jhoolna mein baith aaj pee ke sang jhoole

It is referred to as the spring festival, and signifies the beginning of Basant Ritu (spring season).

It is a season when nature regenerates and every thing is fresh and new. New life is evident in the woods and fields. In North India the cool morning air is laden with the faint smell of Mango blossoms.

Shrill loud calls of the Koyal (Indian singing bird) pierce the tranquility of the morning without in anyway disturbing it!

Wheat and other crops enliven with new life and vitality. Mustard fields turn into a heady mix of yellow and green as the blossoms add color, poetry and romance to life.

It is a day of joy , prayers and hope
and play music of life...

lo phir basant aayi..
lo phir basant aayi
phoolon pe rang laayi..

chalo be darang
lab-e-aab-e-zang,
baje jal tarang
man par umang chayi
lo phir basant aayi...

kheton ka har charinda,
baghon ka har parinda
koi garm khez,
koi naghma rez subh ka raqeeb,
phir ho gaya hai zinda

phooli huee hai sarson
bhooli hui hai sarson
nahin kuch bhi yaad
yunhe ba murad
yunhee shaad shaad
goya rahe gee barson
phooli hue hai sarson
lo Phir basant aaayi.....
Phoolon pe rang laayi

It is customary to begin a child's education on this day in deference to goddess Saraswati. Before starting. The children are expected to recite the following prayer:
Saraswathi Namastuhyam Varade Kamarupini Bidyarambam Karishy ami Sidhirthayatu Mesada
(Oh Saraswati, sitting on the beautiful Lotus flower, I am beginning my education,)
Satwa Guna encompasses Learning, Wisdom and the Fine Arts. Goddess Saraswati is worshiped for spiritual enlightenment, the greatest wealth to man. The goddess is a favorite of religious and spiritual leaders. Hindu folklore puts the Learned on a higher pedestal than even the king. A King is honored within his Kingdom only, whereas the Learned is respected, even worshiped everywhere

The Basant fair is held in many villages of' the Punjab. People put on yellow costumes appropriate to the season. One huge mass of mustard blossom seems walking down to the fair.

Before Partition the main fair was celebrated in Lahore at the samadhi (tomb) of Hakeekat Rai who, though a mere lad, preferred martyrdom at the hands of the Mughuls to swerving from his chosen path of duty.

After Partition the patangbaji festival is still very much celebrated in Lahore. The day is called Basant there as opposed to Basant Panchmi in India.
