In my opinion, being a MD is a very tough job. Almost every renowned producer gets his songs done first before the first scene of a movie is ever shot. Sometimes, the same song is done 2/3 different ways by the MD. A classic perfectionist here is ARR who typically is almost never satisfied with his creation and gets into a "DO loop" to improve his product. Rumors have it that he ultimately is the final decision maker and even the Producers have not much say in the final product at all. In Taal, for example, Sukhwinder Singh had just sung the songs to be dubbed later by someone else. ARR tried others and finally decided to stick with SS and SS got his major break in the industry. MD's job is very intense. From a producer's standpoint it is very vital for the songs to do good as the entire movie's success depends on it.
The champ at this is Yash Choprajee who, like the rest of the producers, is very intense about his music. It is actuaaly his wife, Pam Chopra, who has the keen musical ear. RK,SLB and the list goes on have paid most attention to their MDs and we have seen the products of their intensity.

Let's not forget people like Guru Dutt who insisted that songs be 100% suited to the situation and he's arguably the best picturiser of songs. Same with Goldie Anand. Master of song picturisation. Goldie Anand and Dada Burman have given us gems of songs. Same with Shakti Samanta, BR Chopra, Raj Khosla, Raj Kapoor etc. Those days, each producers would heckle an MD till they got the best song for the situation. It's not like nowadays that gana banao, daal do. Then, they used to ponder over every single detail, keep in mind the hero and heroine, choose appropriate voices, appropriate raags, beats, etc. It is said that Naushad and SD would lock themselves up in their music rooms for days together till they got the perfect tune. Madan Mohan would keep singing classical taans at his recordings and would keep changing the tunes. Sajjad was never satisfied with any of his work and took 17 retakes for 'yeh hawa yeh raat'...well, Sajjad was a different character 😆 😆 😆 .

Then there were people like C.Ramachandra who could make up hit tunes in seconds. Same with RD. Roshan sahab would sit with the lyricists for hours to get the correct mood and feel...same with Naushad who got Shakeel Badayuni to re-write the classic 'pyar kiya to darna kya' a 105 times 😕 👏 .

They had no computers then. All the songs they composed was on the Harmonium or the Piano. Pancham would compose beats on the dashboard of his car. Anilda would take Mannada out on LONG drives and compose tunes while driving. SD would be in a foul mood until he got the right tune and would even wake singers or composers at 1 AM to record. Raj Kapoor would have a say in every song. Shammi Kapoor would sit with Rafi Sahab and decide each song the way it should be sung and picturised.

They used to take a lot of pain those days. ANd it showed in their compositions. Sadly, today music has become a business. 80 movies in an year, mostly stolen or rehashes of previous compositions. Still a hit.

And then there are people who give 1 soundtrack in a year
and those are unforgettable classics.

Its true, but today even ARR uses softwares to create music tunes.

In my opinion, it is very easy job, Your success depends upon
1. How many struggling MD's do you know(what was that AK/Manisha movie?)
2. How many young people are your friends? who are settled in foreign countries, who visit popular dance/music clubs?
3. What kind of remixing equipment do you have?
4. How many disc-CD changer do you have?

sorry one of those moods today 😉
