U.S. to Host World Press Freedom Day in 2011

Press Statement
Philip J. Crowley
Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Public Affairs
Washington, DC
December 7, 2010

The United States is pleased to announce that it will host UNESCO's World Press Freedom Day event in 2011, from May 1 - May 3 in Washington, D.C. UNESCO is the only UN agency with the mandate to promote freedom of expression and its corollary, freedom of the press.

The theme for next year's commemoration will be 21st Century Media: New Frontiers, New Barriers. The United States places technology and innovation at the forefront of its diplomatic and development efforts. New media has empowered citizens around the world to report on their circumstances, express opinions on world events, and exchange information in environments sometimes hostile to such exercises of individuals' right to freedom of expression. At the same time, we are concerned about the determination of some governments to censor and silence individuals, and to restrict the free flow of information. We mark events such as World Press Freedom Day in the context of our enduring commitment to support and expand press freedom and the free flow of information in this digital age.

Deepakji, I am confused here. The UN is concerned about censorship and lack of free press in nations. It will be highlighting that in World Freedom of Press day. What is the joke in that? 😕

Actually the press release is from US State Department. In the light of US employing every trick in the bag against Wikileak and Julian Assange..it sounds...🤣

On second thoughts, never mind. I am becoming less of a debater and more of a spammer.

Someone commits the crime, and someone else pays for it..... the biggest story in the wikileaks documents is the proof that Pakistan used money given as aid to fund terrorism.

This very money, had it been used for infrastructure, the coming nightmare could have been avoided totally....For 40 years, the money that went into guns, if the money had gone into food, clothes and medicine and infrastructure, these floods would not have been so bad.

The same money that Wikileaks exposes from Swiss bank accounts.

The same money that Wikileaks exposes in these documents.

The same money that comes as aid to fight terror from the Bush administration groups

Big guns loaded, but target washed away!😕

Frankly Wikileaks if allowed is full press freedom. But I believe sensitive info should be carefully handled. Just like the forums banning certain topics.

See first of all we need to assess the meaning of freedom or liberty. For us, freedom is something that allows us, as individuals, to do whatever we please. However, legally, freedom is the ability of doing whatever you please as long as you are not hindering or violating the same 'freedom' for other individuals. That is what is being highly debated at this point with the whole WIkileaks affair, I guess.

Most of news media says 'its a classic battle of the righteous individual against the powerful institutions'...but sometime I feel Assange is the Robbinhood of this corrupt media and computer age were everything is fabricated to mislead the common man and make them fight...bt now everybody know that USA does play double games with nations..

Just saw a comment on one of the wikileak related articles on CNN
I am going to print out some t-shirts with quotes from leaked state department cables found on wikileaks, then i will wear one of them and walk around in front of the federal recruitment booth at a job fair so that all applicants are automatically disqualified.
Pakistani media publish fake WikiLeaks cables attacking India

Comments alleged to be from WikiLeaks US embassy cables say Indian generals are genocidal and New Delhi backs militants

They read like the most extraordinary revelations. Citing the WikiLeaks cables, major Pakistani newspapers this morning carried stories that purported to detail eye-popping American assessments of India's military and civilian leaders.

According to the reports, US diplomats described senior Indian generals as vain, egotistical and genocidal; they said India's government is secretly allied with Hindu fundamentalists; and they claimed Indian spies are covertly supporting Islamist militants in Pakistan's tribal belt and Balochistan.

"Enough evidence of Indian involvement in Waziristan, Balochistan," read the front-page story in the News; an almost identical story appeared in the Urdu-language Jang, Pakistan's bestselling daily.

If accurate, the disclosures would confirm the worst fears of Pakistani nationalist hawks and threaten relations between Washington and New Delhi. But they are not accurate.

An extensive search of the WikiLeaks database by the Guardian by date, name and keyword failed to locate any of the incendiary allegations. It suggests this is the first case of WikiLeaks being exploited for propaganda purposes.

🤣🤣🤣

Kab sudhrenge yeh Pakistani? Didn't they think people'll search for those claimed things in the leaked documents? 😆
