Reality show Bigg Boss4, being hosted by film star Salman Khan on Colors, the flagship Hindi general entertainment channel from Viacom18 Pvt. Ltd, has attracted a raft of advertisers including Vodafone Essar Ltd, which has won the presenting sponsorship rights for '30 crore.
A Colors executive confirmed Vodafone will be the main sponsor; there will also be seven associate sponsors.
Vodafone Essar's chief marketing officer Kumar Ramanathan did not comment on the size of the sponsorship deal, but said: "Bigg Boss is one of the most exciting TV shows ruling the airwaves. The show provides a multi-faceted platform for our brand. It's more than just spot value; it's all about getting involved with our consumers directly."
Given Salman Khan's popularity, with his recent movie Dabangg a box-office hit, sponsors are betting that the reality show's fourth edition will attract viewers.
Among the sponsors are LG Electronics India Pvt. Ltd, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt. Ltd and General Motors India Pvt. Ltd, which are spending '7 crore each to sponsor the show that logged an average television rating point (TRP) of 2.43 in the last season. TRP indicates the percentage of viewers watching a programme at a given time.
So, when Salman Khan personally ushers the contestants into the Bigg Boss house they will find not just home appliances by LG, but also bikes from Suzuki parked inside the house.
"It's too early to comment, but yes, our products have been woven as part of the script and will be used interestingly over the episodes," said Atul Gupta, vice-president, sales and marketing at Suzuki Motorcycle India.
Similarly, LG has its Infinia range of LED television sets, refrigerators and microwaves in the house.
"It's an important property for us and we have done a 360 marketing campaign across various platforms, including television, print, radio and outdoor," said Rajesh Iyer, director, marketing, Colors.
A colleague of Iyer's, who did not want to be identified, said the channel may make a modest profit on the show, with the cost between '70 crore and '75 crore and advertising revenue close to '100 crore.
Big-ticket shows tend to lose money, but they are imperative to attract viewers and rack up TRPs, says Anand Shah, a media analyst at Angel Broking Ltd. "Advertisers cannot ignore these properties and that explains why a clutch of players from sectors such as telecom, banking and finance, FMCG and autos latch on to them," he said.
