Aamir Ali set for TV comeback in comic avatar

New Delhi, March 26 (IANS) It's comedy time for popular TV actor Aamir Ali. He is set to make a comeback on the small screen after a gap of two years with SAB TV's 'F.I.R.', a show that he says will break his boy-next-door image.

'I was being offered a lot of run-of-the-mill stuff like family dramas and intense stories, which I have done before. But I have never done comedy. People haven't seen me in the genre yet. They have always seen me as a lover boy or a boy-next-door. But 'F.I.R.' is going to be a crazy comedy,' Aamir told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

The 33-year-old actor, who started his career with Ekta Kapoor's 'Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii', is confident that the audience will like him in the new avatar.

'Personally, I am not a person who can crack jokes all the time ; neither am I too witty. I am quite a quiet person...so when a light comedy came to me, I was more than happy. It will give me a chance to explore that side of me as well. I am sure I will surprise my fans with 'F.I.R.',' he said.

He is quite excited about returning to the small screen as an actor. Last year he was seen in a cameo in Karan Johar's 'I Hate Luv Storys'. He also participated in dance reality show 'Zara Nachke Dikha'.

But he kept away from daily soaps as he was busy travelling across Britain, Dubai, Bangkok and other international destinations for performances and corporate events. His last fiction show on TV was 'Bhaskar Bharti' in 2009.

'I took up 'Nach Baliye 3' and 'Zara Nachke Dikha' because it was a challenge for me to be able to dance. But I proved it to everyone that I can shake a leg. Similiarly, I am happy to have taken up something like 'F.I.R.' which will challenge me to go beyond my usual self. And I am pretty confident I will do it well,' he said.

Aamir will essay Bajrang Pandey, a corrupt cop in 'F.I.R.', and his character will enter the show April 12.

'I will be in an inspector's uniform all the time, I will be chewing paan...It's a very desi kind of character - a little corrupt, too fond of women. Bajrang Pandey is everything that a cop should not be,' he said.

In the show his character Pandey wants to get married, but he can't because an astrologer has told him that he would die on his wedding day. So, he maintains his distance from the show's famous protagonist Chandramukhi Chautala, played by Kavita Kaushik.

But what is it that's keeping Aamir away from marriage in real life, even when he has been dating actress Sanjeeda Sheikh for a long time?

'Certain sections of the media have been reporting that I have already married Sanjeeda. But there is no truth in it. Marriage is a very pure institution and I will be very happy to share the news with everyone when it happens. It will happen...I just don't know when,' he said.

New Pic of Aamir from the sets of FIR i guess in a Cop get up :-)

Content to be a TV star

That Bollywood has not been able to fully exploit his talent as an actor doesn't bother Aamir Ali and he is happy playing the protagonist in television serials. In talk with Madhur Tankha'.

Known more for his dance steps than histrionics on the small screen, television actor Aamir Ali has given dance a break to don the khaki in a popular serial.

Aamir is gearing up to play Bajrang Pandey, a police inspector at the Imaan police chowk in F.I.R. on SAB TV. Unlike, the archetypal pot-bellied cop depicted in Bollywood films, he is shown as a fit and well-toned policeman.

"At 30, Bajrang is the most eligible bachelor in town. Unfortunately for him, a renowned astrologer predicts that he will die the day his marriage is solemnised," he says.

As the heartthrob of Chandramukhi Chautala, this self-proclaimed daredevil is quite a romantic at heart but as soon as he remembers the jyotish's bhavishyavaani he runs away from her.

"But Bajrang is a smart fellow who ends up taking credit for everything he does not do. This is apparent from his never-ending stories of face-offs with a notorious criminal, Qatil Singh, whom he claims to have put behind the bars several times. However, in reality he has never faced him out of fear." )Bajrang has all the characteristics that a policeman should not have. "When I was given a brief about my character by the director, I immediately gave the nod because I wanted to do comedy. I am a big fan of comedy shows like The Great Indian Laughter Challenge."

On the silver screen, his all-time favourite is Mehmood. His comedy timing was flawless. His dialogue delivery and facial expressions made him a darling of the masses. He was simply outstanding. Among the heroes, I hold Govinda in high esteem. He has the ability to take comedy to a different level. Then there is Kadar Khan'senior citizens may remember him as a villain (he enacted negative roles) but for my generation he is comedian No.1. His comedy timing in films like Baap Numbri Beta Dus Numbri was brilliant."

Though Aamir has been in the television industry for the past five years and played the protagonist in many serials, his talent as an actor has not been fully exploited by Bollywood film-makers. "Honestly speaking, I am not dying to do movies. I am content and happy with my television career. All my serials have done well and as an actor this is immensely gratifying."

Though he came into prominence with Ekta Kapoor's popular serial Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii on Star Plus, the actor demonstrated that he was a gifted dancer in Nach Baliye-3. With his dancing partner Sanjeeda Sheikh, Aamir emerged victorious in the finals of the championship against Rakhi Sawant and Abhishek Avasthi, though the latter alleged that there was foul play.

What embarrassed the winners was that even Bollywood star Salman Khan, who awarded the winners, pleaded with Rakhi Sawant and her co-dancer not to leave the show in a huff.

Reminded of the incident, Aamir feels it is a closed chapter and he does not hold any grudge against Rakhi.

Clearly, Aamir wants to move on and leave the controversies behind him. He is aware of his limitations and the fact that a television career came his way accidentally. So he knows that the only way to prove his detractors wrong is to make the best use of this medium.

While Aamir honed his acting skills in serials, his dance abilities were fined tuned behind stage in Nach Baliye-3. Not surprisingly, he has been dancing at private shows in the country and abroad. "I have been dancing in shows along with Sanjeeda Sheikh."

Surprisingly, Aamir never planned to become an actor. He neither got enrolled into any acting academy nor went to any theatre school. "Difficult to believe, but I was employed with an airlines. Those days, I did modelling as a hobby and slowly got acting offers."

In his last Hindi film I Hate Luv Storys, Aamir played a flamboyant cocky character. "Initially, he is shown as a heartless man but towards the end he comes across as a good person. The film was made by Dharma Productions (Karan Johar's company). Whatever director Punit Malhotra narrated to me was given proper treatment on the big screen. Not a single scene was chopped on the editing table."
