I can't believe Balaraj is so cool and calm about Heer's pregnancy news. I thought for sure he would faint or fly to their home and kill Prem 😆. Well, I am glad her parents are happy about the news. Now, I am wondering what Prem is going to do with his mother. I wonder if he is going to try to make peace with her or not.Thank you for the PM Grace. Looking forward to your next chapter.

Part 17: Firecrackers
Heer followed the waiter to the back of the restaurant and out onto the veranda where Gayatri Juneja was sitting waiting for her. She politely thanked the waiter for pulling out the chair for her and ordered herself a glass of water. Heer glanced at the women sitting in front of her wondering what this meeting was about. She was sure after the way things had ended at the hospital she wouldn't even want to talk to her again. "Hello Auntie," she politely greeted.
Gayatri gave a welcoming yet stern smile. "How are you feeling?"
"Better, thank you," Heer responded.
Gayatri nodded her head. "You need to take care of yourself now that you going to be a mother." Heer looked at her slightly surprised by her rather caring response. "We didn't end on such a good note the other day and I think there are some things that need to be discussed." Heer sat there nervously trying to prepare herself for the worse. Gayatri paused as the waiter came back with Heer's beverage. She knew better than to talk about such personal things in front of strangers.
The waiter looked at the two women, "Are you ready to order or would you like a few more moments?"
"A few more moments, please," Gayatri politely replied. He nodded and left them alone.
"I want to apologize for my behavior. I'm sorry I shouldn't have said those things," Heer said.
"It was a community meeting'rather important one as we were voting that day," Gayatri explained. "But in retrospect I think it worked out for the best...considering the delicate nature of your health..." Heer sat there attentively listening to what she was saying and so far everything was relatively positive. Gayatri took a quick sip of water and was about to continued when to her surprise she saw her son walking towards them. "Prem?" she whispered. Heer immediately turned her head and stared at him stunned that he was there.
Prem pulled out a chair and positioned it closer to Heer and sat down. "Sorry I'm late," he simply stated as he straightened his tie.
Gayatri glanced at Heer with an accusatory look, "This is between you and me."
"As a secret, right? We don't keep secrets," Prem answered and took Heer's hand into his. "Whatever you have to say to her you can say to me too."
"Prem..." Heer said looking wide eyed at him. He shook his head and then addressed his mother, "She didn't know I was going to come to your meeting. I came on my own accord. So what is it that you had to say that you didn't want me to know about?"
Gayatri tighten her lips and breathed deeply knowing that he was in a stubborn mood. This would be their first full interaction since he left her. She turned her attention towards Heer, "The truth is I don't know you. I don't anything about your family...background...where you come from...what family you have in India...nothing.
"What, you want a full scale report? Blood tests? She's going to have pee in a cup for you? Should we get her school records for you too?" Prem replied rather irritated.
Heer turned to him giving him a cautious glance as she squeezed his hand in a reassuring manner. "Don't lose your temper," she whispered. Normally, she would be the one who needed to be told to calm down but considering the situation and the way Prem was acting she was going to have be the mature one in the conversation today.
Gayatri sighed at her son's behavior but continued, "Prem has obviously decided he wants to be with you and there isn't any way to get around the fact that you are carrying a Juneja heir now. Children should have a stable home environment and I'm not going to disrupt that...we're bonded by blood...regardless of how I feel about the situation."
"So, you'll disown me but not my kid, huh?" Prem snickered almost in disbelief. "Well, I'm the child's father and I have a say in who he or she is allowed to talk to."
"And I'm the child's mother and I also have a say," Heer objected sternly looking at Prem.
"Heer..." Prem protested.
"I told you I want your Mother to have a relationship with our child," Heer reminded. "Your issues...our issues are separate...it isn't right to punish someone who is innocent in all of this." Gayatri watched on in surprise that Heer was defending her position.
"But Heer, you're not being treated fairly." Prem said.
"You promised me," Heer replied.
