Ranveer-Sonakshi defend their top slots

Karan Johar wonderfully moderates the subject on rise of debutants in Bollywood.

Energy filled with honesty and conviction touches even the heart of a cynic. And this year, Bollywood is clearly re-energizing itself with young blood. Day three at FICCI Frames 2011, threw in a bit of glam factor with young talents as panelists like Sonakshi Sinha, Ranveer Singh, Karan Johar, Kiran Rao, Abhishek Sharma, Vikramaditya Motwane, Manish Sharma and Habib Faisal, who have openly and with all honesty discussed the new movement that's gripping Bollywood these days ' The rise of debutants.

2010 saw the maximum rise in fresh talents and BO bounced back in its own way. Looks like it's a 'Gen now or a never' time. When Kiran Rao said that the new-age moviemakers have their own unique voices and its reflected in their cinema , she opened the trajectory to discuss the new age cinema by new age filmmakers/actors, for the Gen Now and of the changing times. As Sonakshi puts it, "Each of us is an individual entity and has a unique identity. And what will binds us together is the promise to deliver our best". Yes the movement has begun......

But the question now is... will the movement sustain? "A large segment of our cine-goers are teenagers. So keeping that in mind, the biggies have jumped onto it. Yashraj and UTV are doing a brilliant job of it and I am following. The process has begun," admitted Karan Johar, whose production house is making 3 new films with brand new talents.

"Studio backing is a must; it helps to take your movie to the people. Also this is the right time for experimenting with newer concepts. It works. 'Udaan' would have been lost, had it come out 5/6 years ago" says filmmaker Vikramditya who had UTV's support to push his debut film Udaan that bagged many awards.

Abhishek Sharma's who directed the comic-gem Tere Bin Laden added, "Producer's eye for good subject and faith in new talents can be boon for sustaining the new age cinema. It's all on them to stir the movement and we all can aid them with our vigour and freshness. That's sign of changing times".

Yes, signs are encouraging for newcomers. When we see a new crowd puller emerging on the showbiz horizon we celebrate with him. Debutant Ranveer Singh ( Band Baaja Baaraat ) who's an overnight superstar today is little concerned though. "Cinematically speaking, suddenly everything seems to be centered on me. Filmmakers want me to choose scripts/ actresses etc, etc. It's a nice feeling, but it's also a cause of concern. So I sincerely hope that this new movement on new-age cinema can humble the star system and bring back the filmmakers' focus on good content, than just the stars," he voiced.

It's nice to see good intent in place. But, it's a slippery turf, and to sustain here needs bowing down to the commercial diktats. While the young filmmakers publicly pledged to remain loyal to their brand of cinema even while working with big stars, Ranveer Singh won everyone's heat once again by concluding, " Mein kalakar hoon, mujhe dhanda karna nahin aata ( I am an actor who's job is to entertain people. I do need to understand the business side of cinema)".
