She has starred in the television movies Another Cinderella Story and Princess Protection Program. In 2010, Gomez made her theatrical film debut as Beatrice "Beezus" Quimby in Ramona and Beezus.
Before Disney, she had one of the kid roles on Barney & Friends. Early life and education
Gomez was born in Grand Prairie, Texas[1] to Ricardo Gomez and former stage actress Mandy Teefey (ne Cornett).[5][6] Her father is Mexican American and her mother is of half Italian descent.[7][8] Her birth parents divorced when she was five years old, and she was raised as an only child by her working mother.[5][9] In 2006, Mandy remarried Brian Teefey.[10] She is named after Tejano singer Selena.[11] In a 2009 interview with People, Gomez mentioned that she developed an early interest in acting from watching her mother prepare for and act in theater productions.[9] She earned a high school diploma through homeschooling in May 2010
Acting career

Gomez began her acting career at age seven, playing Gianna on Barney & Friends. She said that she learned "everything" about how to act while on the show. Season 7 of Barney & Friends, when Selena Gomez was on the show, was held up for some time. Because of this, the episodes featuring Gomez did not air until she was in 5th grade. This resulted in some mild controversy/confusion as to whether she was on Barney in the 5th grade or the 1st grade.[13] She later had minor roles in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over and the TV film Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial By Fire. In 2004, Gomez was discovered by the Disney Channel in a nation wide scouting.[14] Gomez appeared as a guest star on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and had a guest appearance â that later turned into a recurring role â on Hannah Montana from season's two to three. In early 2007 Gomez was cast in the Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place as one of the three main characters, Alex Russo.
In 2008, Gomez appeared in Another Cinderella Story, the direct-to-DVD sequel to the 2004 Hilary Duff film, opposite Drew Seeley. In 2009, Gomez did a guest appearance as herself in one episode, of Lovato's Disney Channel television show Sonny With a Chance, entitled "Battle of The Network Stars". Gomez, along with two cast members of Wizards of Waverly Place appeared in a television three-way cross-over episode with Hannah Montana and The Suite Life on Deck, entitled Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana. In February 2009, Gomez signed on to star as one of the two female leads in Ramona and Beezus, a film adaption of the children's novel series by Beverly Cleary.[18][19] In March, 2010, Variety reported that Gomez was set to star as one of the three lead roles in Monte Carlo.[20]

In 2008, Gomez recorded a cover of "Cruella de Vil" -which included a music video for â for the compilation album DisneyMania 6. Gomez recorded three songs for the Another Cinderella Story soundtrack, which Gomez appears in. Gomez also recorded "Fly to Your Heart" for the 2008 animated film Tinker Bell. In July 2008 â before Gomez' sixteenth birthday, she signed a recording deal with Hollywood Records, a music label owned by Disney.[21] In 2009, Gomez recorded "One and the Same" for Princess Protection Program as a duet with Lovato â they both appear in the film.[22] Gomez recorded four songs, one of which was a cover, for the Wizards of Waverly Place soundtrack, only one single (Magic) from the album was released. Gomez was involved in the UR Votes Count campaign which helped encourage teenagers to learn more about 2008 Presidential candidates (Barack Obama and John McCain).[25] In October 2008, Gomez participated in St. Jude's Children's Hospital "Runway For Life" benefit.[26] Gomez is a spokesperson for Borden Milk; she is featured in the campaign's print and television ads.[27] She is the ambassador of DoSomething.org after being involved with the charity Island Dog, which help dogs in Puerto Rico.[28] She got involved while filming Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie in Puerto Rico.[29] Gomez is a spokesperson for State Farm Insurance, and is featured in their TV commercials; which air on the Disney Channel, to raise awareness of being a safe driver.[30] Gomez is also involved with the charity RAISE Hope For Congo, the charity helps raise awareness about the violence against Congolese women, in the Congo.[31]
Gomez is involved in Disney's Friends for Change, an organization which promotes "environmently-friendly behavior", and appears in its public service announcements to raise awareness for the cause on the Disney Channel.[32] Gomez, Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, and the Jonas Brothers recorded "Send It On", a charity single which serves as the theme song for Disney's Friends for Change in 2009. The song debuted on the Hot 100 at number twenty.[33][34] Disney's Friends For Change will direct all of its proceeds from "Send it On" to environmental charities to the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund.[33] On October 6, 2009, Gomez made a surprise visit to a Los Angeles elementary school as part of the "A Day Made Better" program that was sponsored by OfficeMax.[35] During her visit, Gomez gave the school an award, and gave them $1,000 worth of school supplies. UNICEF
In October 2008, Gomez was named UNICEF's spokesperson for the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign, which encouraged children to raise money on Halloween to help children around the world.[37] She said that she was "extremely excited" to "encourage other kids to make a difference in the world."[37]
In August 2009, a 17-year-old Gomez became the youngest UNICEF ambassador ever, passing fellow songstress Hayley Westenra, who had been 18. In her first official field mission, Gomez traveled to Ghana on September 4, 2009 for a week to witness first-hand the stark conditions of vulnerable children that lack vital necessities including clean water, nourishment, education and healthcare.[38][39] Gomez explained during a interview with Associated Press that she wanted to use her star power to bring awareness to Ghana: "That's why I feel very honored to have a voice that kids listen to and take into consideration [...] I had people on my tour asking me where IS Ghana, and they Googled it [âŚ] and because I went there, they now know where Ghana is. So it's pretty incredible."[39][40] Gomez said of her role as ambassador that: "Every day 25,000 children die from preventable causes. I stand with UNICEF in the belief that we can change that number from 25,000 to zero. I know we can achieve this because every moment, UNICEF is on the ground providing children with the lifesaving assistance needed to ensure zero becomes a reality."[38]
Gomez was named spokesperson for UNICEF's 2009 Trick-or-Treat campaign, for the second year in a row.[41] Gomez, who raised over $700,000 for the charity in 2008, stated that she hopes to be able to raise 1 million dollars in 2009.[39] Gomez participated in a celebrity auction[42] and hosted a live web cast series on Facebook in support of the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign.[43] Gomez will return as the UNICEF spokesperson for the 60th anniversary of Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign in 2010.[44]

