I remember Shankar mahadevan saying these words when he came as a judge in the recently concluded chote ustaad.

He told the kids,

Choose the best song which suits your voice and you can execute well.

After all, it is a competition and you will be judged based on what you sing on that particular day.

This is not a stage show that you can get away with singing whatever you want.

Words to this effect.

How true SM !👏

Just one bad selection can throw you out of gear and the whole competition.😳

It applies to all singers and all competitions👏

Shankar was absolutely right but the song choice is done by Channel and mentors and the particpants are like slaves until they have some clout with the channel so they have to sing what the channel wants.

It is true that each singer has their own strong areas.
Unfortunately the contest here is about versatality so they have to be prepared to do all sorts of things, some of which are non singing too.
Shreya sang well but got voted out, could be party due to her inability to do drama.

^ I think you might be right, Summer-ji! Drama does help the audience remember you. Also, the channel people want to keep you in more too.

Yes, what Shankar had said is right!! I have heard the same thing being said by judges on music reality shows in Kerala - song selection is very important, and always select a song that suits your voice and your limits, and not something that exposes your weaknesses... 😃

Yes, the channel makes the final choice, but then they select the song from a list of preferred songs for the contestant. They do that just to make sure that the same song is not sung by another contestant.. They do the same for DID too, so that no two dancers dance for the same song on the show.. So if the contestant is smart enough to make a good list of song selections before giving it to the producers, there shouldnt be anything to worry about... 😃
