The bad blood between Sunny Deol and Yash Chopra after Darr ('93) is the stuff of a Bollywood legend. Sunny Deol felt like he was cheated by the Chopras, and that Shah Rukh Khan was given a better deal than he had been given. Thereafter, the Deols and the Chopras never fraternised. But 13 years later, it looks like the Chopras want to bridge the gap.
They've approached Bobby Deol for their forthcoming venture, Jhoom Bara Bar Jhoom. To be directed by Shaad Ali, the film stars Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta. Incidentally, Bobby Deol was not the first choice for the film. The Chopras had approached John Abraham for the role, but his erratic behaviour threw them off. "John was behaving strangely," says our source close to Yashraj Films. "He wanted them to add a song in the script and make some alterations. But Shaad Ali was not willing to make any changes."
When contacted, director Shaad Ali, says, "I've just come back from Turkey and I am currently busy with the score of the film. But I am not in a position to divulge anything. I categorically refuse to give interviews; I don't talk about my films that are under production. Please wait for the official announcement from Yashraj Films."
The director wanted to cast John in the role because of his sex appeal and suavity. But when the producers realised that John was not interested in playing second fiddle to Abhishek, they started looking elsewhere.
So, is Bobby John's replacement in the film? "No, a replacement can only happen when you sign an actor. They were talking to a couple of actors for the role and finally zeroed in on Bobby Deol," says our source. This is the first time that Bobby will work in a Yashraj film. "Earlier Yashraj Films wouldn't approach Bobby because of the issue they had with Sunny. And Bobby too kept his distance from the Yashraj camp. The only Deol who worked for the Chopras was Esha Deol in Kaal," says our source.
Bobby Deol, on his part, said, "I don't talk about my projects. I would appreciate you calling the director or the producer for details. I am neither confirming nor denying anything." Bobby's skepticism about discussing the project may be a result of the Chopras's prohibitive stance in regard with divulging information about their projects.
In addition with this being his first film with the Chopras, it will also mark Bobby's first title with Abhishek Bachchan. In an industry that swears by the friendship of Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan, let's see if the second generation lives up to the legendary Jai-Veeru camaraderie.