Prem chewed on his inner cheek and then dejectedly agreed, "Okay, fine."
Heer gave a small smile, "Thank you." She then addressed Gayatri, "I know we still have issues...but I don't want that to come in the way of your relationship with your grandchild. I want the child to receive all the love it deserves from both sides of the family."
Gayatri couldn't help but feel a sense of respect for the way Heer was handling things. She gently looked at the two people sitting in front of her and mused that appearance wise they looked like a couple. "Well, I think I'll take my leave now."
Prem reminded silent while his mother got up from the table. Heer nudged him to at least say something. He shifted his eyes away from the menu and stoically said, "Bye."
"Watch what you eat and listen to what the doctor tells you to do...I don't want my grandchild to have any issues because you're not properly doing what you're supposed to be doing," Gayatri instructed. Prem jerked a bit at the comment while Heer squeezed his arm reminding him to remain calm. Despite the rather curt tone Heer understood the underlying message was really one of concern.
"Auntie, if you have some time next week...my Mom and I will be looking at garlands and other arrangements..." Heer invited. Gayatri stared at her in mild surprise. "You said you don't know anything about me or my family," Heer explained. "If you want to come...you can...it's up to you..."
"I'll see if I can fit it into my schedule," Gayatri simply replied and then left.
"Heer are you sure about this?" Prem asked.
"This relationship has to start somewhere...she made the effort to say she wants to be included in her grandchild's life and at least she acknowledged that we are getting married. She hasn't said no or made a big fuss," Heer replied. "Look, we can't act like we don't know each other or not talk to each other in front of our kid...it's just an effort to keep things as normal as we can."
Prem sighed, "Okay..." Heer affectionately gave him a kiss on the cheek causing him to break out in a smile. "So, should we order lunch?"
"Let's do. I'm starving," Heer said cheerily looking at the menu. "Everything looks good. Can I order two things?"
"Already eating for two..." Prem chuckled and placed his arm around her shoulder. Heer leaned into his embrace and grinned as he placed a loving kiss on her forehead.
Teji Maan eyed the woman sitting next to her daughter. She seemed ordinary enough nothing that radiated snobbery or arrogance in her manners despite the wealth she possessed. Under any normal situation she mused that she probably would have been friends with her. But knowing that she was the soul factor for causing her daughter's heartache Teji couldn't help but harbor unpleasant feelings towards the woman.
Gayatri watched silently as the mother and daughter pair interacted with one another as they looked at the items the florist had to offer. The bond between them was strong and she could feel how deep their relationship was with each other. She felt awkward in their presence and wondered why she even agreed to come in the first place. It was obvious that they knew what they were doing and considering the way her relationship was with Prem and Heer it was a bit strange for her to even be there. A sense of loneliness crept into her heart as she began to recall the times she used to share with her son. She knew the situation between them was her own doing but her pride wasn't ready to let her forgive or outwardly admit her own mistake. "So, what do you think? A or B?" Heer suddenly asked. Gayatri glanced at the catalog surprised yet slightly thankful for her for asking for her input on something that she had yet to openly consent to. "B looks nice. But it really is up to your preference," Gayatri replied.
Heer smiled, "Well, that's a vote for B across the board."
"All right so that will be B for the flower stands," the store owner replied jotting down the selection on a notepad.
The next couple of minutes the three women discussed rather cooperatively what other flower arrangements should be used for the ceremony and the reception hall. Things were going well and Heer was feeling hopeful that relations would improve. Unfortunately, the peaceful atmosphere soon turned sour as they began discussing the wedding garlands. Her mother was favoring one set while Gayatri was favoring another.
"I think this one looks more complementary," Teji said point to the first set of marigolds.
"I prefer these...they look more elegant," Gayatri replied selecting another garland set design from the other catalogue. "These will match better and stand out more."