As of September, 2009, Gomez currently is the new face of Sears back-to-school fashion ad campaign.[45] As part of the endorsement deal Gomez is featured in their television commercials and recorded "I'm Gonna Arrive (Don't Just Go Back)". In August, 2009, Gomez also hosted the "Sears Arrive Air Band Casting Call" â to select five people for the first-ever "Sears Air Band", which performed at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards on September 13, 2009.[46]
In October 2008, Gomez launched her own production company, July Moon Productions, and partnered with XYZ Films to create star vehicles for Gomez. As part of the agreement Gomez will have the opportunity to be able option articles, hire writers and create talent packages to shop to studios.[47][48] Also, as part of the deal, "XYZ Films will allow Gomez to star in and produce at least two films.[35] Variety reported that: "In August, XYZ [Films] inked a similar deal with Time Inc. and management-production company the Collective to finance the development of the print media giant's content for the bigscreen [...] As part of the July Moon-XYZ deal, [Selena] Gomez will have the ability to cherry-pick projects from the vast Time Inc. library, which includes Time, Sports Illustrated, Fortune and Life."[48]
In October, 2009, Gomez announced her plan to launch her own fashion line, called "Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez", which is set to launch in fall 2010.[49][50] The clothing line will consist of and feature bohemian dresses, floral tops, jeans, skirts, jackets, scarves and hats, all made from recycled or eco-friendly materials.[51][52] Gomez said that the line will reflect her own personal style[53] and described the clothing as being "pretty, feminine, and bohemian," and: "With my line, I really want to give the customer options on how they can put their own looks together [...] I want the pieces that can be easy to dress up or down, and the fabrics being eco-friendly and organic is super important [...] Also, the tags will all have some of my inspirational quotes on them. Gomez began wearing a purity ring when she was 12 years old.[55] She is the owner of five rescue dogs and describes herself as a "huge animal lover".[56] After Gomez and Lovato, whom she first met at the Barney & Friends auditions, posted a video blog on YouTube in March 2008, Miley Cyrus and her friend Mandy Jiroux uploaded a parody of that video, which caught the interest of entertainment media. In early 2009, it was announced that Lovato would be embarking on the Summer Tour 2009 in order to promote her sophomore album, which she stated would be released in the summer of 2009.[15] The tour began on June 21, 2009 in Hartford, Connecticut and concluded on August 24, 2009 in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Lovato released her second studio album, Here We Go Again on July 21, 2009. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 108,000 records sold in its first week.[16] Prior to the album's release Lovato stated: "It's going to take a different sound, so hopefully it goes over well. I sing a lot of rock, but this time I want to do more John Mayer-ish type of songs. Hopefully I can write with people like him."[17] The album was more inspired by acoustic music than her debut's pop rock-influenced sound.

