its simple, when murkiyaan or harkatein are added and makes songs sounds good its better otherwise regarded as unnecessary. singers should think betore whether the additon they are making songs good or adding unnecessary.

I think In reality a singer should be able to add all these to a bare bone composition. Singer's murkis will be either rejected or modified by the directors. There will be so many singers out there who can render impressively a well decorated song which is already rendered by another singer, but on their own nothing will come out.

I feel we should appreciate the fact that the contestants are trying to bring in their own touches to their songs.
I agree, some of the harkatein are not top-class, but you know what, this should be a learning experience for them.
To produce something in Indian music, one has to keep trying more and more innovative harkats. I commend all the contestants for trying to bring something of their own, and I am sure this will help them become excellent musicians in the future.
As Lataji always says, what's the point in singing someone else's song note for note? Of course, they can't create their own songs and sing them in the competition, but they should at least be allowed to use their creativity here.

Out of all the contestants, I must say that Kamal Khan is the one who always goes for one innovation or the other, and they are ALWAYS fabulous. Every time he is singing, I think to myself, with such immense creativity, he would have excelled as a classical vocalist, absolutely.

I think the contestants are taking these steps to prove themselves as singers. There's nothing wrong with it, but I do agree that some contestants do it more gracefully than others. Some contestants it seems like they are just showing off. (Not just talking about SRGMP 2010 now)

A good example is Kamal. I love the way that guy incorporates such melodic murkiyaans into his performances. For instance in Sajda, Chaiya Chaiya, and even in simple songs like Jabse Tere Naina. When done properly and technically, it blends in so well.

No offense, but in Nakul's previous performances he'd attempt to improvise a segment - but would only end up butchering it 😕😆