"Are you saying I don't know what is elegant?" Teji abruptly asked. Heer's eyes widen at her mother's sudden curt remark. Teji had been keeping her mouth quiet when they were selecting the other items as Gayatri seemed to always put her input in first. Some of her choices she agreed with but there were some she felt otherwise. Her daughter seemed to go along with her future mother-in-law preferences for the sake of pleasing her. Teji didn't like seeing her daughter compromise on items that she didn't fully appreciate. What irked her even more was the fact that Gayatri had yet to even bless the couple and here she was pushing her input on items for the wedding ceremony.
"Don't place words in my mouth that I have not said," Gayatri answered.
"I fail to understand why you are even interested in all of this. Are you simply here to make sure your reputation isn't ruined by making sure everything looks good at the wedding?" Teji probed.
"I'm here because your daughter invited me. If I had known you were going to insult me like this then I would have never come," Gayatri replied angrily.
"Insult? I'm only asking for the truth. You can't even bless your own son because of your own pride...and why do you hate my daughter so much? She's done nothing to you. She's only given everything to your son. Are you so blind that you can't see that they love each other?" Teji ranted. Heer pulled on her mother's arm trying to calm her down. She was feeling utterly embarrassed by this personal argument in front of the store owner. "Mom..." Heer hissed. Teji ignored her daughter and continued. "I wasn't too thrilled at the prospect either at first...your son had a lot to make up for. He's behavior was unacceptable..."
"Do not speak ill of him," Gayatri flared.
"It's the truth and even he admits to it. But my daughter forgave him and took him back and now they're getting married...if that's not love then you tell me what is? Oh, but wait you don't understand what love is...how could you? You forced your only son to give up the one love of his life so you could be happy...for you he was willing to marry some other girl that he didn't even love." Teji said.
"I don't have to sit here and listen to all of this nonsense," Gayatri sternly replied as she got up. She then looked at Heer, "Thank you for letting me find out more about your family...it is quite obvious you lack tact---"
"Don't you dare say anything bad about her," Teji said cutting her off. "Those words came from my mouth. She has been nothing but gracious in your presence...going along with everything you've picked because she wants to somehow please you. I'm the one that has no tact."
"Well, you know what they say like mother like daughter," Gayatri countered.
Heer was at a total loss for words at what was occurring in front of her. She was feeling dizzy with all the bickering going on between the two mothers. She stood up trying to stop Gayatri, "Auntie, I apologize for this---"
"Heer, you don't have to apologize to that ungrateful woman," Teji ordered.
"Ungrateful?" Gayatri repeated in shock. "Listen here, I haven't said a single word against you and you continue to attack me...what does that make you?"
"Please Auntie," Heer pleaded.
Gayatri twisted her arm away from Heer's grasp. "What will you do to make this any better? Your mother continues to insult me. I've had enough of this drama for one day, thank you very much."
"Yes, enough...I agree...the door is that way," Teji pointed.
"Mom..." Heer said through gritted teeth. "Stop this."
"I'll stop. There is no relation. Prem has no relation with her and I don't see why we have to have any relation with her either," Teji replied.
"I could care less. I haven't even received a formal invitation," Gayatri replied. "So you don't have to worry about a thing."
The store owner looked up in alarm as she sensed something was about to happen. "Please stop the both of..." Heer said tittering a bit unable to finish her sentence. "Heer!" Teji cried as she caught her before she hit the ground. Gayatri turned around in great concern. "This is all your fault," she said as she helped Teji place Heer in the chair.
"My fault?" Teji repeated.
"You're the one who started all of this...she probably got stressed from us arguing and that's why she fainted," Gayatri replied with irritation.
"Why are you still here I thought you were leaving?" Teji asked heatedly.
"There is no way I'm leaving...she's carrying my grandchild," Gayatri replied.

Prem walked as fast as he could to the room the emergency room receptionist had given him. He was in complete panic the minute his secretary delivered the message that Heer was in the hospital after his morning meeting. He knew right away who had caused the situation and he was simmering inside. As he made his way to the room he nearly ran into someone who was coming from the other direction taking the same turn into the hallway. "I'm sorry. Please excuse me," Prem replied.
