Thank you Preethia. I still maintain the stand that Dev is a representation of almost everyone. No one, not even Geet (at least in this FF) is as sacrificial as they are made out to be in series. It unfortunately does not work that way in real life. If you see in this story, Geet is not worried about Dev's conflicts; she is only worried about her own life. Why is that not selfish?

No. Maan is dating an older woman. More details about their relationship in next chapter.

Chapter 8: Freestyle

She hung around the cafe like she usually did and it didn't surprise her when Dev didn't drop by as regularly as before. In the beginning he was a regularly sat in that cafe and with time, his visits lessened. She assumed it would be because he either reconciled with his ex or he found a new joint to hang around. It didn't matter to her but at times she wondered if this is truly the end of her relationship with Dev. She was alright with the development but the lack of Dev's presence in her life was glaring right back at her. He had been a constant presence in her life. They made a point to meet each other regularly or call one another when they couldn't or whenever they had some spare time. Only when he was out of her life she realized the amount of time she had actually invested in the relationship.

And also for the first time she realized why Dev was feeling conflicted and lost when he had come looking for her in the cafe. The familiar face, smell and touch gave a kind of comfort which eased out lines of stress.

She ignored the feeling of loneliness and said "Keep 'em coming" to the familiar barista. Barista had laughed at her and said "You want iced tea right? Not alcohol?"

"As if you have those things stocked in here", she jabbed happily.

"Well I can run across the street and buy a few. What do you say?" He wriggled his eyebrows and placed a tall glass of iced tea in front of her.

"Pass. I am not so much into that stuff you know? They are overrated if you ask me", she shrugged and sipped on her iced tea.

The barista moved on to other patrons and let her to fend alone. She was alright with that.

Her idle mind drifted to things that happened at her work place and it was stuck on seeing Maan with his girlfriend. She had expected him to date someone of the model variety – tall, beautiful and an absolute bombshell. But the woman with him was beautiful, looked mature and definitely older. She didn't particularly care or was bothered with it but she couldn't help but wonder why. She brushed it off as natural curiosity.

She felt the seat next to her being occupied. She turned around assuming it was Dev but was surprised to find the exhausted profile of Maan. She stared at him without blinking wondering why she had suddenly started running into him all of a sudden.

Cosmic bloody karma, she thinks.

"Fancy seeing you here", she initiated conversation. There was an ease that permeated between them during their random conversations. There was no emotional investment from either of them which made them to take a step back from everything they were familiar with and reassess the situation or a circumstance in a detached fashion. At least it was true in her case.

"I had come here once remember? After driving around the city without a specific destination in mind somehow landed me in this lane. I remembered the cafe and thought I might as well drop by. Monsoon rains reminded me how good of a time it is to have a cup of coffee. And speaking of coffee, how come you are drinking iced tea in this weather?" The conversation was utterly casual – weather and coffee. How more abstract could they get? She had a feeling that things were going to change soon. She could feel it.

"I have always liked coffee. When Dev and I started dating, he used to wait here for me to finish my part time job. He would have had two iced teas to go and we just used to walk all around this block sipping iced tea and talking about random things. After a while I realized that I was actually ordering iced tea on my own even when Dev wasn't around. Looks like there was a transmutation of his love for iced tea to me", she replied idly stirring lime in the tall glass. The clinking of ice stirred more memories in her and she deftly ducked from them. She didn't have the energy to deal with those things again.

"If hadn't known myself, then I would have thought that you were merely joking with me." He nodded with a smile.

"What is it?" She prodded. She hadn't taken him to be a man who could be easily influenced.

"Coffee", he grinned. She raised her eyebrows and couldn't help but smile wanly back at him. It was the first time she was seeing him in a completely relaxed mood and it was also the first time Dev wasn't the reason they were at same place at same time.

"I always had my coffee with cream and sugar. And this girlfriend of mine drops by my office and thumps a Styrofoam cup full of black coffee. I struggled to tell her that I totally dislike it, but her expectant face stopped me. So I ignored bitterness and drank the hot concoction. After that it became a habit", he reminisced and sipped coffee.

"Drinking coffee or girlfriend bringing it in to work?" She asked cheekily. He chuckled.

"Just drinking coffee; well I never told anyone that she was actually my girlfriend. It was already too bizarre for someone to visit me at work as my colleagues had already termed as a loner sociopath. Okay that was extreme but you get the point right? Now I am totally at ease with this hot, black and bitter stuff", he told her.

"She must be a wonderful woman", Geet said wondering what kind of a woman he dated really.

"Oh, she is. You met her at the hospital remember?" He asked her. Geet nodded. So he was dating that woman after all. Her face remained the same. He stared at her with a tiny smile.

"What? Is there something on my face?" She asked violently dabbing a paper towel all over her face. He grinned at her outburst and took the paper towel from her hands.

"You are fine Geet. I was anticipating that you might ask about… well never mind. It's nothing biggie." He shook his head and let it go.

"Tell me", she gently urged. She wanted to kick herself for the curiosity that surged through her about Maan's girlfriend. But she couldn't help it.

"She is seven years older than me which makes her forty one year old. I am asked 'why' every time people come to know about our relationship. Only then I realized how people are invested in other people's business." He answered tartly. She could empathize with him quite easily; she was sailing in the same boat for many years now.

"It matters to people isn't it? There are people with this different sort of thought process and do not really care for the unwritten rules of the society. Social laws are important – I don't disagree with that. But are they all that one need to lead a life that they want?" Her eyes had a faraway look and Maan wondered if she was talking about this with her experience with Dev or was there something deeper buried in her past? He didn't question, only nodded her to continue.

"Maan, do you know why people easily comment on things that fall on the boundaries or outside the common social acceptance? It's because the repercussions of the actions fall all around them. Sometimes people in question may face it while many times, they might not even realize the extent of their actions. Few relationships get scathing outburst from society because they are bound to fail one fine day." Geet said flatly. Her words hit home and he turned pale. She didn't realize the bitterness in her voice and the fact that her words had truly hurt him. There were recurring events in her past which had taught lessons to her very early in life about people, society and their nuances. Her first hand experience had involved quite a traumatizing experience which had left her scarred permanently.

The coffee mug which was in mid air shook violently as he tried to control the rush of emotion that rushed in him. He looked away from her and tried to control sudden surge of anger and disappointment. It wasn't something he had expected.

She wasn't something he had expected.

Her words rang in his ears and her unemotional utterance left him speechless. He couldn't sit there anymore. Her presence suffocated him and he had sudden urge to run faraway – a place where all these bullshit societal rules diluted in a sea of freewill. The woman sitting next to him had managed to shake his confidence in the way he understood people he met. He sincerely believed that there were people in the world who thought like him, lived like him and loved like him – the ones who believed in themselves, their choices and their decisions more than anything. He thought that Geet was one of those women. The first time he had seen her reacting to being stood up during her engagement had given him that idea. But it looked as if he was wrong by a very long shot. She was probably the same when the situation didn't matter to her. Self preservation was the most important tool in life, wasn't it?

He banged the coffee mug on table, slammed few notes on table without even looking how much he was paying and walked out of the cafe. When Geet saw him walking away from cafe and into the pouring monsoon rains, only then she realized the extent of damage her words had done. She took the jacket he had forgotten on his seat and hurried outside only to see pouring rain which gave the entire world a hazy perspective.

She stood outside the cafe holding his jacket in her hands and looking dazedly in the direction where he had gone to.

"Dear God, what have I done?" She mentally berated herself and stood in that position for a long time.

To be continued
