Should the death penalty be re-introduced??

What do you think?

At the moment the terms dished out for serious crime, like murder, is a joke. There is no real deterrent hence it seems potential killers, especially the young, take the decision to kill lightly.

Today's events is a good example, 12 innocent people were killed by one man. If he was still alive now and in custody, he will only be facing a very long jail term. Is that fair??

Some here will argue that the death penalty may be wrongly issued to an innocent, but with today's technology etc this will be very unlikely.

Just legalise murder and you wont need any death penalty .😃

CID Pradyuman recommends phansi for all criminals.šŸ˜†
I notice several criminals upon release tend to commit more crimes when released.
But there are cases of transformation too.
But generally if the one commiting crimes is our own relative we tend to think that they can always reform but others will think otherwise.
Even the laws in different part of USA varies.
In Singapore it is death by hanging for certain crimes. Rest are caned and jailed.
In China they shoot them and the pics I saw are terrible and scary.
I posted them here before.

Why not? If a human can take the life(lives) of another human, on stupid issues, like religion, power, money etc..., then why hesitate do the same? Many would argue that if they do something that is morally wrong, why shouldn't we? Many would argue that if they do something morally wrong, why should we drop down to their level, and do the same? Well, if we don't do anything and give the culprit life imprisonment, he is basically feeding off of the nation's fiscal resources aka the taxes paid by the people, the public who was attacked and terrorized by that same person. This maybe a simple explantion to many people, but it is the truth.
But yes, one must be totally sure about the guilt of the accused, but then again, the law does take care of that, doesn't it?(waiting for this point to be argued)

Death penalty does not bother me as much. Being alright with death penalty does not seriously conflict with my other ethics in regard to life. However, while I am alright with death penalty being in effect (in many states) as well as alright with death penalty being abolished (in other states) - I do grapple with the fact if death penalty should be there or not.

Here are the reasons why I tend to be against it
- Sometimes it seems to kind. I saw the documentary on McVeigh where he had no remorse and felt he was like a martyr for being sentenced to death. It really seemed to defeat the purpose of 'penalty/punishment'.
- It is not easy being the executioner. Throughout history executioners have been known to be reclusive, depressed people. Even with modern changes like the lethal injection, it has been shown being the one dispensing death even to hardened criminals can have negative psychological effects on people. No one wants to be the one dispensing death.
- The risk, in recent times many condemned criminals have been found not guilty after new evidence. Should we take the risk of potentially killing a person who may not be guilty. Yes the court of law decided beyond reasonable doubt that they were guilty, but can we be sure beyond a reasonable doubt that they deserve death.

On the flip side
- Our prison system is overburdened with prisoners. Prisons are expected to have proper health care, human living facilities, food etc. As a society can we afford to and do we want to keep offering this even for the most heinous criminals.
- Is there a guarantee that they will not be pardoned/release on parole, and then not do it again after that. There have been instances where some really hardened criminals who no one expected were released because they softened up in prison - and then a small fraction of them did go onto murder again.
- Sometimes with terrible crimes like brutal rape/murder or serial rapists/killers, no matter what it is hard to pardon. For victims and their families death sentence will be most comforting after major loss.

Maybe someday I will be able to decide, but for now I'm not able to choose for or against the death penalty.
