Today, 30th January, in India every year, is observed as the Martyrs' Day.
It is on this day in 1948 that The Father of the Indian Nation, Mahatma Gandhi fell to an assassin's bullet. India observes the day in memory of his martyrdom & of all those who gave up their lives for their country.

I can't help but equate the efforts of the members of this forum, who painstakingly and continously wrote letters to the channel and the production house to bring back their favorite show CB back, to Gandhi's teachings of non-violent movement.

So, here is a prayer that was the favorite of Gandhi.

English translation:
Vaishnav jan to tene kahiye je
One who is a vaishnav
PeeD paraayi jaaNe re
Knows the pain of others
Par-dukhkhe upkaar kare toye
Does good to others, esp. to those ones who are in misery

Does not let pride enter his mind
Vaishnav...
SakaL lok maan sahune vande
A Vaishnav, Tolerates and praises the the entire world
Nindaa na kare keni re

Dhan-dhan janani teni re
O Vaishnav, your mother is blessed
Vaishnav...
Sam-drishti ne trishna tyaagi
A Vaishnav sees everything equally, rejects greed and avarice
Par-stree jene maat re
Considers some one else's wife/daughter as his mother
Jivha thaki asatya na bole
The toungue may get tired, but will never speak lies
Par-dhan nav jhaalee haath re
Does not even touch someone else's property
Vaishnav...
Moh-maaya vyaape nahi jene
A Vaishnav does not succumb to worldly attachments
DriDh vairaagya jena man maan re

Thanks Bee for the sentiments and posting the poem and the English translation--This is one of my favorites...

The words are so meaningful and it bears that we spend a moment every day and especially on this day to remember the sacrifices that were made for India to achieve its independence and remember those that are still fighting the injustices of every kind...

It also reminds us that We have the power--and that pen can be mightier than swords. If we believe in something, we should fight for it...

And to a large extent CBians, in their fight to bring AVINA back, really proved that collectively we are able to bring about a change...

Martyrs Day – Mahatma Gandhi's Death Anniversary

Yesterday, marked Mahatma Gandhi's 63rd death anniversary

''In the present world, that is seeing the tense faceoff between the government and public in Egypt and Tunisia, Gandhiji's guiding principles need to be remembered. He preached non-violent protests, tolerance and peaceful coexistence of people from divergent religions, races and castes.

His presence is sorely missed in the world today. The leaders in government and corporate sector are motivated through greed, unethical practices, tyrannical and autocratic thinking. They obsessively cling to power by whatever means possible. The idea of sacrificial leadership for the benefit of the masses is non-existent. The agenda is to cater to one's self interest by deluding the masses. Conflict between public is raised by playing on emotions to raise them to fight on behalf of their community, religion, race or country. Leaders do public propaganda to misguide people to self-destruction rather than guide them towards constructive and spiritual behavior.''

We remember Gandhiji for having the courage to stand up for the betterment of all humanity. We wish there were more leaders like him today. Mahatma Gandhi's quote which we can learn a whole lot from:

"A 'No' uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a 'Yes' merely uttered to please, or worse, to avoid trouble

thank you Bee

Thanks all of you!

Radhika5,
How nicely written!
Yes, I agree "Pen is mightier than swords".

Shanta,
I wonder if things would really be different if MKG was still alive (I mean atleast till few years of the beginning of the modern era) .. but I do not wish, he would simply be disgusted to see what has happened to his country (forget the rest of the world!)