"Prem? Prem Juneja?" the man said with surprise.
"Vishal? What are you doing here?" Prem asked.
"I work here," Vishal joked pointing to his stethoscope.
"I can see that," Prem replied with a slight chuckle. "I thought you were practicing in Chicago."
"I was and then my parents and my in-laws decided to move here about two years ago. And then Anjali got pregnant and well the parents convinced us to move here so they could help us take care of our little girl," Vishal explained.
"What you have a baby girl? Oh man, I have to keep in better touch," Prem said.
"I know you like dropped off the face of the earth," Vishal replied. "You're not still with Roshni are you?"
Prem shook his head. "No, I'm not thank goodness. It's a long story. But I really don't have much time to talk right now."
Vishal nodded in understanding, "Right, I'm actually on my way to see a patient of mine. You heading in this direction too?"
"Yeah," Prem replied as they started walking. "Room 12."
"No way. I'm the doctor for the patient in room 12," Vishal said in disbelief.
"Heer Maan?" Prem asked.
"Don't worry she's fine. How do you two know each other?" Vishal asked.
"She's my fiance," Prem replied as he opened the door. Vishal broke out into a wide smile and patted him on the back while Prem gave a perplexed glanced at his friend.
"So Ms. Maan we meet again," Vishal greeted warmly. He then checked her I.V. and asked, "You feeling better?"
"Yes, Dr. Gupta," Heer replied.
"Your blood pressure was high again. Experiencing any stress lately?" Vishal asked. He noticed the brief glances she gave to the two elder women in the room before she looked back at him. Realizing the situation he simply replied. "Try to take it easy and don't let things bog you down. If you need to...take a walk outside and get some fresh air...that usually tends to calm things down a bit. Don't worry the baby's fine. So everyone can relax now." Vishal then looked at Prem. "You sir, are in charge of taking care of her. I really don't want to see her back in the hospital for the third time for fainting. I say another fifteen minutes and you can take her home." Everyone in the room stared as Vishal and Prem exchanged numbers. "Anjali is so going to demand you to come and have dinner with us."
"Definitely, it would nice to catch up," Prem replied with a smile.
"You can see our little munchkin...practice your fathering skills," Vishal laughed and patted him on the back, "Congrats man...on becoming a Dad and getting engaged." He then politely nodded his head towards the elder women before addressing Heer, "Anjali and I will whip him into shape and get him ready for fatherhood...so you don't have to worry about a thing. I'll be seeing you soon. Take Care."
"Buddy of mine when I was working in Chicago," Prem explained to everyone in the room once Vishal had left.
"Thank goodness everything is okay," Teji sighed in relief.
"Well, you heard what the doctor said no stress..." Gayatri said.
"That's right...you can go now...everything is fine with your grandchild...that's the most important thing, right?" Teji sarcastically remarked.
Gayatri gave her a hard stare, "You need to stop stressing your daughter out by arguing with people over silly little things."
"Silly little things...her wedding is not a silly little thing, her health is not a silly little thing, and my grandchild is not a silly little thing," Teji sternly replied.
"There you go again putting words in my mouth that I didn't say," Gayatri said with frustration.
Heer stared at the ceiling sighing that they were at it again. They had been arguing none stop since she woke up and had only paused when Prem and the doctor walked in. Prem was getting extremely irritated especially since the doctor had specifically told them to keep her stress free. He really didn't know what was going on or why they were arguing in the first place but he had to stop them. "That's enough," Prem said loudly in a commanding tone. The two mothers immediately stopped and looked at him. "Mom, I'm sorry...Heer and the baby can't take this right now. Could you please?" Gayatri watched on in stunned silence that Prem was addressing Teji as his mother and speaking to her first in a warm tone. Teji understood his meaning and walked outside. Prem then turned his attention to Gayatri and in more curt tone said, "I don't know what you did but just please leave." Gayatri could see the anger burning in his eyes and felt it was utterly unfair that she was constantly being labeled as the evil mother-in-law. Gayatri glanced over at Heer, "Listen to what the doc---" but wasn't able to finish her sentence as Prem cut her off, "We know what the doctor said...you don't have to tell us again...don't worry your grandchild will be just fine." Heer looked on rather apologetically towards the woman as she silently exited the room.
