To wear or not to wear

Hi all,

First post here , be kind!

I'm 24 yrs old (female) and I will be travelling with my mum to India next week. We will be going to Jaipur, Agra, Kokata, New Delhi, Darjeeling and Rajasthan.

I am unclear on what I should be wearing whilst travelling in India. Given the temperature I was wondering whether it would be okay to wear a polo shirt and shorts (just above knee length). Many Indian college students I have spoken to online agree that it is fine (lots of college girls wear shorts apparently) however in my search on the internet, many past travelers advise to not wear shorts at all.

So I was just wondering what do you all think? Will I be harrased, will people just think I'm a dumb foreigner, will I get lots of looks of disgusy, will people not care either way etc?

Also I am not looking to wear shorts at night, just during the day.

Cheers,

Kat.

just wear pants. Why would you want to take the chance of being harassed?

Are you a "foreigner" or a "foreigner of Indian/Desi origin"? From you writing you seemed to be a desi. 😆

We are almost in Nov so you'll do fine with polo shirt + shorts except in Darjeeling where you'll need warm clothes. In all places you mentioned (except Darjeeling) max temp will be =< 30C.

And doesn't matter what you wear, some people will still give you stares. 😆

BTW if you are traveling with accomplice(s) then nothing to worry about reactions you may get from some but if you're traveling alone then would recommend trousers.

😆😆😆😆 that is so true
Think it might be chilly in Nov in that part of the country, so best bet would be jeans and polo

There is already a nip in the air in the northern parts of India ! The mercury level is expected to dip further. Afternoons are pleasant ,however longer dresses would be advisable considering the advent of winter and the protection afforded against insect bites .
A few traditional dresses would also come in handy due to the festive season .
The places you mentioned are used to having a lot of tourists at this time of the year. Shorts during sight seeing in the day time should pose no problem other than the insect bites in some of the places ! The mosquito bites could be nasty as well as dangerous .Its safer to travel in group or at least with someone you know well. If you do not get bothered by people staring , you should be fine .
Hope you enjoy your visit to India and have a great time, Kat !

Hi Kat,
Welcome to India.
Kat, you'll not be harrassed for wearing any type of clothes, as long as you are in a group when you travel late at night.
And whatever 'harrassment' happens, it happens even to people who wear the usual Indian style clothes too. Nothing to do with you being a foreigner. And I know it happens out of India too. I have had some bad experiences in London while I travelled by the tube once during the night. So harrassment is nothing confined to India alone.
You'll not be harrassed for wearing shorts, you'll probably just invite some stares. And that you will even if you wear a Saree. 😆 No one will think you are 'dumb', ok? Someone has misled you.
Just relax, Kat...wear what you are comfortable in. If you are so conscious about your clothing, I would suggest you wear jeans and t-shirts.
Edit :If you are travelling to Darjeeling next week, do carry warm clothes.

BTW, the title of this topic "to wear or not to wear" threw me off somewhat 😃
Shouldn't it have been "what to wear " instead ? 😆
