a foreign bottle of Whiskey.
He believed that he would win...and he was winning but than suddenly the game had turned tables, the people he were playing with were clearly expert in these kind of card games, had just wanted to see if Damodar would live up to gambling off his child, and the opposition had became eager to see the outcome and eventually won, and were more shocked at the fact that the man had left his son there crying with them, and told them he would return with more money and to hold onto the bottle and his son, but he never came back.
Dutta was left crying and scared out of his wits, with a bunch of drunkards, the man that won Dutta had felt a little sorry for Dutta, for having such a ruthless father, and gave him his harmonica to calm him down, he told him it was the one thing that relaxed you and could relieve you of tension in an awkward time, and told him to try it, eventually Dutta became engrossed in the mouth organ given by his owner, who's name he didn't know to this day but his face was definately one he could still remember.
While those people had started their next game with a different bunch of novices, in the absence of Damodar, a fight had broken out because apparently the deck of cards they were playing with had been exchanged with the 'cold deck', which is how they were always able to win.
Basically a cold deck refers to a previously ordered deck of cards, which is preset from beforehand and is dealt in a fixed way, which result in a specific outcome.
But why is it called a cold deck asked Naku, curiously...?
Well that's pretty obvious Naku, answered Baji, ...because it when it is exchanged with the pre-set pack, they are colder to the ones that they were currently playing with, which usually warm up in the hands after continuous play, now some people don't clock on this, but there are some people who are familiar with these kinds of cheats, which those next set of people noticed, and Damodar didn't.
When the fight had broken out Dutta had hid under one of the tables in the far corner, and by this time Kaka Sriram had come to the cheap Inn and found a scared Dutta hiding from the bloodshed that was taking place before him.
After that night Dutta had hated his father well beyond my imagination, he was much loved by Aye Sahib and her husband, and eventually one day when Damodar was going to go to gamble again, this time with the vintage style mouth organ Dutta had grown much fond of, which Damondar thought he could cash without feeling any regret towards the previous encounters with his son. This was when Kaka had tried to protest with his younger brother, and they're house was currently supported by scaffolding which is where Kaka had fallen from and died, and Damodar was held responsible for his murder, the police was called but we heard that he'd got away, but no one knows the truth, as we never came accross him after that ever again.
Since than Dutta has always kept his mouth organ with him to remind him of his past and for some reason that man that had given him that musical instrument, I've always watched him play since he was young, he's never wanted to replace it, it was clearly that specific one that had meant something to him, finished Baji.
Fantastic isn't it.... the way he plays, he added finally being able to share his thoughts with someone regarding Dutta's musical talent after a long time.
Naku couldn't put it in simpler words, she couldn't even tell Baji how much importance music held in her life.
