Umm, it is downright disgusting. It is unconstitutional and racist. Half the people who approve such laws are doing it only because of frustrations and not even knowing what the law is about. Arizona is not receiving flak for what it is doing to illegals ' it is receiving flak for being racist, bigoted and doing what is unconstitutional against legal citizens too. Now I don't disagree that illegal immigration is an issue. I don't even deny that illegal immigration issue must be addressed legally and illegal immigrants found and deported. However, that does not mean that you violate the constitutional rights of legal citizens or the human rights of legal visitors and residents. SB 1070 says that because I look Mexican ' Habeus corpus can be chucked out the window and authorities can arrest and detain me, without my legal rights and counsel until they determine I am not illegal. Let's not forget illegal immigrants are not just Mexicans or Latinos ' Indians, Asians, Europeans all races enter the states illegally. In fact there are plenty of white illegal immigrants who fly under the radar because they don't look "immigrant". There are several Canadians who overstay work permits or live on expired visas (The Proposal anyone). Speaking of crimes ' the fact is that most illegal immigrants try to live off the grid to avoid tussle with the cops. Yes there are illegal immigrant gangs and criminals ' but most illegal immigrants are actually honest laborers (sans illegal status). Most crimes are actually committed by "LEGAL" long term residents. And there is no difference in the crime rate between white trash trailer parks, black ghettos, Chinatowns, Little Mexicos and Little Italys. But crimes, immigration, NOTHING is a legitimate excuse for the unconstitutional act of legal racism. Thankfully the Federal Judge struck down what was unconstitutional and we can be assured the Supreme court will hold up the constitution too.

Alright, sorry for the rant. Back to music and romance then.

Actually that ur perspective from Midwest but not of somebody living on the Mexican border....we are experiencing this problem first hand..........most of the time there is no way to catch the illegal immigrants after they have committed a crime because there is no finger prints and no legal documents....they don't pay taxes and they are a burden...on the system..........

America is being pounded by illegal immigrants, terrorists but anytime anyone tries to take a stand they are termed as being racist and against a particular religion......agreed that their will be some collateral damage but for that reason we cannot just turn a blind eye to such a big problem..............If it was so easy it would been done years back but none of the presidents dare to bring this issue up for the fear of loosing their vote bank...........

Although I am not a conservative but on this issue i applaud the governor of Arizona that she dared to do this....If we had been thinking of people's rights all the time there would have been may more terrorist attacks after 9/11....but their were none because somebody decided to catch the bull by its horns....

We can all keep talking about our rights and penalizing innocent citizens and violation of human rights but talk doesn't solve problems..action does...

I'm not speaking as just a Midwestern person. I'm speaking as an American citizen, an American citizen who is aware of the Constitution and the precarious situation we set up for the future when we completely disregard the concepts of equality and fair treatment granted by the constitution. Also it is a misconception that only southern states face immigration issues. Southern states face the challenge of stopping entry, but illegal immigration is widespread. A large number of immigrants legal & illegal are seasonal farm employees or workers at dairy/meat processing plants that need cheap labor.

The Arizona law is nothing but racist because it encourages law officers to racially profile anyone foreign looking. It violates the writ of Habeas Corpus one of the quintessential civil rights of thousands of people. It disregards constitutional provisions of Habeas Corpus and equity. If such blatant encouragement of racial profiling and legalizing it is not racism and bigotry then I have no idea what is anymore.

There are other ways to manage illegal immigration.

1) Enhance border security

2) Regularly audit and check random businesses to ensure legality of all employees

3) Regularly audit and check random apartment complexes and housing associations to ensure legality of all residents

4) Place check points at major state crossings, entryways to major influx areas where everyone irrespective of race and ethnicity has to submit papers.

There is no excuse of racial discrimination, absolutely no excuse. Immigrants come from all races and ethnicities, so immigration laws ought to also apply equally to all races and ethnicities – not on the arbitrary guessing of ill informed people on who they think is an immigrant or not.

Moreover if the concern is that illegal immigrants are not taxpaying citizens or documented – then let's go through with NAFTA. Why not open full free trade between USA-Canada-Mexico in all aspects – land, labor, capitol and entrepreneurship. Most Mexican immigrants have family and obligations back home and do not go back due to reentry risks. Most would prefer to seasonally work and return. Full free trade also lets displaced American employees seek employment in factories/businesses relocated into Mexico without the risks of losing their citizenship privileges.

there is nothing mentioned which says foreign looking.......it is just an assumption that foreign looking people will be caught more which is true to a certain extent...

It clearly encourages racial profiling

https://www.aclu.org/immigrants-rights-racial-justice/q-arizonas-sb1070-racial-profiling-bill

Edit: It does not explicitly state "foreign looking" but it encourages detaining of anyone who could possibly be an illegal immigrant - which most officials will use to harass and profile Latin looking people - just how they profiled and harassed anyone who looks Islamic as terrorist.

interesting how many times the charge of racism gets thrown out just because someone does not agree with a position

I dont have a problem the cops stopping anyone they feel is suspicious, If they cant verify who the person is, they might as well as hold the person till they prove it. If that makes it mandatory for everyone to carry an ID, so be it
