We said it before, and we'll say it again: If you're going to try and kill an ancient, powerful vampire, please make sure he's actually dead before walking away from the body. If only Stefan and Damon had followed that advice! Now, unbeknownst to them, evil Elijah is still out and about, breaking windows and conniving to get that darned moonstone. They should have cut his head off when they had the chance.
Most of tonight's "Vampire Diaries," though, didn't focus around Elijah. Instead, as the ep's title indicates, it gave us some much-needed background about Katherine. We learned that a teenage, human Katherine'or Katerina, as she was known then'was thrown out by her Bulgarian family after having a baby out of wedlock in 1490. She soon traveled to England, where, in 1492, she became involved with Klaus, the oldest vampire in existence. (The original "Original," if you will).
Klaus wanted to sacrifice Katerina in order to break the curse that makes vampires slaves to the sun. When Katerina discovered his plan, she ran away and was nearly caught by his minions'until one of those minions, Trevor (again: this is a name someone would have had in 1942?), stepped in and secretly told her to take asylum with his buddy Rose. Rose wanted no part of Trevor's plan. She told Katerina she'd deliver her to Klaus anyway as soon as night fell.
This, inadvertently, led to Katerina becoming Katherine. The girl slit her wrists in an attempt to kill herself and keep Klaus from getting her. When Rose found out, she gave Katerina some of her own blood to help her heal. Then, when Rose stepped away, Katerina hung herself'and was reborn as a vampire. Ever since that day, she's been on the run from Klaus, as have Trevor and Rose. And they're not running for nothing: Klaus's thirst for vengeance is so great that he killed Katerina's entire family in retaliation for her allowing herself to become undead.
Elena learns all this when she takes a trip to the tomb. She wants to grill Katherine and find out more about their connection, as well as Katherine's master plan. As it turns out, says K, there's a lot more to it than just securing Elena the doppelganger and the moonstone. The breaker of the curse must also find a werewolf to kill, a witch to do the spell, and a vampire to sacrifice'which means Katherine was also planning to hurt Tyler, Bonnie, and Caroline. Twist!
Speaking of those three: while Tyler doesn't appear tonight, Bonnie and Caroline both have storylines of their own, Caroline spends the evening trying to distract Stefan, since Elena doesn't want him to know what she's up to. The two vampires hang out at the grill, where Stefan tells Caroline that he likes her because she reminds him of his best friend, Lexi. "You have a friend?" she asks incredulously in response.
Bonnie, meanwhile, has come to the grill to go on an actual date (!) with Jeremy. Her plans are derailed a bit, though, when she runs into a few new faces at the restaurant: Luka Martin and his father Jonas, who have just moved to town. Turns out that Luka and Bonnie share a connection'he and his dad are male witches, or warlocks. Bonnie ends up spending so much time with the new guy that Jeremy ends up leaving the grill without her.
Rose and Damon, meanwhile, go on a road trip to meet Rose's friend Slater, another vampire who apparently connected her with Elijah before the events of last episode. Damon's hoping that Slater can help them get to Klaus. Unfortunately, Slater'a super-intellectual who's been collecting degrees for as long as he's been a vamp'says his only link to the Original is gone if Elijah's truly dead.
Slater also gives us another interesting bit of info: Klaus is trying to break the curse because if a vampire breaks it, werewolves will still be bound by the hex's rules, and vice versa. Then Damon wants to know if there's a way to stop the curse from being broken at all; he thinks this would save Elena. The vampires' chat is interrupted when Elijah throws a handful of quarters at the caf where they're sitting, shattering its UV ray-proof window'and consequently causing every vamp in the place to start writing around in pain.
When Rose and Damon return to Mystic Falls, Rose tells D that with the huge fight that's coming, it might be time for him to switch off his emotions. "I will if you will," he tells her. Somehow, this conversation ends in the two of them having sex.
When they're done, Rose gets a call from Slater. He tells her that he's discovered they can destroy the curse if they can secure both a moonstone and a witch. He asks her if they can actually get the rock, and though it's still in Katherine's possession'she has it with her in the tomb, and she doesn't seem likely to let go of it'Damon indicates he thinks they can.
Then Slater hangs up, and we learn that Elijah forced him to make that call. It seems that as an Original vamp, he has the power to compel other vampires. Wait, what? So why didn't he do that last week? Anyway, he forces Slater to stake himself'and then, out of nowhere, Jonas Martin (father of new-guy-warlock Luka) comes out and asks if that was necessary. Elijah replies with chilling calm: "He delivered his message. It won't be long now."

The Sacrifice
Elena decides to take matters into her own hands and offers a tempting incentive to Rose for her help. When things take an unexpected turn, however, Rose calls on Damon to deal with the plan Elena has set in motion. Jeremy's reckless attempt to help Bonnie retrieve the moonstone lands him in a life-threatening position and forces Stefan to put himself in danger. Bonnie and Luka form a closer connection. Tyler shows Caroline the Lockwood cellar, where she makes a discovery that leaves them both terrified.