"Prem, it was my Mom's fault," Heer reported. "She started the whole thing by arguing over the wedding garlands at the florist."
"I'm sure she was provoked," Prem replied.
"No, she wasn't. I really did like the items your Mom picked out. I don't know what possessed my Mom to start arguing," Heer explained. "And the wedding garlands...I didn't even like either of their choices and was going to pick something else..."
Prem nodded his head. "Okay, let's not talk about this right now," he replied trying to hush her. "I don't want you stressing over this." He gently held her hand in his and leaned onto the bed. "I was so worried when I got the message you were in the hospital." He kissed her hand, "If anything were to happen to you and the baby I don't know what I would do..."
Heer caressed his cheek, "Prem, I'm fine. The baby's fine."
"I'm going to ask Meher to come and help you with some things," Prem said.
"She's busy enough with her own work. Don't bother her," Heer replied.
"She's like my sister...she said she'll always make time for me whenever I need help. Just for the time being until things calm down a bit," Prem said. "Okay?" Heer relented by nodding her head. Prem smiled and kissed her forehead. He was surprised to feel a tug on his tie pulling him downward. He grinned knowing what she wanted and kissed her lips. Heer giggled as she felt him try to lay on the bed with her, "Prem, where in the hospital..." She placed her hands on his chest trying to keep him off. "You're the one that started this," he whispered against her lips. "What if a nurse comes in?" Heer asked between kisses. "He said we have fifteen minutes," Prem replied mischievously. "Let's just enjoy for fifteen." Heer grinned and scooted over to give him some room. She gently played with his hair as they kissed; their bodies snuggled closely together enjoying the intimate affection they were showering each other with. They both froze when they heard a masculine cough. Heer immediately pushed Prem to the side, "I told you," she hissed feeling completely embarrassed at being caught. Prem gave an apologetic look as he struggled to quickly get off the bed. Vishal stood there with a knowing smirk, "That explains a lot...um, sorry to interrupt but someone stopped by unexpectedly today."
A woman with wheatish complexion and shoulder length hair stood next to Vishal and gently grinned, "Well, at least you are finally living up to your name. Good thing Saloni is playing at the nurse's station. Otherwise I'd have to have the birds and the bees talk a lot earlier than I planned. "
Prem sheepishly grinned and rubbed the back of his head. "Um, sorry. Oh, this is Heer my fiance."
"Hi, nice to meet you. I'm Anjali," she greeted.
Heer shyly smiled her cheeks a light pink as she sat up and shook her hand. "Nice to meet you too."
"Excuse me for speaking so frankly," Anjali smiled and then turned to Prem. "Thank you for finally growing a brain...and getting rid of that other one. Now, I want to know your whole story...how did you two meet?"
Prem chuckled slightly, "You haven't changed much have you even after having a kid? I would have thought you would have at least mellowed a bit."
"Mellowed? Me, never," Anjali smiled.
"Saloni has only made her worse," Vishal joked. His wife turned around and gave him a playfully annoyed glare. "What to do my daughter keeps me on my toes," Anjali replied. "And don't deflect my question Mr. Juneja."
Prem glanced at Heer wondering what would be the best way to answer this question. "We use to date in college...needless to say things didn't exactly work out. And then four years later we just bumped into each other and well, as they say the rest is history," Heer explained.
