Survey on Indian Television Industry-NYU Poly

Hi Folks,

I am a graduate student at NYU-Poly, doing research on the representation of women in Indian television, and am currently looking at the occupation of the female characters shown in the Hindi serials.

I would really appreciate it if people on this list could send me a few brief responses with the names of some of the key characters in this show and the occupation they hold (there can be more than one female character from a single serial) –even the serials which used to be aired in the 90s are welcome. The kinds of details I am looking for are as follows:

She is just an average 18 year old girl from a village in punjab. She was forced to get married to an NRI who ditches her and she gets pregnant. Her family - brother and dadaji go against her and even try to kill her, she not only escapes but also gets her brother arrested and leaves for Delhi to save her to be born kid and she starts out work as a secretary in a construction company. Within no time she is assigned to take forward a project because of her ideas. Even after going through many issues both in personal and professional front she is determined to prove her abilty without seeking help from others.

She too agrees to marry Prem because her father asks her to do so. She easily accepts Prem's family as her own and handles all responsibilities as a daughter-in-law of the Juneja family very well. She loves Prem very much and trusts him blindly.

Her occupation:Kumkum is the favourite daughter-in-law of the Wadhwa family. First, she was married to Jatin; after Jatin's death she was engaged to Vishal but for some reason Vishal's parents called off the wedding and in the hustle bustle Sumit got angry and confused and applied the "sindur" on kumkum's forehead and so they got married and she had to face Renuka being Sumit's new wife and also had to face the problems and later on they had three kids Druv, Sharman and Aashka. And suddenly she faces a huge problem'so huge that it becomes the reason for her death. But again Kumkum is back after her reincarnation as a "chulbuli" prankster and even in this "janam" she kind of starts "liking" Sumit and due to some consequences, she has to live with Sumit as his wife and helps him in many ways. Recently she has also fallen in love with Sumit, but doesn't want to admit her love to him as Sumit's father, Om Raichand insulted her and her father Chandu Mishra, of wanting to marry
Sumit for money. After all the problems are solved, Kumkum and Sumit live happily ever after
