She's too young to play your mom: Age gaps in casting
July 31st, 2010 // by girlfriday

Posted ImagePosted Image

There's an interesting phenomenon these days where actresses are being cast in the role of Mom younger and younger. Not only that, but sometimes the age gap between Mom and Child is quite ridiculous, if you think about it. Jung Hye-young is no stranger to playing a mom, as she knocked it out of the park playing Iljimae's heartbroken mother in Return of Iljimae, barely 14 years older than Jung Il-woo. In Playful Kiss, she's now set to play opposite Kim Hyun-joong in a similar capacity, who is only 13 years her junior.

What's crazier is the age gap on the set of SBS's Giant, where Kim Suh-hyung (34) plays mother to Park Jin-hee (32). Now THAT's a little nuts.

Kim Suh-hyung said, "This is the first time I'm playing the mother of an adult character, so it feels a little strange, but I knew it would be a great acting opportunity." It's pretty gracious of her, considering they're the age of friends or sisters, certainly not mother-daughter.

Their characters have yet to cross paths on the show, so as of now they aren't sharing the same screen, but they will in due time, and the meeting should be epic, on many levels.

In Playful Kiss, Jung Hye-young (37) will be playing Mom to Kim Hyun-joong (24), and she worries about portraying the relationship realistically. She's a young mom herself, besides being a standout actress, so I don't think she'll be lacking any believability, regardless of the age gap.

The producers said of Jung, "Her character is a lovely, loving mom who believes in the power of affirmation. Jung Hye-young will be a cute mom who makes us forget about her age gap with Kim Hyun-joong."

Funny, but that statement makes it sound like she'll play even younger, like a friend-mom, which I'm fine with. I love a Gilmore-girls-esque rapport. Although you need a Rory to hold her own in that sort of dynamic. Ahem. No comment.

Over on the set of MBC's Kim Suro, Bae Jong-ok (46) plays Queen Mother to Ji Sung (33), another 13-year age gap. But that's not even the half of it. In 2005's Beating Heart, they played a ROMANTIC COUPLE. From lover to mother? That's pretty mind-blowing, if you ask me.

Bae Jong-ok said, "Playing Ji Sung's girlfriend, to playing his mother, made me feel my age." But Bae does undergo a strong makeup transformation for the role, and she, again, is an amazing actress. So while it must feel weird for her, I have no doubt she conveys both quite convincingly.

On SBS's morning drama Plucky Girl, Lee Yuri (28) plays Mom to Hong In-young (25)! Somehow their 3-year age gap is even more unbelievable, because both actresses are in their twenties. I, for one, can't tell who in the picture below is supposed to be the mom and who's the daughter.

Granted, Lee's character remarries and thus Hong In-young becomes her step-daughter, but she still calls her "Mom" on the show. Hong said, "In the drama our characters are four years apart. But in reality that's ridiculous. I know they say age is just a number, but if it were my real life, that would be really strange."

Well, at least this age gap is a plot point, and an intentional dramatic twist on the stepmother-daughter relationship. Otherwise who'd believe it?

This growing trend has some audiences doubting the believability of such casting choices, and wondering if there's such a dearth of actresses out there. Personally, I don't think the general trend is that crazy, given that the 30-something single girl is only lately becoming a viable option, in the last few years. Before, actresses had to go straight from twenty-something maiden to 30-something ajumma. Now there's more of a range, and it isn't a new thing for actors to be cast off-age. Although playing a guy's mom after playing his girlfriend is…a little squicky. I don't envy her.

Eyes are turned towards Kim Suh-hyung (Giant) and Jung Hye-young (Playful Kiss) to see how they meet the "Mom Challenge." My guess? They'll score home runs. You don't get to be a seasoned actress for nothing.

Multi-talented Artists Now at the Turn of Times

"I've tried to catch two rabbits, but failed," a Korean proverb which means to do two things at one time is difficult to achieve.

Despite this, the entertainment industry has gained people who manage to "catch more than two rabbits", they are called "multi-talented artists" who possess talents in many aspects, be it singing, dancing, acting, to the extent there is nothing they cannot do. Talking about "multi-talented artists", one will usually think of Uhm Jung Hwa, Lim Chang-Jung, who initiated a new era of such versatile artists. Other than their origin as solo singers, their excellent performance can also be seen in films and television shows.

