Sarju after knowing that Vishnoo had stolen her ring, wants to confront him, and rushes to the place where he is sleeping, and wakes him up in a huff. Radha rushes after him and stops him from taking any drastic action, telling him that it will hurt his uncle Heeraman, whom his father himself invited to stay in their house. Sarju cools and goes away, and Vishnoo stares at Radha, for saving his life.
In the courtyard, Ramdei is sitting on her cot, and looking at her rat eaten sarees, and grumbles at the fate which has brought her to this point. Her sister in law comes and tries to say things which agitate her more. Sarju comes over and sees his mother very angry and is pouting against his aunt, and she acts sly. His mother, tells Sarju to get some rat poison, as the rats have eaten her clothes. Laxmi takes the blame on herself, and says that all this is because of her and her family, and she will take the rat poison herself and die, and that will solve their problem. Ramdei is offended by this talk, and her son leaves the place to get the rat poison.
In the market he is sitting on the road side and pondering on all that has happened in his house, and Radha comes in search of him, and they argue. Her husband tells Radha that if they had a bigger house, it would solve problems, but Radha tells him that he has seen the city, and finds it difficult to adjust to the village life, but their whole life they have spent with more people in smaller houses, and they did not feel the difference. She tellsl him to come home with her, but he asks her to go ahead and he would follow later.
In the house, Phoolmani and her mother in law, Laxmi conspire and the daughter in law tells her that the haveli is going on auction, and if Sarju were to buy it, they all could live happily, and Radha comes and says, no. She tells them their present house has been tied to memories of their fore fathers, and they can not leave. Ramdei listens, and then as Laxmi goes on insinuating to her, the advanatages, and how she is indebted to her son, she is irritated, but says nothing.
In the haveli, there are people sitting for the auction. Lala, the money lender is tking a prominent place, and after him, the Pradhan of the village. Both hope to make their bids. The bid starts from five lakhs and goes higher and higher, at first Lala and the Pradhan bidding. When it had reached 9 lakhs, and Lala was having a proud look on his face showing that he had bagged the deal, he hears a new bid, and it is Sarju. Now the bidders are Lala and Sarju, and it goes higher and higher till it stops with 20 lakh bid of Sarju.
