Point 1: Fascination with Oscars
Frankly, I don't understand this. 30-40 Academy awards are given to American films made in the USA. Out of the rest of the 190 countries in the world only 5 are chosen as nominees and only one gets the best foreign film award. Are you telling me there are only 5 good films made by the rest of the world?
I don't really blame the US AMPAS for this. It is their award and they rightly give it to the best in their country. Do the Bollywood award shows ever give awards to foreign films? Also, why can't the Indian film fraternity be satisfied with the numerous awards handed out in India every year.
Point 2: Making good films.
At the same time blaming our inherent song and dance routine for depriving us of Oscar is not correct. We are rarely making good films nowadays. Where are the great directors of yore: Guru Dutt, Bimal Roy, Satyajit Ray, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Vijay Anand etc…
Guru Dutt made some wonderful movies with great songs: Sahib, Biwi Aur Ghulam & Kaagaz Ke Phool. Satyajit Ray received Oscar lifetime achievement award (not that I think it is necessary to affirm his genius). His nomination was backed by 70 filmmakers worldwide. True talent thrives – with or without song & dance.