Kim Hyun Joong is also an artist who reminds us of such "multi-talented artist", the popular Leader of SS501 starred in the popular TV series KBS2TV "Boys over Flowers" last year as JiHoo sunbae with a unrequited love for the heroine which showcased his potential as an actor. He will be starring as the male lead in the TV adaptation of the popular Japanese manga series, "Naughty Kiss," on MBC.

Kim Hyun Joong is also a shining star in the arena of variety shows, having starred in a wide range of variety shows which reveal the charisma of his self-confidence; his unique charm when acting as a make-believe couple with Hwang Bo in the first season of MBC's 'We got married" touched the hearts of many fans.

    Interview with actress Jung So-min

Korean actress Jung So-min [Chae Ki-won/10Asia]
My name is Jung So-min. My friends and I had a contest to pick out my stage name but I myself chose the name.
I was born on March 16, 1989. I am a junior at the Korea National University of Arts majoring in acting but I'm currently taking a semester off.
My family consists of my mom, dad and my little brother who is a senior in high school. I get into fights with my brother but they don't last for more than five minutes. We hang out a lot because I really like him and I'm glad he doesn't think I'm annoying. (laugh)
I learned ballet from elementary school until middle school. I had to quit because my parents were against it and I started to learn Korean traditional dance when I was in high school. If I continued to dance I probably would have done work relating to visiting other countries to spread the Korean traditional dance.
When I was a senior in high school, my dad didn't know that when I took my college entrance exam I changed my major to acting. I told him after I was accepted and he was furious. I think my dad began to change his mind when he received the tuition bill for my college and saw that it was zero won because of my scholarship. (laugh) I think that was when he began to trust me.
However, my grades after entering school were...We have a saying in our school 'Don't think about graduating if you haven't been on academic probation at least twice.' It's because we are assigned a lot of work and the schedule is tight. It was hard to maintain my grades while working really hard and sleeping only three or four hours a day.
This year for the school play, I was cast to play the role of Hermia for Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and it was quite sad because I had to take a semester off to shoot "Bad Boy." There aren't that many opportunities to be in a traditional play.
When I was still in school I really liked physical education. I remember that I won an award in the long run against other students at school and I'm also good at physical fighting.
I actually like to take part in sports rather than watch them. I was the only girl who took part in the soccer match during the "Bad Boy" rally. I'm better in baseball than other girls and actor Kim Jae-wook told that my pose is similar to that of a major league baseball player. (laugh)
I've only seen actor Kim Nam-gil on television and it was hard to approach him at first because he seemed so serious but after getting to know him, we joked around a lot.
The yacht scene during the first half of "Bad Boy" was shot during March. So it was really cold and after the cameras went off I was shaking because I was wearing just a dress.
There are people who say I look younger than my age and others say that I'm very grown-up like. Veteran actress Kim Hae-ok, who plays my mom in "Bad Boy," said I'm like a high school student wearing regular clothes and kept saying "You're like a 15-year-old!" (laugh)
My first paid gig was a commercial for SK Telecom (a telecommunication company in Korea). I gave the entire paycheck to my mom but she accepted it without even blinking an eye. She said "Don't think that you can make things up to me with this. You don't know how much money I spent on you!" (laugh) Of course I still get an allowance.
When I get my allowance all I do is eat. (laugh) I also like to buy things for others. When I have the money I spend it and buy things thinking "So and so will like this!"
I try to watch a play at least once a week or every other week. My managers and I bawled after we watched the play "The Most Beautiful Goodbye" which was originally written by writer Noh Hee-kyung. Afterwards when I went home, I told my mom that I would do my best. (laugh)
I am also interested in musicals. I began to learn to sing after my college entrance exam but unfortunately I'm not gifted in it. I thought if I practiced I would get better but if I had to evaluate myself objectively? I don't see it happening. (laugh)
My favorite movie genre is thrillers and reasoning movies where you have to use your brain. I became interested in thrillers because of the movie "Identity." I also enjoyed watching "Our Town." I don't really like action movies but I like films that have action and create tension like "Taken."
The thing that I want to do the most is to get a florist license. I don't have any skills in art but I like flowers and matching them with different colors. When I act or dance my actions are shown directly but I really want to learn how to create a different feeling with these pieces. However, the tuition fee is a bit too expensive...

[article] The reason why Jangki is still too early to give up fighting.

