It's been a rough and sorrowful week for loyal viewers of Star One's popular youth sitcom 'Miley Jab Hum Tum'. The show that ran successfully for more than two years and topped TRP charts had it's last episode airing today. Based in a light college environment, it related to younger audiences across the globe, winning hearts with a lovable cast, and also bringing Hindi Television to a whole new level. Many were relieved from the typical "saas-bahu" concepts, and more viewers starting seeing the potential of Hindi channels. Let us now look back on the journey of this memorable show.
Set in a modern day Indian college, 'Miley Jab Hum Tum' appeared to be fresh and unique, for once actually appealing to the younger crowd. Viewers were immediately attracted and were hooked. One such India-Forums member, 'hiiiiiiiii', recalls, "It was early September [and] my cousins were over at my house and we were all in my moms room just talking about random stuff and having fun. We were all being very loud and the tv was also on as my brother was flipping throgh channels...Then suddenly I heard a tune which made me turn towards the tv, it was mjht title song tune.........and I just kept watching the title song in the end it said mile jab hum tum coming soon only on star one. I swear the whole time watching that promo I had a billion expressions on my face with each and every character..'" For many viewers, it was the first time they saw something substantial! Member 'ginny09' exclaims, "Wow! Itne time baad tv par ek aisa show aaya [tha] jisse dekhna hi [tha] , saare characters amazing hai , show is fun and logical in displaying all emotions.."
And it's major plus point was the fantastically plotted out characters and the cast who enacted their roles. Rati Pandey as Nupur, Arjun Bijlani as Mayank, Mohit Sehgal as Samrat, and Sanaya Irani as Gunjan were the most ideal people to play such fine parts. IF member 'Vampire Princess' agrees by saying, "From the very beginning [there were] unique characters, all 4 of them, [who were] refreshing n simply amazing." The supporting charaters, Navina Bole as Dia, Abhishek Sharma as Benji, and Jas Karan Singh as Uday also fit into the plot quite well.
This was the first time from the youth when India saw a high response with positive perceptions after 'Dill Mill Gayye', which was the show's major competition. However, after the end of Season 1, DMG suffered a major downfall, leading many of its fans stumbling into the MJHT gang.
Everything seemed to have worked for 'Miley Jab Hum Tum'. The cast however, grew on people more than ever. Referenced as 'MARS', they all gained fame through this show, becoming more well-known and popular. "It made the leads popular in [the] television industry by their real names," explains member 'sireeluvarti', "they go for award functions, come on SBS ,SBB regularly,AB's australia trip, etc." Member 'samhit_pagali' adds on by saying, " [the show] helped the cast expand better and [become] popular into the world of hindi television.."
The serial started to obtain a bit of a slower pace after one of the lead couples, Mayank and Nupur, got married. However, fans were not quite angry as there was a semi-substantial track. Unfortunately, disaster struck a few months later at the end of May, when a TellyBuzz article reported that MJHT would go for a 3 year leap which would show one of the characters shown as dead, marking the beginning of Season 2. The forum went crazy with outbursts from fans, who had their own opinions and didn't want any to leave. As Season 2 unraveled, the audience saw Nupur, who was considered the "heart" of the show, shown as dead. This was perhaps the biggest downfall for the show, as there was a severe drop in TRP's where fans started to protest and quit the show. They did manage to get Rati back after two months with a substantial track, however, the damage that was done was sadly hard to fix. Although from there on, MJHT picked up, according to the channel, "nothing worked in favor of the show anymore". Member 'ruexangel'says, "DEFINITELY the leap. It was a disaster. The day I read the article about the accident and leap, my fury rose, and everything had just changed. I didn't believe when I started watching this show that it would take such a typical drama turn like that, it was totally saas-bahu like, and it ruined the taste of the show..." Another thing that led to the shows drawback were the newer serials 'Geet' and 'Odhani' which the show had been able to put off before Season 2. Most viewers however, feel that the lack of TRP's should not have led to MJHT's end because of all the popularity it had, but the real reason still remains a mystery.
When asked now, fans still struggle to pick their favorite character at the end of the journey. However, when asked, most agreed that it was none other than Nupur played by Rati Pandey, who has been an audience-capturer since day 1. Members 'sireeluvarti', 'ruexangel', 't-mayur-sajan-j', 'jes_jade', 'mayur4evr', 'ginny09', 'amritaluvarti', and 'dhano_arti' agree.
However, in terms of character development, the character who was mentioned the most was Samrat played by Mohit Sehgal. Member 'samhit_pagali' explains, "It's Samrat because in beginning he was a Casanova type who's always changes girls in a week but when Gunjan enters in his life..he improved in every thing. as a person.. as a best friend.. as a boyfriend..as a brother..as a son.." Members 'mayur4evr', 'ginny09', and 'dhano_arti' also agree.
When fans were also asked to pick their favorite scenes, many responded that all the scenes between the lead pairs are memorable. One member, however, 'jes_jade', recalls a particularly funny moment exclaiming, "When Benji-Uday kissed each other at new year party...it was hilarious..."
Forum members were asked who their favorite members were. Although it was hard for them, the names that came up included 'MohitzPari', 'AJ observer', 'Deblina', 'The Lioness', and 'Candylicious_SG'.
Fans will for sure miss everything about the show, as it had truly become a part of their everyday happenings. The post that summed up all that they wanted to say was by 'ruexangel' saying, "I will miss the nok-jhoks, the romance, the sweetness. I will also miss the friendship and fun element.." Member 'jes_jade' also sums it up by saying, "[The couples] and [the] Masti..." Majority of the viewers are also looking forward to a Season 3, which would hold new surprises and tracks for fans.
'Miley Jab Hum Tum' is being replaced by Marathi movie inspired 'Dhoond Legi Manzil Humein' which will start airing this Monday. IF member 'ruexangel' sums up the common responses by saying, "The promos look interesting, because it shows how life is unpredictable, and can change who you are so drastically. But I won't be watching it. This channel is too biased, and I don't think this concept can last too long without getting political (which I think is very much involved for the transformation) and personally I don't like politics, or typical over dramatic serials'" Most people do not like the fact of a political series airing on a generally youth-based channel.
Overall, We all wish the very best to the cast and hope for a Season 3 soon!