2010âpresent: Third studio album
On March 30, 2010 Lovato's South American Tour was announced through her official Myspace page.[22] This will be her first international headlining tour. The tour kicked off May 23, 2010 in Santiago, Chile and concluded on May 28, 2010 in So Paulo, Brazil. On April 27, 2010 the Jonas Brothers announced their World Tour 2010 featuring Lovato as a special guest.[23] The tour will be visiting multiple countries and continents including the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, and Europe. The North American leg of the tour began on August 7, 2010 in Tinley Park, IL and ends on November 9, 2010 in Porto Alegre, Brazil.[24]
Lovato also appears on two soundtrack albums in 2010. She recorded songs for the Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam soundtrack, which was released on August 10, 2010, and will also appear on the Sonny With a Chance soundtrack in late 2010.
Lovato also stated in July 2010 that work on her third album had begun, stating: "The new album, so far it's a little more pop, it's more R&B. It's a little more soulful. It has a different sound to it so I'm really excited to see how it turns out. Keri Hilson and Rihanna are inspiring my sound right now. I have also written a half Spanish song. It turned out really incredible so hopefully my fans will love it too."[25] The album is currently due for a late 2010 or an early 2011 release.
Acting career
Lovato began her acting career at the age of seven on the children's television series Barney & Friends as Angela, appearing in seasons seven and eight alongside long time friend Selena Gomez.[26]
In 2006 Lovato guest starred on Prison Break as Danielle Curtin in the episode "First Down". She also appeared in the second season of the television sitcom Just Jordan as Nicole, in the episode "Slippery When Wet". In January 2007, she landed the role of Charlotte Adams on the Disney Channel Original Short Series, As the Bell Rings, which premiered on August 26, 2007. A few of her original songs, including "Shadow," were featured on the show. Upon leaving the show, her character was replaced by Lindsey Black. Lovato sang a cover of "That's How You Know" from the film Enchanted. The song was released on DisneyMania 6 on May 20, 2008.[13]

In 2008, Lovato starred in the Disney Channel film, Camp Rock. She played Mitchie Torres, a fourteen-year-old girl with hopes of becoming a singer. The movie premiered on June 20, 2008 in the USA on Disney Channel with 8.9 million viewers, making Lovato a house-hold name among tweens.[27] She provided vocals on four of the songs featured on the Camp Rock soundtrack, including "This Is Me" featuring Joe Jonas.[28]
In June 2009 Lovato co-starred in Princess Protection Program as Princess Rosalinda alongside Selena Gomez on Disney Channel.[29] The TV movie is about a young Princess who is taken into custody by the Princess Protection Program and is whisked away to rural Louisiana where she must learn the ins and outs of behaving like a normal American teenager. The movie is the fourth highest rated Disney Channel Original Movie, and premiered on Disney Channel with 8.5 million viewers.
Next, Lovato went on to star in the Disney Channel Original Series, Sonny With a Chance, which premiered on February 8, 2009.[30] The series' second season premiered on March 14, 2010.[31] The show stars Lovato as Sonny who becomes the new cast member of a live comedy show, So Random!.
In September 2009, production began for Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam. The Disney Channel Original Movie premiered on September 3, 2010. The movie also gained 8 million viewers on its premiere.[32][33]
In March 2010, Lovato was one of the many stars featured in a PSA for Voto Latino in order to promote the organization's "Be Counted" campaign for the 2010 U.S. Census.[34] Lovato guest appeared in an episode of the medical drama series Grey's Anatomy as a teenage patient.[35] The episode titled "Shiny Happy People" aired May 13, 2010 on the ABC television network.[36][37] In a review of the episode, EW.com praised her performance stating, "I still believe that even an unbiased observer would conclude that the Disney princess did a fine job acting it up as a suicidal 16-year-old who was admitted after trying to claw her own eyes out".[38]

Demi Lovato has partnered with mall proprietor GGP as the face of Shop Til You Rock, a music-inspired series of public events, which kick off at malls around the US in Summer 2010. The combines the season's hottest fashions & today's most popular musical guests in a series of interactive events.[50] Lovato is also the spokesperson for anti-bullying organization PACER. Lovato explained to NY Post about becoming a spokesperson agains bullying "Bullying is a very serious thing to me, I've witnessed it first hand â I was bullied myself when I was 12, I want to be able to help other girls around [my sister's] age come into their own with a strong confidence in their skin, their size, who they are and everything about themselves."
