Part Twenty- Four

As the months passed by Shantanu and Khanak grew closer as a couple. They found out they were having a boy.

"It just like the tarot reader said in that hotel,"Khanak declared.

" Yes she was right. I am sorry I ruined the surprise just wanted to know what we were having so I knew what color paint to buy for the room,"Shantanu said.

Khanak waddled over to him. She was entering the seventh month now.

She smiled at him and cupped his chin.

" The doctor was concerned so she had to check everything. You happened to look at the results and got excited," she said.

Shantanu smiled at her in wonderment. Then he smiled at her mischievously

He put his arms around her and raise his eyebrows.

"We have to try again for our girl," he hissed.

"Dhaat, First let me have our first baby before you start talking about the second one," she retorted as she turned to walk away.

Khushboo and Madhavi advised her to start taking it more easy as her pregnancy progressed along.

Daadi was an immense support. Shantanu would somehow managed to make every appointment with her.

Godh Bhari(seventh month celebration), was a family affair with some close family friends in attendance. Gopi had recently gotten married and came to celebrate with Khanak. Sam called with her wishes as her visa expired so she could not return to India in time for the celebration.

Shantanu watched from afar. Khanak was glowing and she was immensely happy. He could not wait for their child to enter this world. Akshay and Sunil caught him sneaking glances at Khanak and teased him about it.

" Akshay Bhaiya I helped you out when Khushboo Bhabhi had her godh bhari," Shantanu insisted.

Akshay turned red and Sunil turned to make fun of him and dragged him off to play chess. Shantanu laughed after them. He had to make sure his son would be cool like him.

Khanak went into labor late one night right after completing her eighth month.

"Shantanu it's a few weeks early. I am so scared for our baby," she cried.

She had never felt this scared in her life.

Shantanu tried to be brave and stroked her hair gently as the doctor finally arrived in the hospital room to examine her.

"Khanak this pregnancy I know has been hard for you, but we have to believe he will be all right. We'll have our baby Khanak I am sure of it," he assured her.

He pressed a kiss on her forehead.

"I have to sign some paperwork but I'll be back as soon as I can, all right?,"

She nodded.

" Theek hai lekin jaldi aana," she pleaded.

He was astonished with what the paperwork he had in his hands.

" Mr. Khandlewal if we do not do a C-section we can lose both of them," the doctor informed him.

The rest of the family arrived on the scene.

Shantanu felt his face go pale. He could not bear to lose either of them.

Sunil put an assuring hand on his shoulder.

"Shaan c-sections are more common these days. I am sure Khanak will recover just fine," he assured him.

Shantanu leaned down on the table and signed the papers. His hands were shaking along with the rest of his body.

"Shaan, Khanak ko kuch nahin hoga. She will be absolutely fine,"Khushboo assured him.

Shantanu paused to take a few deep breaths before entering the room to tell Khanak the news.

" C-section? No one in Dhulwadi really ever got one," she stammered.

"Khanak it's the only way," Shantanu stated.

She looked into his eyes and realized the gravity of the situation.

"All right then," she said almost in a whisper.

Two hours later, the doctor emerged from the operating room.

Everyone looked earnestly towards her.

" It was difficult but Khanak and the babies will be fine," she assured them.

" Babies? What do you mean babies?," Shantanu exclaimed.

" Baby A was a boy as we saw on the ultrasound a few months ago. Baby B is a girl. She was hiding all this time. This explains why Khanak's water broke early, with twins a woman is more likely to deliver early," the doctor explained.

Daadi praised the gods that Khanak and the babies were all right. Akshay and Sunil came forward to support Shantanu, fearing he would collapse in shock.

" Wow Dad! We have twins," he said.

" Yes beta you have twins," Sunil said.

" Congrats Chote," Akshay said.

Khanak was brought into recover soon after. The babies were being checked by the nurses and pediatrician.

"Khanak I guess that tarot reader forgot to mention how close the kids would be," Shantanu declared.

Khanak smiled.

" Guess she did. We need two names now," she said.

" Yes we do. You wanted Sanskaar for a boy right?," he asked.

" He can go by Sandy if you don't want to call him that," she said.

Shantanu smiled.

" Daadi was saying once Koel would be appropriate for a girl if we had one," Khanak said.

" Then we have our names. Sanskaar and Koel Khandlewal welcome to the family," Shantanu said as the babies were brought in.

Seven years later..

Khanak had completed her education and had her own art gallery called K.S Art Gallery. Khushboo had her own boutique now. She had it named Kay Fashions.

Akshay and Khushboo had Akansha who was now eight and their son Gaurav who was five years old.

Shantanu and Khanak had their seven year old twins Sanskaar and Koel.

Sunil and Madhavi were proud grandparents. Sunil had recently retired and spent time with their grandchildren at home.

Daadi was often ill but continued to have the same charm as always.

It was one typical morning in the Khandlewal house. Khanak was trying to get all the kids ready for school while she prepared breakfast.

Shantanu was on the phone but got off when he realized all the kids had arrived in their room to create mayhem.

" Good thing you got off the phone Shantanu! The boys could use help with their ties,"Khanak hissed.

Shantanu smiled slightly as he indicated for Sanskaar and Gaurav to come over to him. He helped them get ready before approaching Khanak.

"Khanak you seem tensed today. Kya hua?," he inquired.

" I am just tensed today. Khushboo Bhabhi had to go in early for a meeting and the kids have presentations today," she said with a sigh.

He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close.

" Take a few deep breaths Khanak," he said.

She leaned back against his chest and took a few breaths.

They were interrupted by the girls yelling about their school bags.

"I better go see about their bags,"Khanak said as she blushed a bit.

"Khanak tumhe pata hai ki tu hi meri zindagi ho," he said.

She flashed him a bright smile. He leaned in and kissed her forehead.