Anjali caught the eye exchange between the two and knew there was probably a little more to the story but decided not to press the issues considering the fact that they were in public and Heer hardly knew her and Vishal. "Ah, a love rekindle kind of story? So romantic," Anjali squealed dreamily. Just then the door opened, a nurse walked in carrying a precocious little girl not more than 10 months old. She held tightly onto a lollipop as if her life depended on it. The minute she saw her parents she grinned widely and immediately reached her arms out hoping to be taken by one of them. "She was starting to miss her parents...had to give her the lollipop to calm her down. Don't think you'll be able to pry it out of her hands any time soon. Sorry," the nurse explained.
Vishal took his daughter into his arms, "It's okay Jackie. Totally understand you don't know how many times she's gotten her hands on my stethoscope. I think a lollipop will do just fine. Thanks for babysitting her for us." Saloni giggled and waved bye to the nurse before inspecting the room around her. Her eyes looked on curiously at the lights above her and then glided towards the backlights behind the hospital bed. She gave a tiny smile at Heer and then stared at Prem.
"I think we're in trouble now...she's discovered her first boy," Anjali said teasing her husband as little Saloni reached her hands out towards Prem.
"She normally doesn't do this. She tends to shy away from men even family members," Vishal explained. "All right Prem you get the honors."
"What? You want me to hold her?" Prem asked shaking his head in panic.
"You're going to have to learn sooner or later," Vishal smirked.
Heer just laughed along with Anjali at the sight of Prem's panic stricken face. Vishal instructed him how to properly hold Saloni and then handed his daughter over. Prem stared at the tiny face facing him. He couldn't help but smile at the way she was looking at him. Saloni reached out with her hands and started smacking his face and then grabbed his chin curious at his stubble. "Okay, that hurts Uncle Prem when you do that...let's try not to do that..." he softly said. Saloni smiled in understanding and gave him a tiny kiss on the cheek as an apology.
"Look at that a natural," Vishal teased. "Now you don't have to worry about a thing Heer. Just let him take care of the kids for you."
"I would say you need to worry about my daughter taking your fiance away," Anjali joked.
"She can have him," Heer replied. "He's a bit of a hand full."
"Is that so?" Prem asked. "Okay, fine Saloni and I will just leave then." He smiled at Saloni and then instructed by pointing to his other cheek, "How about a kiss here?" The little girl giggled and kissed his other cheek happily. She then looked over at Heer and stretched her arms out. Prem carefully handed her over. Heer placed Saloni on her lap and smiled gently at the little girl who was studying her face. She couldn't help but feel a sense of wonderment that eight months from now someone just like Saloni would be in her arms. The joy and pride that Vishal and Anjali were exhibiting would be the same emotions that she and Prem would be showing. Heer tenderly hugged Saloni and gave her a tiny kiss on the cheek. "You're so adorable," she complimented. Saloni giggled and handed over her lollipop to Heer. "Really, for me?" Heer sweetly asked. She nodded her head. "Why thank you." Prem looked on at the sight of Heer talking to Saloni and felt his heart over flow with a strange paternal emotion. His eyes were met by Heers and they both exchanged a knowing glance.
Prem swallowed uncomfortably wondering what possessed him to even come to the place that he had been avoiding for so long. He stared down at the thick envelope in his hands and sighed. He was doing this for Heer because he knew how much it meant to her. He still couldn't fathom why she could be so understanding about the whole situation despite knowing the truth. He was beginning to have this feeling that Heer was just using the whole formality pretense to somehow get him to interact with his mother; and if by some chance he and his mother could reconcile maybe there wouldn't be so much tension between his mother and Heer. But he knew his mother wasn't the type to fall for that. Prem grumbled as he rang the doorbell again wondering if she was going to come to the door. The car was parked out front so he knew she was definitely at home. Just as Prem was about to give up and turn around the front door opened. Gayatri Juneja stood there stunned to see her son at her front door step. "Prem?"
**********************************************************
I'm struggling a bit with the way I want to depict Gayatri. I'm trying to show she's not completely bad but she has done a lot of questionable things.
So it's obvious the next part will be a big Prem and Gayatri confrontation...will things be resolved or things just only get worse from here?
Comments would be Greatly Appreciated 😃