    *EDIT*
A mistake in 2nd last paragraph. Supposed to be Jung Somin and not Oh Hani
    Pardon the slight error ^^

3.4%, Playful Kiss, the reason why it's still early to give up yet

MBC Wed-Thurs drama Playful Kiss recorded ratings of 3.4% (09 Sept, #4). This was lower by 0.1% than #3 broadcasted on 8 September with 3.5%. A few of the broadcasting personnel expressed their thoughts on Playful Kiss who is facing the worst situation, "It isn't impossible yet that the drama will not be revived".

However, it is still too early to think about giving up. Since only 4 episodes have been aired so far, there are many guesses throughout here and there that there will be possibility of a rise in ratings soon.

Solid storyline... KimHyunJoong-JungSoMin Loveline Anticipation UP

The first possibility would be that Baek Seungjo (Kim Hyunjoong) and Oh Hani (Jung Somin)'s loveline is beginning to slowly develop itself. Oh Hani has been living in shame since sending her self-penned love letter to Baek Seungjo. Baek Seungjo whom, disregards Oh Hani in every single circumstance, has begun to slowly open his heart up to Oh Hani, as was seen in the episode aired on 9 September.

Baek Seungjo who has been so arrogant throughout is slowly beginning to change. Because of that, Baek Seungjo and Oh Hani's love story that will soon spread its wings is grabbing the attention of audiences.

-next paragraph omit, introduction of drama-

Drama Boys over Flowers had similarly faced the same situation whereby it was facing a tough battle in the beginning against MBC drama 'Eaden of East', yet in the end it achieved huge success with its increasing ratings.

The hardwork of the actors.. Audiences Are Aware

The 2nd possibility is because the good acting by the young actors and the vetarans. In particular veterans Jung Hyeyoung, Kang Namgil etc, they show their passion for acting. Especially where this drama is so manhwa-like, there will bound to be many overly-exaggerated cases.
Because of that, this kind of drama style is not easy for the vetarans to portray for the first time. However, the veterans managed to portray their characters without any trace of awkwardness. Not forgetting that protagonists Kim Hyunjoong, Jung Somin etc, these young actors display acting skills that illuminate on itself, too.

Of course, the hard work of these young actors Kim Hyunjoong and Jung Somin is very much obvious. Kim HyunJoong has now upgraded his acting from the perfect yet warm guy Yoon Jihoo into the tough yet perfect guy Baek Seungjo. As to how Kim Hyunjoong will digest his character Baek Seungjo slowly falling for Oh Hani, everyone is highly curious about that.

Indeed, Jung Somin who only had one work 'Bad guy' managed to digest her Oh Hani character so smoothly as she got chosen for the role. These guys worked really hard for their characters. A related drama personnel mentioned, "Kim Hyunjoong & JUNG SO MIN never left their hands away from the scripts, and is always rehearsing for them. Especially the feeling to be put forth for the character, they really put in much meticulousness and thoughts as they act it out vividly".

Though the drama records low ratings as at 3.4%, but this is only the 4th episode. Looking at the rather high ratings this drama rakes in for its re-broadcasts, it is not difficult to spot the possibility whereby audiences will soon move their attention to it.

Hey people! I was going stir crazy waiting for PK to air on Wednesday XD. So I went and watched "They Kiss Again" on YT. And am sorry for the fans but I feel the Korean version is much better.

In the T version, XQ is so clingy, obsessed, whiny, pig headed and stupid. She is unable to even think for herself. She depends on ZS for every little thing. It's really exhausting, seeing her talk and think about him ALL the time! She even does that with her friends! She ONLY and Always wants to discuss him and how great and handsome he is with EVERYONE. And she cried at the drop of the hat. There was this scene..accident wala..she helps the guy and his blood is all over her. And instead of explaining to a terrified ZS that she is fine, madam is blubbering all over him about how she wanted to come early but couldn't, there were so many obstacles. Though she does explain to him about the blood and accident between sobs *rolls eyes* I seriously wanted to brain her with something. I loved the actress Ariel Lin but god the character of XQ annoyed me no end. ZS is no better...he annoyed me too at time(He is seriously flawed too) but mostly I wanted to give him a hug for tolerating and LOVING XQ even with all her flaws.

Whew..ok..am soo looking forward to epi 5 and 6 😍 I saw the preview...the supermarket scene made me laugh out loud 🤣
